Since we keep getting "live action" CGI remakes of already perfectly adequate animated movies, and because people need to understand that animation is a medium and not a genre, I have prepared this primer about the importance of Visual Language for Conveying Information.

Can you tell what the personalities of these two mice are?

Can you tell now?

Which of these two tigers feels safer to be around?

Which of these three dogs is the funniest one?

If you can answer these questions, then you already have experience with the idea of visual language and stylistic choices being used to impart narrative meaning. If you can understand why these choices were made to impart meaning, then you can understand why animation is a medium for telling stories that has its own inherent value, and is not merely a "placeholder" for the eventual implementation of photorealistic presentation (aka "Live Action" CGI). Animation does not need to be "corrected" or "legitimized" by remaking it into the most representational simulation of observable reality.

Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

(I'm not a Christian but I got kicked out from Sunday School as a kid for this parable, for saying that it was weird that a loving and forgiving Jesus would curse something made by God to not fruit out of season since this was a evangelical literal branch of Christianity that held the Bible as inerrant. In the Bible fertile plants/trees are signs of righteous people and ones that bear no fruit or are dying are unrighteous.)

Apparently figs produce their first harvest of the year at the same time as the leaves, so the fact that the tree was covered in leaves should have meant that it had plenty of fruit, even though it was early in the year. It looks like a bit of good luck, so he gets his hopes up (I think it specifically mentions that he's hungry here lol) but then he gets closer and is disappointed because the fruit isn't there after all - so the tree appears to be producing fruit even out of season, but turns out to have nothing despite its promise. I guess it's meant as a symbol, where putting on a veneer of outward success means nothing if you haven't actually taken the time to become a good person, and spending all your effort on looking virtuous means you don't have anything left to follow up on it if someone asks you for help.

This definitely applies to the printer.
