Scherzo (2003) // The Star Beast (2023)

You know how the sound creature in Scherzo wants the Doctor and Charley to sacrifice themselves for it because that's the only concept of love it's ever had? And the reason for that is because it's only ever heard Charley and the Doctor talk about love - it was literally born from their resentment, their love, every single sound they made? And from their words it learned emotion and desire, and the Doctor's first sacrifice of sound put reason to that emotion far, far too quickly; it learned from "Of course I loved you, I killed myself for you!" but it didn't understand what that meant. (I mean, did the Doctor?) Charley and the Doctor idolize the idea of one another, and Scherzo is the point where that falls apart, where they have to face the aftermath of the grand gestures they made in Neverland and Zagreus and they realize that their broken reality and broken selves aren't quite what they thought. The sound creature's concept of love is based entirely around self-sacrifice for some grander idea because that's how Charley wants it to be, that's the only way the Doctor understands it. And it learned from them far too well, even as its accelerated maturity meant it didn't understand anything.

"I could fix him" "I could make him worse" I could make him care about me so much that he's risk the universe to save me, that he'd kill himself to save md. i could make him leave me behind and i could love him enough to stay with him. he could become worse of his own volition in a way that only hurts me. we could walk in circles for daysweeksyears, long enough that our joined hands fuse together and we become as one. we could become one another completely and utterly and we could say i will not see the other dead, i would die before they did, and so we stay alive together. we could become our own people again, but there is a part of him in me and a part of me in him. we could walk away, and we could hold hands and he could say it's no longer necessary and i could say i know. and we would still hold hands.

Hey you know when one of the last times the Doctor said I love you that I can think of is?

Zagreus. He told Charley he loved her. And then she followed him and they spent weeks in sensory deprivation unpacking that and love itself as a concept. And we never heard him say it again.

Doctor Who is a great fandom to be in on tumblr because you'll see spoilers everywhere but not a single one of them is coherent unless you've seen the episode anyway. like oh the glorbon is secretly trying to ensnare humanity in a giant crab trap? the new companion Jiminy Pubble turned out to be the latest regeneration of the Doctor's old enemy The Fuckwizard? thanks I know less than I did before

Okay yeah treating Classic Who like an anthology and just jumping around based off the vibes I'm feeling already feels a lot more manageable for my attention span than what I was trying to do with watching it all in order. Think I'm gonna stick with this method for now

Finally had a chance to watch some classic who episodes again and GOD the Master really is just horny for the Doctor in every era

The Doctor being able to to hear non-diegetic music explains why Eleven always fixed his bowtie so dramatically. Motherfucker could always hear 'I am the Doctor' blasting and acted accordingly.
