A Proper Thanksgiving Meal đ
Dean reads a book and decides that despite their mostly crummy lives, it's actually worth it being thankful/grateful. Sam disagrees. And when Dean makes a fuss about deserving a nice meal and not just settling/taking whatever they can get, Cas takes a note/page out of his book and gets him to see/say otherwise.

âHappy thanksgiving, Sammy!â Dean said, coming into the kitchen, mouth full and a half eaten sandwich in his hand.
Sam, who was busy cutting up some chicken to make himself some lunch, set down the knife and sighed. âDean, for the last time, itâs Sam.â
âSo, Sam-I-am, whenâs dinner?â
His younger brother snorted. âAt dinner time,â he retorted. âBesides, Iâm not making anything. Itâs a holiday, so Iâm taking the night off.â
âNope, canât do that, Sam-o.â
Dean shoved the rest of his sandwich in his mouth and after washing it down with a can of rootbeer from the fridge, he said, âAny other night of the year I would have agreed with you, but not tonight. And, Iâll tell you what,â he put a hand on Samâs shoulder. âIâll even help you.â He grinned.
Sam shrugged him off. âDean, weâre not doing thanksgiving,â he said. âItâs a waste of time, money, food, and besides - what do we have to be thankful for?â
Dean, who was drinking his rootbeer, nearly choked. âExcuse me?â
âI said, what do we have to be thankful for?â
âPlenty.â
âOh yeah? Like what? And since when did you care about thanksgiving anyway?â
âSam, Iâm gonna give you a choice. We can do this here, or we can talk about it in your room.â
The taller one frowned. âWhat are you talking about? Why would we need toâOOF!â
Taking advantage of his confused and distracted state, Dean tackled his little brother and wrestled around with him on the ground until he got the upper hand and pinned one of Samâs legs between his knees.
âWhat do we have to be thankful for?â Dean asked, catching his breath. âPlenty. We have each other, we have this wicked bunker, all the research materials you could ever dream of, an angel thatâs at our beck and call -â
âNo heâs not.â
âYou know what I mean! Then thereâs the fact that weâre alive - like, do you have any idea how many times weâve died at this point? Or been on the brink of death? I canât even count anymore.â
Sam huffed. âYeah, we might be alive, but I didnât ask to be. I didnât ask for this life. Why are you so concerned about being grateful anyway?â
âBecause Sam,â Dean said. âHating your life and being ungrateful and taking all this shit for granted - itâll ruin you. I found this book -â
âOhhhhh, so thatâs where this came from.â
âI found this book that explained why being grateful is so important, and after looking back at all the shit weâve gone through and how itâs affected us, I realized, heck, the guyâs right. Life sucks, but we gotta do what we can to see the bright side of life. Besides, you should be proud of me! Readinâ a book and learnin from it and being grateful and all that.â Dean said, He poked Samâs side a few times. âEh? Eh? Arenât you proud of me?â
Sam rolled his eyes fondly, finally cracking a smile. âYeah, I guess so.â
âHa! There we go!â Dean cheered.
âAlright, alright, I see your point. But whyâd ya have to pin me to the floor to make it?â
âTo do this!â Dean said, digging his fingers into his little brotherâs belly. âI thought I was gonna have to convince you, but since I already did, well, I thought Iâd do it anyway! This is too good of an opportunity to pass up!â
âAhahahahahahahahahahaaaa! Dehehehehehehean!â Sam laughed, pushing at his hands and squirming on the floor. He squealed as his older brother slipped his hands under his shirt and raked his fingers up and down his ribs. âNo fahahahahahair!â
âFair? Whatâs not fair?â
âNo fahahahaahahahaahair tickling mehehehehehe!â
Dean grinned and snuck his fingers into his little brother's armpits. âNahhhh, Iâm your big brother. Tickling you is completely fair!â
Sam kicked his feet, his armpits being one of his worst spots. âAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!â
âAw, whatâs the matter Sammy? Ticklish?â
âSTAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAP!â
âYou really want me to stop? I seem to remember little Sammy jumping into my lap and saying, De, please tickle me!â
Samâs face went a shade redder than it already was.
âAnd you used to love it when Iâd do this!â
Dean pushed up his shirt, leaned down, and gave him a huge raspberry. âPTTTTHHHHHBBBBB!â
Sam screamed with laughter, the tickly vibrations lighting up his nerves with joy. âAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHA! AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!â
Dean let up, unable to keep from laughing himself.
Sam gasped for breath, the worldâs biggest smile on his face. âYouâre the wohohohohorst!â he giggled.
âOhoho, youâd better watch your mouth,â Dean teased. âThemâs fightinâ words, Sammy!â He wiggled his fingers at him.
Samâs eyes widened and he renewed his efforts to escape. Panting and gasping and half laughing he managed to turn over onto his stomach and start to crawl away. Dean snickered and let him get away a few inches before he grabbed Samâs ankle.
âDEAN! NO! NOT THERE!â
Shoe and sock flew off, and a battalion of tickling fingers landed on his bare foot. Sam howled with laughter and pounded his fist on the floor.
âDEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! PLEHEHEHEHEHEASE!â
âYouâre really still this ticklish, arenât you?â
âOBVIOUSLY! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!â
âAnd youâre still not complaining about being tickled half to death, huh?â Dean asked, not expecting an answer as he took Samâs shoe and sock off his other foot. Deciding to have a little mercy, he switched to gentler tickles to give his little brother some time to breathe.
âDehehehehehehehehehe! Dehehehehehehehehehe!â
âHmmmm?â
âEheheehehehehehehehehe!â
âHavin fun there, Sammy?â
âYeheheheheheheheheah! Hahahahahahahaha!â
Dean clutched his chest with one hand. âStillâŚsoâŚcute,â he said overdramatically, thankful that Sam couldnât hear him over his giggles.
âYou all done?â Dean asked, using the phrase theyâd use when they were little.
âAhahahahahall dohohohohone!â Sam giggled, turning and laying on his back, gasping for breath.
Dean smiled and laid on his back next to him. âSo, what do ya think for tonight?â
Sam, still coming off his ticklish giggle high, managed to say, âAs long as itâs not the turducken, Iâm fine with whatever.â
Dean yawned. âSounds good,â he said, then slowly got up and gave Sam a hand.
âWhy are you yawning? Iâm the one whoâs tired,â Sam joked. But when Dean pulled him up, Sam pulled him into a tight hug and whispered. âThank you, De.â
The older one stood there in shock, hugging him back tightly. âNo prob, little bro,â he whispered back, denying the fact that his voice sounded a little husky. They quickly pushed away from each other and cleared their throats.
âWell, enough of that chick flick bullshit,â Dean said. âLetâs go find us a thanksgiving turkey burger.â
Later on, the two brothers sat down at the table, a greasy spoon thanksgiving meal before them.
Theyâd just started digging in, when Deanâs eyes lit up. âHey, Cas,â he said, mouth half full of turkey burger. âGet down here.â
Cas popped up right in front of him, making him jump. âYou called?â
Dean huffed through his nose. âWill you stop doing that?â
Sam snorted.
âWhat are you two doing?â Cas asked. âIt is not often you two have such a feast.â
âItâs thanksgiving, Cas.â
âYeah, sit down and join us man,â Sam said.
The angel tilted his head and thought for a moment. âBut this isnât a proper thanksgiving meal.â
Sam gave him a look. âHey, itâs the best we could do on a budget. Youâve got cornbread, mashed potatoes, vegetables, turkey burgers and pie. What more could you want?â
Cas lifted the tray of onion rings. âOnion rings? Not really what youâd call classic.â
Dean shrugged, smiling innocently. âCouldnât resist,â he said.
Sam took another bite. âI was the one who vouched for the usual thanksgiving meal but Mr. Budget over here said no.â
âI can get us a turkey and stuffing, anything you like, no problem.â
Sam frowned. âBut why?â
âBecause you deserve something nice,â Cas said. âYou rarely âtreat yourselfâ as you say. And Iâd like to contribute. After everything the two of you have been through, I think itâs only proper that you are treated to a nice thanksgiving meal.â
âDeserve? Whoâs to say we deserve anything?â Dean grumbled.
Samâs grateful smile faded.
âAfter all weâve done, does anything get better? Permanently? No! It never lasts!â
âDeanââ
âNo Sam! You know Iâm right! We donât deserve anything! Except maybe to live, and breathe, and take care of ourselves!â
âWhoa! What the hell, Dean? Five minutes ago you were just giving me the lecture of a lifetime about how we should be grateful, but the minute someone wants to be grateful towards usââ
âThatâs not what this is about and you know it! If someone wants to thank us, then thatâs on their terms! I said we should be thankful for what we have! I never said anything about us deserving it!â
Sam immediately calmed, though not completely. âOhhhhh, so thatâs what this is about. Youâre letting your pride get in the way again because you think you donât deserve nice things, you settle. You take whatever you can get.â
âKinda comes with the lifestyle,â Dean muttered bitterly. âAnd donât act like you donât get the same way, mister high and mighty.â
âAlright, alright, fair,â Sam admitted, raising his hands in surrender. âSometimes I do. But you gotta give Cas some credit here, man. Heâs trying to do something nice for us, now let him.â
âHow about you let him speak for himself?â
Cas raised his eyebrows. âYes, I would appreciate it if I could.â
The two men turned to him, giving him their full attention.
âI would like to do something nice for you both, because you are my friends and I appreciate you and care for you both. And I think you do, in fact, deserve it,â the angel said. âNow, Dean,â he walked towards him. âI am tired of this prideful attitude of yours. And I intend to do something about it.â
âHey, whoawhoawhoa - Cas, thatâs not fair,â Dean stammered, getting up from his chair and backing away as the angel advanced towards him. âLet me get some angel stuff and we can have a good clean fight.â
Cas stopped in his tracks. âFight? What makes you think Iâm going to hurt you? At most I would wrestle you in play as most men do, but in this case I think something more childish at play will suffice.â
Deanâs squinted. âWhat are you talking about?â
âDonât you think I saw you tickling Sam earlier? I sensed something was off and came to check on you both, but once I realized you were playing and that he wasnât in any danger, I left you to it. However, it seemed to be very effective. And you made your point.â
Sam blushed a little, embarrassed that the angel had seen that, but ultimately he snickered, knowing that his brother was about to suffer the same thing.
Dean continued backing up. âHeh, well, lucky for you Iâm not even ticklish anymore,â he said, then tripped and fell backwards onto the floor.
Cas grinned and used a little of his grace to pin him so he was splayed out like a starfish. âThatâs not what I heard you say in your thoughts,â he said, then sat on his knees next to him and started tickling his lower ribs. Dean guffawed, hating that the angel could read his thoughts and thus go for his worst spot immediately. His feet and hands moved back and forth and never had the hunter hated the angelâs grace like he did in that moment - he desperately wished he could move, wiggle, do something!
âGAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! CAHAHAHAHAHAS! DAHAHAHAHAMN YOU! AHAHAHAHAHA!â
âDamning me, hmm? You should really be careful what you say, Dean. Especially when I have you in this position.â
Cas started to knead his hips, making him let out pure belly laughs instead of hysterics. âNow, what was it you kept saying to Sam? Something about just how ticklish he was? And how much it tickled?â
Dean snorted and blushed at the teasing. âHahahahahahaha! Shut uhuhuhuhuhup already!â
Sam giggled and started taking pictures and a video, planning on using it later. If Dean ever got stubborn over text, he could always send him a few of those pictures and threaten him with tickles. âI canât believe I forgot about this,â he said to himself, grinning from ear to ear.
âWhy should I?â the angel asked. âIt seems to make it tickle worse, from what I can tell from your thoughts. Tickle, tickle, tiiiiickle~â Cas teased, giving his hips a break and now tickling his tummy and sides. âAm I doing it right?â he asked Sam, momentarily glancing at him before continuing to dance his fingers across his brotherâs freckled and extremely ticklish tummy. âIâve seen parents tease their children like that, so it seems appropriate.â
âCahahahahaaaas! I swear once you let me up - ahahahahahaha! Iâm gonna kihihihihill you! No! No! Not the behehehehehehehellybutton! Ahahahahahaha!â
Sam laughed. âYouâre doing great, Cas! Keep it up! Hahaha!â
Dean shrieked, laughing his head off and mentally begging for some reprieve, yet at the same time he was begging for it to continue. He couldnât remember the last time heâd laughed this much or this hard, and he couldnât remember the last time heâd felt this carefree or had this much fun.
Of course, Cas could hear this too, but he decided to give his human a break and let him keep some dignity.
âI believe thereâs also terms to tickle you with, such as, gitchy gitchy goo and coochie coochie coo!â
The fingers kept up their persistent tickling dance on his torso. âSTAHAHAHAHAHAAAAP!â Dean screeched, his face two shades darker of red.
âHmm, you have some energy left. Iâll tickle you a little more I think. Sam, whatâs another one of his worst spots?â
âSahahahahahammy! Dohohohonât you dahahahare tell him!â
Sam grinned wickedly. âHis feet!â
And with a snap of his fingers, Deanâs shoes and socks were off and laying neatly next to him. And a rainbow feather duster appeared next to the hunterâs right foot.
âFrom my quick scan of the media, feathers are a popular tool for tickling. Wouldnât you say Dean?â
The poor, ticklish hunter couldnât answer. He focused on breathing as he watched the angel move his feet and legs together, still pinned by his grace.
âNow, Dean,â Cas began, picking up the feather duster. âNow that I have sufficiently tired you out, I believe I can get through to you. You deserve to have nice things, things of quality, things of enjoyment. You need not settle for the lesser things, though I understand why you do because of limited resources. However, when the opportunity comes along I donât want you to deny yourself enjoyment. You deserve good things in this life, Dean Winchester. Not only because of who you are, but what you do. So, do you agree to sit down with Sam and I for a nice, proper thanksgiving meal?â
Dean rolled his eyes.
âSo be it,â Cas said, then picked up the duster and promptly started tickling his feet.
âPFFFFFT! CAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAS! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! PLEHEHEHEHEHEASE! NOHOHOHOHOHOHO!â
Sam chuckled. âOh my gosh, I canât believe heâs begging. It really is that bad of a spot,â he said, then leaned back in a chair and began to scroll the news on his phone, leaving the two goofballs to play. âI wonder if angels are ticklish,â Sam thought out loud.
The feathers fluttered over Deanâs arches and under his toes, sawing between them, dancing over his heels and over the tops of his feet and toes.
âOH GAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAD! ITâS SO BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAD!â Dean howled, wiggling his toes like there was no tomorrow.
âTickle, tickle, tickle, Dean. You deserve nice things!â âNOHOHOHOHOHOHO I DOHOHOHOHONâT!â
âYes you do! And Iâm not going to stop tickling you until you agree with me that you do! What if I tickle your arches and toes at the same time, hmm? Will that convince you?â
âNAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! OH PLEHEHEHEHEHEHEASE!â Dean begged, losing all decorum as tears filled his eyes.
Cas smiled, knowing his human was about to break. âWill you sit down and have a proper thanksgiving dinner with me and your brother?â he asked.
âYEHEHEHEHEHEHES! YEHEHEHEHEHEHES! I WILL! JUST STAHAHAHAHAHAHAP!â Dean laughed, tears streaming down his face now.
The angel stopped immediately and removed his grace, also snapping his fingers and putting his shoes and socks back on him. Dean immediately curled up into a tight ball, still giggling and trying to get his breath back.
Cas gave him a few minutes to re-orient himself and get his breath back, before he scooted over to him and began to rub his back.
Dean jumped at first at the surprise contact, then eventually settled down and melted into the touch.
âYou alright there, Dean?â
âYeahâŚ,â Dean mumbled. âYouâre a ruthless, cruel, and terrible person.â
âIâm an angel, not a person,â Cas corrected, greeting him with a smile as he sat up. âAnd Iâm glad you enjoyed it.â
Dean scowled. âI did not enjoy it,â he argued.
âYour thoughts say otherwise.â
âGet out of my head, damn it!â
The angel chuckled. âWould you like a hug?â he asked quietly, whispering so that Sam couldnât hear. âI know affection after intense playing like this can be a great comfort.â
Dean huffed, but responded mentally.
Cas pulled him into a deep, wonderfully soothing hug. It was tight, but not restricting. It was firm, but full of love. Dean practically melted and nearly gave a contented little sigh as he felt the angel massage his scalp too.
Cas felt his heart break a little. His poor boys never knew much love. They had each other, but not much else. And heâd be damned if he ever let these two humans, whom he cared for very much, go around without knowing they were cared for and loved.
âDean, wake up,â Cas said quietly. âItâs time to get things ready for dinner.â He helped the hunter up, and the two went into the kitchen to clear up the fast food thanksgiving, and replace it with a proper one.
âMmm! Cas, whereâd you learn how to cook?â Sam asked,
âCooking is easy,â Cas said with a shrug. âIâve read hundreds of books. Watched people do it,â he said, eating his sweet potato casserole with gusto.
âMmmmm. Oh my goâMAN thatâs good!â Dean groaned, falling in love with all this pie. Cherry, apple, pumpkin, blueberry, you name it! âI donât know why I ever argued with you. I guess we do deserve nice things.â
Sam beamed, and Cas grinned.
âItâs about time you came around,â Sam said.
Dean rolled his eyes fondly.
Cas passed him the plate of turkey. âYou better eat some protein, young man,â he said. âOtherwise youâll end up in a sugar coma.â
Dean snorted but took the plate and served himself some turkey anyway. âYes, Mom,â he teased.
The three shared a laugh at that, then continued to eat and enjoy a proper thanksgiving meal.
The end!
