someone in the reblogs said “letting mittens outside to kill a few birds is fine because britain’s ecosystems are already decimated to the point where they barely exist anymore”. I’m genuinely so perplexed. you think it’s fine? to let cats kill vulnerable native birds? because they’re already endangered so it doesn’t matter if your cat kills a few more? do you also dump your rubbish in the sea because “the oceans are already polluted, what’s a bit more”? jesus christ people. do you think mittens is the only outdoor cat in the country??? tens to hundreds of thousands of other people do this as well. it’s not a few birds. it’s hundreds of thousands of birds. you are not the only person on earth
while this is true, in a lot of rural areas barn cats are a necessity due to their help with pest control, so there are times when outdoor cats are needed.
Barn cats do not target specific species. What they do is kill off all the “fun” prey first, which is your dragonflies, songbirds, rabbits, etc. Now you have a rampant fly and mosquito problem and nobody is trimming up your grass every day. Then they start driving off the larger natural predators, so now you have MORE rodents with plenty of places to hide since the snakes and birds of prey don’t come around anymore.
People who are actually having a pest problem either hire terriers or train their own, because they really do need the rat/mouse population to go down desperately and don’t have time for a cat to decide once every few months that a single mouse might be tasty.
