Monotheatre 1 | The Tale of the Internet Forum Moderator
tw: child neglect, substance abuse
Drawing from the same deck, the improper card reading continues. This time, however, the speaker is not Monomi but rather her companion Monokuma.
There was once a child filled with loneliness.
The Strength’s childhood was one of absence and arguments.
His mother, an alcoholic who cared little for her family, wasting their money away as she stalked the streets at night.
And his father, fully aware of her actions, as he made sure she knew everything she was doing wrong, not caring if their son was listening.
Left in front of the TV, or wandering outside alone, The Strength only had himself to reply on.
He was five years old when his father gifted him a used computer of his own, a way to distract him so he didn’t have to think about the boy.
It soon became his whole life.
There was nothing more interesting than the internet, not to The Strength, who ignored other kids and responsibilities just so he could get home and play on his computer.
Stumbling upon a forum about rocks, he found himself posting, despite his lack of knowledge on the subject.
Being able to contribute and be heard…
It made him feel good.
Even after he received hurtful and horrifying messages–
He kept coming back.
The computer was his safe haven, the only thing he really had.
How was he supposed to let it go?
And when he gets into a harmless pet game for kids, he decides to create a space for all to enjoy.
His own forum.
A place where people like him could have fun, speak, be themselves.
One where the mocking of young people like him just trying to enjoy themselves wasn’t tolerated.
And it felt like every forum he helped work on became a calm, relaxing haven for people to talk about their interest.
The Strength had a hand in creating so many wonderful communities, admired by members and mods alike.
One in particular wanted to meet him in real life…
…His parents didn’t care. Even as their home life calmed down, they had long given up on their son.
And if this stranger on the internet thought more highly of him than his own parents, than why wouldn’t he want to meet them?
So, he made plans, lying about his age and telling them he would be hiding his face.
This twenty four year old woman from American didn’t expect for him to be a child. In fact, it was probably the last thing she could have ever expected.
She was amazed– no one seemed to care about the kid, considering just how often he was online.
She took it upon herself to be a guardian to The Strength.
For the first time in his life, he had a parental figure– an adult who cared about his well being.
If there was one person out there who actually cared about him as a person, then everything that’s lead up to it was worth while…
Right?
The arcana is the means by which all is revealed…
Your self doubt controls you, the dependence on others hindering your ability to find the strength within to carry on. Believe that your own instincts hold just as much power as those around you.
