BOBGATE SUMMARY

Bobgate is a beloved CG theory. It’s very long and very beautiful, I love it so I will summarize it. Thank you for this theory @cara-ti-amo

At its core, Bobgate is the theory that Creelby (Henry Creel & Bob Newby) is actually the story of the relationship between Bob Newby and Patty Newby.

There are layers to the deception between Stranger Things & The First Shadow:

We have already seen this type of foreshadowing and storytelling in Season 5, where characters appear to act and play as ANOTHER character. Think, Holly representing Mike!

Additionally, we have already seen a queer relationship between two characters (Mike and Will) in which one of the parties is projecting their feelings onto a more appropriate love interest (Mike projecting onto El).

There are also already a lot of theories that Mike and Will have buried memories of each other, comparisons to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and general mind fuckery.

Basically, Bobgate is (to quote Mike) the story that can ‘never be told’ because at least one party involved has forgotten. Because one or more parties were not brave enough, did not understand their feelings, or just simply when LOVE does not defeat FEAR.

Henry has lost all of the actual core of his memories with Bob Newby, replacing their story with him and Patty’s story!

It can be interpreted as what will happen to Mike and Will if they do not get their shit together.

Similarities are:

Like how El becomes adopted by the Byers, Bob’s family adopts Patty. She comes from ‘nowhere’ (literally called the girl from nowhere) like how they compare El to ET, has an arc about finding her mother (like El does).

I understand the frustration people have with it though, seeing Patty and El as just like allegories, but I think when love wins, the idea is that these women are actually able to be free and REAL people after they are no longer used for men to project their heteronormative ideas onto.

Basically, homophobia hurts EVERYONE. It hurts the people who are not able to love the way they best can, and the people they try so hard to love in the process of being someone they are not. It hurts Mike/Will, Bob/Henry, and Patty/El. It denies them ALL the agency over their own stories, and denies women their own agency and autonomy by playing a part for men.

It is not just replacing Patty with Bob, just as it is not replacing El with Will. It is allowing these women to play their own incredibly vital role in the story. Bobgate stated that Patty will have her own role to play, this is just hidden from us for the time being.

Starting 2026 really felt like entering a nightmare. Rather than feeling like outcasts were seen, loved, celebrated and accepted- it was the total flip side of that coin.

It doesn’t make sense that Mike didn’t get a complete or clear character arc. From starting as fiercely loyal and protective best friend and sharp leader to his loved ones, only to be reduced to a insensitive “love interest” to a “born sexy yesterday” character with no explanation to his aggressive shift in personality. Same thing can be said about “Rambo” Nancy, who just became a killing machine with no remorse.

It doesn’t make sense that Max’s biggest fear was to become violent and aggressive like her brother, only for us to see her aggressively her crash out at their last DnD game.

How Joyce and Hopper felt like caricatures of themselves. How Johnathan was ignored and sidelined.

All of these character points are nothing new, it just keeps echoing from the “plane crash”. No they did not land that stupid plane lmao.

I never expected to feel hit so hard by such a disappointing end to a tv show, but I realise it’s because it is personal.

S5 has done nothing but expose just how hateful, prejudiced and intolerant people truly are to outcasts.

Because it broadcasted their message loud and clear. You can be loved and accepted - but far, far away from us where you can’t be seen or heard.

So forgive me for wanting CG to happen, to get a little hope back for the real future for outcasts out there.

I understand the fans’ frustration with Season 5, but I genuinely feel sorry for the animators who worked on Tales from ’85 and whose work is now being subjected to unfair criticism. I’m not thrilled either with the uncertainty or with what this project seems to represent, especially since, in terms of meaning, it appears to contradict our canon (the series). But we’ve barely seen anything yet, and we still don’t know what this animated show actually is. I’m trying to stay neutral and wait until I can watch the whole thing.

But yes, I’m not going to subscribe to Netflix just to support this project financially — nothing is clear yet, and I haven’t forgotten the damage Season 5 did to its most devoted viewers, the ones who poured their hearts into this project and supported it for many years.
