Despite every moment of life being indescribably precious and a wondrous mystery, I will spend it caring about dividends and how many rental properties I have.
Rich people are truly dead inside.Â
I can't imagine caring this much about numbers that absolutely will never impact my life. This person is making more in passive income than I've ever made in my life and he's just like "but but I need more :(".
I mean, fuck that guy, but psychologically it's interesting.
Some desperate remnant of his soul knows what he needs. As soon as his debt is cleared, he goes on to live what many would call an utterly charmed life: working no more than 20 hours a week, travelling and spending time with friends (which he, at $150,000 a year and no mortgage, has ample money to do). He has a loving relationship also.
But his brain is so rotten that he cannot understand happiness anymore. He is incapable of conceptualising it other than in money.
A man who has everything except the ability to feel it.
How poetic.
But fuck that guy.
I want to hit this man.
I want to rob this man.
Meow appears beside Rogue, holding a sign: "Heist? Heist."
This man is so so so close to realizing a fundamental truth to how humans operate, but I genuinely donât think heâs going to get there. Although Iâm not sure he realizes it this man views the money he earns as a direct translation of his sense of personal achievement and engagement.Â
Which means that when he says he regrets the months he didnât pick up more hours to earn more money, what heâs describing here is boredom. Heâs doing it in the crassest, shallowest, most income-obsessed and unattainable for most of us way possible, yes. But this man is expressing that once he achieved a certain financial goal he relaxed, enjoyed himself, got bored, realized on some level he was understimulated, and then started working more hours to meet whatever stimulated activity threshold he personally needs.Â
This is infuriating because this man experienced the counter-argument to that nonsensical talking point that if we meet peopleâs financial needs with a universal basic income theyâll grow lazy and won't do anything.Â
Anyone trying to develop $200,000 in passive annual income is not working three minimum-wage jobs to live paycheck-to-paycheck. This manâs basic financial needs were met. Working more hours to make more money is just his own personal code for âI still needed to use my mind to do thingsâ (using what might be the only metric of personal achievement he might actually have). This man lived the argument for universal basic income and I genuinely donât think he realizes that. Once his basic income needs were met he still needed to do things to keep himself stimulated and engaged with his own life.
You see a version of this play out with retirees who leave their jobs, go home, and very quickly find themselves in need of new activities or friends or engagements to keep them present and stimulated in their lives. Ensuring someoneâs basic financial needs are met doesnât make them stop doing things, humans donât work that way.
Reblogging for the psychology lessons
There is, I believe, a line in an Agatha Christie story about a man so desperately unhappy he doesnât know heâs unhappy. âAh, a rich man,â responds the nun.
the thing about the mummy movies is that you really spend most of the time thinking "wow brendan fraser's character is so cool" or "man oded fehr is so mysterious and heroic" when the fact of the matter is that these two
are the absolute most batshit insane heroes in the entire franchise
these two are intellectual loner siblings with archeology backgrounds who read and speak ancient egyptian, hire a dude directly out of prison to take them to a lost city of gold, and fight mummies literally with their bare hands. twice.
no one in these movies stands a chance against the carnahans. frankly they're lethal in how willing they are to make the absolute and most undeniably deranged decisions. jonathan pickpockets a dude on fire. evy's resurrected from the dead and immediately remembers how to use sai. they're racking shotguns from a cliff in this scene and then proceed to blow away half the antagonists.

Butcher's Masquerade - That epilogue!
I finished reading the last chapter of book 5 last night but didn't start the Epilogue. Husband insisted I listen to it this morning as I played my mobile game. My goodness!
I just turned 43, but I have to say, trying to figure out what Skibidi Toilet was, made me feel much older.
It's basically a bunch of 14 year olds (and younger) who have had their first taste of surrealist content and because it is so novel to them, they can't get enough of it. And it has become extremely popular.
It has a perfect storm of features built in to appeal to that age group. First and foremost, their parents don't get it. It frustrates older people. But it isn't objectionable enough for parents to put their foot down and say they can't watch it for arbitrary moral conflicts. It's like Baby Shark for tweens.
And so these young people get to truly explore what weirdness is. How it makes them feel. And it gets to be... just theirs. They get to claim ownership of it and have this community surrealist experience together and then laugh at their parents because they're all, "Okay, but why is the head in a toilet?"
Kids are exploring the limits of their imagination and finding the wonders of surrealism... in the most infuriating-to-parents way possible.
A tale as old as time.
I'm betting there were some caveparents thousands of years ago looking at doodles on the cave walls and just shaking their head.
"Grok, my son... what the shit is this?"
The cycle continues.

The human condition.
When I was in ninth grade I wanted to challenge what I saw as a very stupid dress code policy (not being allowed to wear spikes regardless of the size or sharpness of the spikes). My dad said to me, âWhat is your objective?â
He said it over and over. I contemplated that. I wanted to change an unfair dress code. What did I stand to gain? What did I stand to lose? If what I really wanted was to change the dress code, what would be my most effective potential approach? (He also gave me Discourses on the Fall of Rome by Titus Livius, Machiavelliâs magnum opus. Of course heâd already given me The Prince, Five Rings, and The Art of War.)
I ultimately printed out that phrase, coated it in Mod Podge, and clipped it to my bathroom mirror so I would look at it and think about it every day.
What is your objective?
Forget about how you feel. Ask yourself, what do you want to see happen? And then ask, how can you make it happen? Who needs to agree with you? Who has the power to implement this change? What are the points where you have leverage over them? If you use that leverage now, will you impair your ability to use it in the future? Getting what you want is about effectiveness. It is not about being an alpha or a sigma or whatever other bullshit the menâs right whiners are on about now. You wonât find any MRA talking points in Musashi, because they are not relevant.
I had no clear leverage on the dress code issue. My parents were not on the PTA; neither were any of my friendâs parents who liked me. The teachers did not care about this. Ultimately I just wore what I wanted, my patent leather collar from Hot Topic with large but flattened spikes, and I had guessed correctlyâthe teachers also did not care enough to discipline me.
I often see people on tumblr, mostly the very young, flail around in discourse. They donât have an objective. They donât know what they want to achieve, and they have never thought about strategizing and interpersonal effectiveness. No one can get everything they want by being an asshole. You must be able to work with other people, and that includes smiling when you hate them.
Read Machiavelli. Start with The Prince, but then move on to Discourses. Read Musashiâs Five Rings. Read The Art of War. Theyâre classics for a reason. They canât cover all situations, but they can do more for how you think about strategizing than anything youâre getting in middle school and high school curricula.
Donât vote third party unless you can tell me not only what your objective is but also why this action stands a meaningful chance of accomplishing it. Otherwise, back up and approach your strategy from a new angle. I donât care how angry you are with Biden right now. He knows about it, and he is both trying to do something and not doing enough. I care about what will happen to millions of people if we have another Trump presidency. Look up Ross Perot, and learn from our past. Find your objective. If it is to stop the genocide in Palestine now, call your elected representatives now. They donât care about emails; they care about phone calls, because they live in the past. I know this because I shadowed a lobbyist, because knowing how power works is critical to using it.
How do you think I have gotten two clinics to start including gender care in their planning?
Start small. Chip away. Keep working. Find your leverage; figure out how and when to effectively use it. Choose your battles, so that you can concentrate on the battle at hand instead of wasting your resources in many directions. Learn from the accumulated wisdom of people who spent their lives learning by doing, by making mistakes, by watching the mistakes of their enemies.
Donât be a dickhead. Be smarter than I was at 14. Ask yourself: what is your objective?
This box contains every material component for every wizardcastable can trip in D&D 5th edition. It also contains a book I put together with every verbal and somatic component described. I also made some Scrolls of identify because pearls and feathers are too fun to not have in a box of components. Detail pictures in the next reblog.
All the necessary material components.
Hello Mr. Gaiman!
About the last episode of Good Omens Season 2, when Aziraphael says "Ofcourse you said no to hell. You're the bad guys." Will his opinion of these Heaven-Hell dynamics ever change or will he be just as frustrating in season 3 as well? đ
I'm really sorry, but Aziraphale won't be in Season 3.
His replacement, Garry the Gorgeous Gopher, who will be puppeteered by someone who wins a competition on Tumblr, isn't interested in good and bad, Heaven or Hell, but will spend the entire season lipsynching to early 70s pop hits. You'll love it.
i love the strange reality of being a human person with a human brain. one time someone said something to me in a foreign language (japanese, which i do not speak) and i automatically responded in a different foreign language (spanish, which i do not speak well) and then we both said "what?" in english, an experience made more surreal by the fact that everyone around us was speaking loudly in canadian french (as this occurred in Quebec)
brain: ah yes a Foreign Language! i have One of Those!
official linguistics post
NOT. ONE. WORD. ANY OF YOU.
My brain loves foreign languages, especially when I'm in France, in which case it decides that all nouns are German, or in Germany, in which case it hands me obscure and long-forgotten French words.
:->
utterly losing my mind that literally right as i was putting up our display for banned books week coming up in september, my boss got a call saying that the county higher ups have declared that weâre prohibited from saying âbanned booksâ in association with any library programs or materials. âfreedom to readâ is okay apparently, but the phase âbanned booksâ is, well, banned. if i tried to publish this scenario in a novel, my editor would probably send it back with a note saying that the irony is a bit too on the nose & that i need to tone it down a little. we have censored the discussion of censorship. i cannot handle how hilarious this is
New page! Merry Pridemas, everyone! (I didn't plan this, the timing was just perfect)
