My thoughts on the new version of the pride flag
A new version of the pride flag was released from Philadelphia with a black and brown stripe added to represent people of color in the LGBTQ community. Well while I think this has good intentions, and racism still plays a part in society- not just with the gay community, the pride flag was never about race. Instead it was about pride in your sexuality no matter if you’re black, brown, white, Hispanic, etc. The colors are all symbolism for things like sex, healing, harmony, the human spirit, etc. One of the first times the pride flag was marched with was after the assassination of Harvey Milk, who was a huge part of the gay rights movement, and who asked the creator of the flag to come up with a symbol of pride for the gay community as a whole, and that’s what it does. It does not discriminate, but stands for pride in sexuality. I’m for pride in oneself, whether it be sexuality, race, sex, etc. But the flag itself should stay the same as a symbol for LGBTQ pride for everyone no matter what race. The intention is super important but I feel that adding these colors, in all honesty, won’t really help the issue of racism within the gay community, or outside of it for that matter. I do think there’s a big problem with it I just would like to see maybe something more productive and coherent than adding colors to a flag about sexuality which is a separate issue itself.
I totally agree. The pride flag is about universalism and diversity. It’s about bringing us together, not sub-dividing us into different groups of people. No colour stands for a person or group. The colours signify values and virtues. I would be in favour of the creation of a new flag to represent the different LGBTQI+ communities that face additional layers of discrimination like people of colour and people with disabilities, etc. But it seems antithetical to the intention of the original flag to segment the community by sub-groups. And if we’re going to do that, why is it only race that gets an acknowledgement? Why isn’t it race and disability?
i don’t care if the lesbian flag was only made in the last 3 years it’s nice to have it & makes us happy. and i mean no one should fucking complain about lesbian pride while “kink pride” flags are still a thing
What’s your problem with kink? Why the problem with kink pride? Bit judgey if you ask me…
you aren’t lgbt for wanting to be spanked
That doesn’t make you kinky either. Read a book.

On my second date with my wife I got us takeaway pizza. During our first date she joked that she had a sixth sense and always managed to pick out the most expensive thing in the store. In a 99¢ shop she’d manage to find the only thing that was $10. I was picking the pizzas up on my way over to hers and my mobile was dead, so I winged it and got her a Hawaiian pizza. When she opened the box she was horrified and very disappointed. I offered to split my pepperoni with her.
She: “So you really thought I’d like this? It’s awful.”
Me: “I think it’s gross, but you said you always like the most expensive thing, and this was the most expensi-”
Apparently, our first kiss was also the moment she fell in love with me.

The "real" reason JMo got dropped from Once...
So word on the street is that JMo got dropped from Once, not the other way around. It’s really shitty if it’s true that she ‘aged out’, but on the other hand if Once is going to do something about its lack of POC representation (or diversity in general) then maybe it’s a mixed bag? I suspect what’s most likely is that the writers ‘wrote’ themselves into a deeply unpopular corner and needed a 100% reboot to salvage (or have any chance of salvaging) the show. I’m not sure why the network agreed, but I’m definitely happy to have Regina/Lana grace my screen for a few more weeks, but I dread to think how they’ll tank the least remaining shred of Regina’s awesomeness in their swan song final season flourish.
If anyone is to blame for Emma going from ‘youthful badass’ to ‘boring fogey’ the writers don’t need to look any further than the nearest mirror.

hi, what are your thoughts about why did she announced her departure right after the wedding and 1 week before the final episode? thanks
I know Mitovich said the news was scheduled to be delivered by media on the same Monday but…in my opinion it means nothing.
The news was supposed to go out? Fine. There are 2 parts in this negotiation: the network and JMO.What Mitovich said simply means JMO’s management already delivered the news and it was scheduled to be released on Monday after the musical episode.
Is there an OFFICIAL ABC statement? I don’t think so, unless I missed it.
JMO’s management delivered the news to the media, she published her instagram message a few hours before the articles were released, and the fact that no one heard a word from the network should tell you they didn’t like it and they never wanted to deliver it before the finale.
Why she did it? Cause she didn’t get what she wanted in negotiations while others did and she was pissed off.
Hmm. I think it was a cunning attempt to save her rep as a lead actor.
JMo announcing that she’s walking before the network has announced whether OUAT will be renewed is a cunning move. It’s a win-win for her. If OUAT is cancelled, it makes it look like she was carrying the show and OUAT can’t survive without her. If it gets renewed, the rest of the cast look like a bunch of losers she left in the dust (who probably also agreed to a pay cut). I suspect the decision to cancel OUAT has already been taken and that it is cancelled, that JMo somehow got word of it, and beat the network to the punch by saying she decided to walk before any decision is announced. If the network had announced that OUAT was cancelled before JMo announced that she’s leaving, then JMo wouldn’t have got a lick of media and nobody would have cared. Better to be the dumper than the dumpee.
Those negotiations must have been really bad - like big pay cut bad. I’m sure she was making the most out of the cast (with the exception of Bobby Carlyle why else would he have stayed this long? he must have been raking it in). If OUAT is being renewed then it would have best served JMo’s interest to hold out as long as possible - or hold off threatening to walk - until the last minute.
If OUAT is (by some miracle) renewed you can bet JMo walked because either:
she wanted more $$,
wouldn’t agree to a pay cut,
wouldn’t allow another lesser-known actor/actress to be paid the same as (or more than) her (cough, Lana, cough cough)
Nevertheless, it’s pretty poor form to say you’re walking before the season finale has aired, but right now (right before the 2hr season finale) is the only time when she would have been 100% sure that her announcement would get maximal coverage and, crucially, there was 0% chance of the network announcing OUAT’s cancellation. By announcing she’s leaving before the finale airs, JMo managed to look like a star carrying a failing series.
Not even a little bit classy.
So somebody tweeted a picture of a pretty badass looking Chinese air display team, and within minutes Twitter’s vibrant trolling community collectively lost its sh*t, in the mistaken belief that Hollywood has remade Top Gun with an all-female cast…
lol! and awesome.
Hollywood should make an all female top gun movie then!
“Aerobatic flying is a career for the adventurous. Few of the world’s air forces boast any women aerobatic fighter pilots. In December 2013, the Bayi Aerobatics Team of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force recruited its first female pilots. One year later, the women staged successful performances in the 10th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition.” (source)

UPDATE: One of the pilots, Yu Xu, (2nd from left in the original post) died in an accident several months ago in an accident on on 12 November 2016 during the 10th International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, China. You can learn more about it in the South China Morning Post’s coverage.

It was so hard to be able to afford flying to see her friends and family every week. Feel sorry for her you peasants who actually have to move completely when you have a job away from friends and family that you’re lucky to see once a year. Poor little rich girl was sooooo tired at all those parties and fashion shows.
#Suffering for you peasants
The crew always works harder than most of the talent. Sorry, but when actors are in their trailers going over lines, eating, S L E E P I N G, the crew is working their asses off. The crew rarely takes breaks, aside from lunch. Plus they get paid way fucking less than the actors.
Talent like her, the ones that bitch and moan about their “grueling schedules”, piss me off to no end. Like, yeah sorry Jen you work 12-18 hrs on set, mostly waiting around for your scene to shoot, and make millions of dollars. Boo hoo
Ya know what, I rarely chime in on shit but this ^^^ is just sad. I could not care less about this actress and her (IMO) questionable talent, but Envy doesn’t look good on anyone. She makes more money? Yep. And she works for it like everyone else. It’s not a personal failing that she works in an industry that pays more for facetime than behind the scenes workmanship. That’s the profession she chose and apparently that’s worked well in her favor. That doesn’t mean that her personal life isn’t hard for her. Save the ‘Comparative Pain’ bullshit for your own life and don’t force it on someone who’s personal life you know absolutely nothing about.
That crew that bust their collective asses behind the scenes? They should absolutely be paid a hell of a lot more and be treated a hell of a lot better. There are Unions and other avenues to pursue that when and if they decide they’ve had enough. As a greatly underpaid worker in an At Will conservative republican based State I would kill for even a fraction of those options. Do I begrudge them those options? Not in the slightest. They banned together and suffered and worked even harder just to have those choices. If the people in my industry can’t figure that out as a whole then who the fuck am I to begrudge another industry the choice to exercise the rights that they’ve fought for.
Again, envy is the mental institutional green of the emotional spectrum and it does NOT go well with anything that is healthy.
I can’t speak for the poster above you, but my annoyance with that comment is not envy. I admire anyone who can make it to the top of their industry.
My annoyance is with the tone deaf entitlement dripping from that interview. Having the means to fly back and forth to see your friends and family is a privilege. Being employed for 13 years straight is a privilege. Having a career spanning a lifetime is a privilege.
I can think of at least three of her co-stars who were homeless or on the verge thereof at some point in their careers. We know Bex struggled before OUAT because she told us about it. How much you want to bet she’s thrilled at the reality of being able to travel now.
She has many reasons to be bitter. She was turned into a love interest on her own fucking show. Her big arc was stolen. She was overshadowed from day one by someone who was at that point a NOBODY.
She has many valid reasons for anger but choosing to travel to see friends and family should not be one. That’s just rich people nonsense.
Ugh. I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that “some”.
I’m also wondering if I’m the only one who noticed Lana didn’t mentioned her once in the last conventions. She talked about SQ of course but she avoided JMO name in all the replies to the questions about the cast. She loves working with Ginny, Josh, Bex, Sean, Bobby….these are the ones she mentioned. There’s only one missing. lol
So yeah JMO sounds like one who didn’t get what she wanted and she’s letting everyone know.
You know, JMo never really gets mentioned AT ALL at the cons by others. Can’t imagine why ….. 🙄
And yeah I agree with her privileged tone in the interview. I don’t live near my friends and family. I also don’t have a job that allows for nor the money to flit off to see them every other weekend. That would be nice wouldn’t it?
JMo grew up in a privileged life. She didn’t have to struggle for much. I can’t help but wonder what people like Bobby and Bex and Lana, who did NOT grow up privileged and had to work their ass off for even the smallest opportunity, have to say about her attitude.
I also find it interesting that those are the three that seem to be the most caring toward the fans. 🤔
I hate to say this, but girl is from Arlington Heights one of the many lovely suburbs of Chicago that were created during the white flight era. I have been up and down many suburbs and the sense of superiority and entitlement is grown all over Chicagoland. This attitude doesn’t surprise me at all. Unfortunately snobs outnumber the non-snobs. Even if they don’t intend it ,it comes off as snobby.
I won’t begrudge her busting her ass to provide me entertainment which she did, but it does come at some cost that she evidently tired of. I also don’t think she has been happy with the direction Emma went for a long time. She couldn’t get questions that weren’t about The CS ship at the cons and she couldn’t answer SQ ones -she was always interrupted and many were innocent friendly ones. Emma Swan was the heir to Buffy Summers and got regulated to Buffy-Bot. Its been a known fact that she is on Tumblr just not publicly. Don’t think she hasn’t seen all the criticism of the downfall of the hero to zero and that had to have killed her. She wasn’t happy and it showed up on-screen unfortunately too many were distracted by Killy’s chest hair to notice, but those of us that gave a shit about Emma Swan as something other than eye-candy or a self-insert did.
I think Jmo should be ripshit. She should be furious. She was wronged by the show and the fandom.
Granted she chose to snub the fandom that wanted her to remain the star of the show and embraced the one that wanted her to be nothing but a bland self insert.
That said, she got a bum deal and I do not blame her for walking away. The complaining about having the privilege of flying around, though. That rubbed me the wrong way
JMO’s epic humblebrag made me feel physically ill.
That’s something a child would say, not a woman in her 30s. Grow the fuck up and behave like a grownup.
IMHO Eddie and Adam bear 100% responsibility for Emma’s character assassination. I can’t blame her for not wanting to continue. But...
I think her announcement was intended to scoop the announcement that OUAT won’t be renewed. And it makes her colleagues look like desperate losers for not walking too. I can’t wait to read about what really happened on the Blind Gossip. Sounds like JMo was a nightmare on and off the set.
Also “some colleagues” - total dick move.

When the fuck did Tumblr get so anti-trans?
Like, what the fuck is wrong with people? Trans folks have enough shit to deal with. Trans women are women, Trans men are men. Experiencing cis-privilege or male privilege prior to transitioning doesn't make someone less of a woman or less of a man. Fuck right off with that bullshit.
in other news today i found out that eddie redmayne has a degree in art history and for his diploma he wrote a 12k words analysis of a picture that’s basically a blue square on a black background; the thing was it was a very unique shade of blue, actually used there for the first time ever; however, being colorblind, i quote, he had no idea what the colour was but well, it looked very pretty to him
and somehow i find this very uplifting i mean if you can pull sth like that off, write a 12k words thesis on a colour you don’t even recognize properly, anything is possible and this is the story of how eddie redmayne officially became my saint patron of high level academic bullshitting
Why are so many people assuming he’s bullshitting? There must be something about the blue he can see because he recognizes it. He sees it in his way. I’d love to know what he sees.
Also, bejeezus Christ at that level I’m going to assume it’s more than about the color. It would be about the history of the color. It’s impact. Why it became so important.
To call it academic bullshitting is to take away from ER’s work. He defended that dissertation. Have you ever been up before a defense committee? They rip you and your work apart. They’re considering letting you into their little club and they will not make it easy.
i’m torn between defending the rigor of academia and my hatred of art.
Your hatred of art doesn’t take away that a lot of art has deep profound meaning and reason for existence. Yes, there’s a great deal of pretensiousness in the art community and a lot of art that seems utterly pointless, but there’s a whole world beyond that. You don’t have to like it - no one has to like anything - but it is still important and should be discussed and written about and learned about just as much as any other subject. And @ashermajestywishes I’m with you… I don’t necessarily believe he has to be bullshitting. People all perceive colour differently as it is, and some people can see an entire range of colours that other people’s can’t even distinguish from each other. But you have no way of knowing excatly what any of colour looks like to any other person. I really hate how OP said “a colour you don’t recognize properly” because who is the baseline for how a colour should be recognized when we all see them differently?
of course it has profound meaning, but it’s only for the fancy people initiated into the mysteries. which, i suspect, is how most non-academics feel about academia.
The big difference, though, is that you can look at a piece of art and wrote a 12k word dissertation or you can look at a piece of art and say, “that’s pretty” and they are both completely valid assessments of the piece.
I think what you hate is certain art movements (possibly modern art, definitely postmodern art). The term ‘art’ is all encompassing, from the early cave paintings all the way to Swan Queen fanart (which is actually a part of the current contemporary art era). Art is a series of eras and movements that sometimes co-exist but basically follow each other, but they all start and end for a reason and they are all important.
The modern art era ran from 1860 to 1970 and it was the time when people decided that art could be more than painting a scene as is - it could be used for freedom of expression. While a lot of it might seem ridiculous (and pretentious and pointless) it’s part of a movement in which people decided art didn’t have to conform to a rigid structure and anything you created could be art.
Postmodern art immediately followed and was a contradiction to the modern art era. It was relatively short-lived, and a time when people decided that the artist doesn’t have exclusive rights to tell you what their art means, and people got to decide what it means to them. It’s not exactly pretty to look at and mostly confusing, but the movement itself restructured art all over again.
We are currently in the contemporary art era, which was born from postmodern art, and will also end and something else will arise from it (or in response to it), but I think it’s important to note that things like fanart are a part of contemporary art. With postmodern art, there was a distance that existed between the artist and the viewer (hence the rise of art snobbery) and in contemporary art that distance isn’t so important. The artist and the viewer can connect on a different level through the art. Fandom is helping to shape the art of today in a way, and when this era ends, future generations will be able to look back and see how our current world impacted the art of this time and learn about what our society was like.
You don’t have to like any particular art movement or piece of art. Art is incredibly subjective and if you’re not an art scholar there’s no reason that you have to know or care about the meaning of any particular piece of art if you don’t want to, but these art movements as a whole absolutely paved the way for things like fanart to exist. We might never have had Swan Queen manips if not for a blue square on a canvas. That’s why it’s important.
I suspect this had the opposite effect of what you intended. I am aware of art history in at least those broad strokes. I have a good deal of educational capital. I still feel profoundly alienated by art due to lack of cultural capital. It’s not for me. That’s fine. Not everything is for me.
you post folks’ art on your this here blog tho.
@angstbotfic - You’ve got a totally valid and really important point - my actual paid job is to help break down that barrier between people and art and I can tell you that barrier is real and very substantial. A lot of the artists and art critics do a really shitty job of communicating their ideas and it’s also true that many of them want to see deep and confuse depth of meaning with sounding pretentious. Academic rigour is never pretentious, rather it’s about communicating ideas clearly and precisely. Not a lot of people are good at that and they do come off as assholes. Also, I really agree with the excellent points made by @rowark-sq and @ashermajestywishes I think it’s important that people feel confident enjoying the fullness of the world around them, and art is absolutely part of that and is there to be enjoyed. If people feel the totality of art (not individual pieces which we can all give or take) is not for them, then it’s up to the art world to do a better job reaching out to people and empowering them to connect with art. One of the reasons I love the SQ community is how creative its artists are at bringing into relief some part of the relationship that brought us all here in the first place. I don’t see a vast gap in the importance of artists like Rothko and artists who make SQ art and use Tumblr as their primary platform because it’s not about fame or acclaim, it’s about making something that makes somebody else feel something real. For me, that’s what makes great art. fwiw, I’m sure ER wrote a good thesis on a blue painting, but I’m also sure the whole thing wasn’t about that one piece - he would have had to contextualise it historically, in the broader oeuvre of the artist, compare it with other work by the same person, etc. I’m also sure it wasn’t bullshit - unless he failed! And if that painting made him feel really strongly, then good for the artist and good for him. Despite what Tumblr would have you believe, we academics can (and do) identify bullshit and mark it accordingly.
Holy Shit
You are damn good at your job.
@ashermajestywishes That's literally the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me about my work.
