4 Poses to Help Get Your Heels Flat in Down Dog
Tracking productivity? Everyone loves lists!
I'm going to start making a list every morning outlining (3) fairly big items that must be accomplished by end of the day, (1) big item that I can make progress toward accomplishing, and at the end of the day, (3) things I'm proud of and (3) things that I could've done better.
Lists will probably be kept private :)
First week back at a gym
This was my first week back in the gym in over eight months. I realized that I'm totally out of shape, but I'm quickly making progress and feeling much healthier. Everyday, little by little, I'm going to get better.
Jan 26th, Sunday:
- 30 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes running at 5.5mph
Jan 27th, Monday:
- 30 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes running at 5.5mph
- Very light back, bicep, and rotator cuff exercises
Jan 28th, Tuesday:
- 30 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes running at 6mph
Jan 30th, Thursday:
- 30 minutes on the treadmill, 4 minutes at 5.5mph and 4 minutes at 6mph
- Very light chest and tricep workout
Jan 31st, Friday:
- 30 minutes on the treadmill, 6 minutes at 5.5mph and 4 minutes at 6mph
- Very light back, bicep, and rotator cuff exercises
I'm back..
About a year ago, I made a promise to myself to get back in shape. After a solid three months, I lost 20 pounds! From 200 to 180lbs. This blog chronicled my journey.
Fast forward about 9 months to today. So many things have happened: I moved from DC to NYC, I started a business in Brooklyn, and I've been reunited with friends and family I haven't seen in a few years. Amazing.
There's really one thing missing in my life. Shortly after I hit my goal, my healthy lifestyle started to slip. I didn't gain much weight, only a few pounds, but I feel incredibly out of shape, I'm often stressed out, I drink way too much caffeine, I sleep poorly, and I never take a second to relax and breathe. It's time to fix this.
I'd like to consider everything before this moment as Nothing Happens Organically, Part I. This marks the start of Nothing Happens Organically, Part II.
In this part, I'm going to work meditation, yoga, gym classes, healthy food, and sleep into my everyday. I'm also going to assess my spiritual side and make it a point to practice gratitude and humility on a daily basis. All with the goal of reflecting on my progress in 2 months.
Good luck all, it feels good to be back.
Took these for a spin and loved it. Probably my favorite sneaker. Thank you, Nike.
Let's go! 180.8! .8 lbs until I hit my goal weight.
If you want to get precise, I actually lost 23.2 lbs from early November. 15lbs since I got the Fitbit Aria scale on January 1st.
I typically weight myself every morning before I eat or shower. My next goal will be 178lbs weigh-in during the evening, which will require another ~3lbs drop. Then that's it. I'll just work on gaining a bit of muscle, toning up, and decreasing my body fat %.
End of the month and I'm at 182.4! This is EXACTLY where I wanted to be. I wanted to hit my goal weight (180) by the end of March. 2.4lbs left to go and a month to do it!
Okay, that did it. En route to the gym.
Thank god for my Dashboard.
I'm on struggle street. Need to get to the gym.
I'm not a huge supporter of logging calories, but the reason why I decided to do it at the start of my journey is to identify the foods that I most frequently consume and to identify ab killers in my diet.
Here's a list of the most frequently logged items. Pretty damn good, eh?
During the Super Bowl I ate some pizza, tons of chips, and a couple of beers. I did that to 1. be a good Amurican and 2. reward myself for my good habits. Looking at this chart, it's no wonder why I've had success losing weight over the long-term..
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

Trainer workout #2
My trainer broke me.. again. Here's what we did:
* no rest in between sets (unless you feel like you’re going to vom) *
* compound exercises & super set galore *
* repeat each exercise 4x between moving to the next exercise *
Exercise 1:
Single leg dumbbell squat (8) - with one dumbbell held to the chest, not with two dumbbells held at the side.
Explosive jumps (10)
Exercise 2:
Incline dumbbell press (10)
Some sort of standing dumbbell row thing, I'll ask him for the name (10)
Exercise 3:
Machine lat pull downs (10)
TRX Pike (10) - if you don’t have TRX at the gym, you can use a stability ball instead.
Burnout Exercise (perform 2x with 1 minute of rest between each):
Push sled 60 yards and back 60 yards as fast as humanely possible without stopping.
My opinion? Worth it.
