Nick Suzuki surprised Cole Caufield with the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy before Caufield surprised Suzuki with the Frank J. Selke Trophy. 🏆
So proud of our boys 🥹💙🤍❤️
She got the idea for the study while walking with her advisor at Stanford to discuss her thesis topic, and the paper she eventually published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 is sharp enough that it should have ended the seated meeting on the day it came out.
She ran 4 experiments on 176 people. Same person tested twice. Once sitting, once walking. The creativity tasks were the standard ones psychologists have used for decades to measure how good a brain is at generating novel useful ideas.
81% of participants in the first experiment produced more creative ideas while walking than while sitting. In the second experiment, 88%. In the third, 100%. Every single person walked into a more creative version of themselves. On average, people generated 60% more novel useful ideas the moment their legs started moving.
The skeptical question is the obvious one. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the scenery passing by. Maybe it was the change of environment doing the work, not the walking itself.
Oppezzo killed every one of those explanations with one experimental decision. She put people on a treadmill facing a blank wall. No scenery. No fresh air. No environmental change. Just legs moving in place while staring at white drywall. The 60% boost held.
Then she ran the experiment that closed the case completely. She took participants outside in two conditions. Half of them walked through a Stanford courtyard. The other half were pushed through the exact same courtyard in a wheelchair. Same outdoor stimulation. Same scenery passing at the same speed. The only difference was whether the legs were moving.
The walkers produced dramatically more novel high-quality ideas than the wheelchair group. The outdoors did almost nothing on its own. The walking did everything.
She also tested the opposite kind of thinking. Convergent thinking. The kind where there is one right answer and you have to narrow down to it. Word puzzles where 3 words share a hidden fourth word that connects them. The seated participants did slightly better on these. Walkers got slightly worse.
Walking is not a general intelligence enhancer. It does one specific thing. It opens up the divergent search inside your brain. The part that generates options. The part that produces unexpected connections. The part that takes a problem and finds five ways into it instead of one.
When you need to converge on the single right answer, sit down. When you need to find the answer in the first place, get up.
The mechanism is now well understood. Walking selectively activates what neuroscientists call the default mode network, the system inside your brain that runs when you are not consciously focused on anything. The DMN is where mind-wandering happens. Where memories cross-reference each other. Where ideas that have been sitting in separate folders inside your head finally bump into each other.
When you sit at a desk and force yourself to concentrate, you suppress the DMN. When you walk at a natural pace, the executive part of your brain gets just busy enough handling the walking that the DMN comes online and starts doing the work that focus was blocking.
The most useful finding in the entire paper is the one almost nobody quotes. The boost did not turn off the moment people stopped walking. Participants who walked first and then sat back down stayed elevated. Their next round of seated creativity work was still significantly better than people who had been sitting the whole time. The rest lingered for at least several minutes after the legs stopped moving.
You do not need to do creative work while walking. You need to walk before the creative work. The brain holds the state.
Edited down a long tweet. (x)

Can you remember the most happy you've ever been after watching a game?
Yes, very specifically, I remember which game made me the most happy
Sort of - not totally sure, but I remember a specific few that got me happy
I've been happy before but it's a mishmash in my head of which was the best
No, I don't remember stuff like that
No, I've never been happy from watching a sports game
Nuance
Why doesn’t ESPN recognize that the PWHL exists? It gives scores for the Savannah Bananas 🍌, multiple pro lacrosse leagues, snooker, and NBA G league. But no PWHL?
Like obviously a really big piece of it is the crippling depression but I really do think a lot of Ilya',s frustration with Shane's fear around coming out comes from his utter lack of context/understanding/knowledge of how much racism Shane puts up with and how that affects him
(yes obv this is because RR also lacks that knowledge but shush we're being Watsonian for a minute)
And I am desperate for a scene (read: it's on the WIP pile but someone PLEASE take it off my hands) where Shane finally has to explain to Ilya that aside from his image, the reason he never fights is because if he dropped gloves with every asshole who said something racist to him he'd spend more time in the sin bin than actually playing and Ilya STILL doesn't really get it until they're on the same line and he's hearing it firsthand and Shane has to stop him from earning constant penalties trying to defend Shane's honor
The thing that gets missed so often about why Shane feels like he has to be perfect is not some nebulous fear over disappointing people, it's that he is hyper conscious of how quickly and joyfully the league would use any tiny slip up to get him out of their beautiful white sport, which is a burden Ilya simply does not face, and Shane is RIGHT! As someone else said in a great post, Shane makes one tiny mistake, trips on ice, and immediately his team turns on him and it's a significant domino in him losing everything he's worked for. The fact that he manages to land with Ottawa is frankly irrelevant - Shane has to be perfect because as an Asian man, he is not allowed to be anything less and still keep doing the thing he loves
SAY THAT!!!!!!

13 years ago, I picked up my best friend.
auston matthews has never in his life disclosed information about his health to the public, even once the season is over and it can't be used against him on the ice. he tried to kill steve simmons in a press conference over revealing his personal medical information. now we have the intricate details of his knee injury posted on the team social media accounts and his agent out there making statements to the press about suspending the department of player safety for being incompetent. I think pissed may be an understatement for how he and the leafs and his team feel about the radko gudas situation right now.
whole city gay 🏳️🌈
I kinda want to frame this photo to go with the painting of Enterprise Center on my office wall. @mountvebuchius gorgeous!
I remember reading an anecdote about an award winning architect, who was bemoaning having to show his houses to women; while his male clients would appreciate the grand vaulted ceilings and intricate light displays, women would just bombard him with practical question about how one would live in, clean and repair them.
Anyway, more women in architecture and furniture design, please.
Also, more pockets.
We especially need more representation in the architecture approval process. Planning commissions, planning departments, etc. especially for public facing builds.
Maybe THEN we can finally get bathroom designs than don’t result in unending lines of people stretching out the door on the women’s bathroom side.
A St Blues! Jo drawing I whipped up real quick. I know his number isn't officially 27 yet, but I have an educated guess that's what it will be.
Not me being all sure about what his number was going to be and then being wrong...
