Katara was debating whether to cancel all her afternoon appointments and take a nap on her office couch when a tentative knock sounded on her door. She set the file in her hands on her desk and rubbed the bridge of her nose under her glasses. A headache was brewing, for sure. And where the hell had she put her coffee mug?
“Hey, doc,” Huria, one of her medical assistants, said as she swung open the door.
Huria took one look at Katara hunched over her desk in the semi-darkness and slunk apologetically across the room. She had a medical file clutched against her chest as though it were a precious treasure, and Katara narrowed her eyes, suspicious. “We have a new patient request.”
“We don’t have capacity for any new patients.”
“Unless,” Huria said, holding up a finger, “they come directly from the medical board.”
Katara pursed her lips and held out her hand. “Let me see it.”
Huria hesitated. “Okay, but try to have an open mind.” She cautiously began to hand it over, and Katara rolled her eyes before snatching it away from her.
She flipped the file open and scanned the first page.
Patient Name: Aang Gyatso
Age/DOB: 26 / Oct 10, 2000
Referring Entity: Emergency Directive via the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery / Sports Medicine Board.
A Note from Administration: HIGH VISIBILITY PATIENT
And there, under the word ‘Occupation,’ it read: Professional Martial Artist/Content Creator
She snapped the file closed. “Absolutely not.”
