“I do understand that much, believe it or not.” Severus said cooly, choosing not to get into that discussion by commenting more on the matter. “What do you mean by hope?” He asked, her comment having caught his interest. “You have a strong minded family, words will never hurt them. I’d worry more about actions.”

Dorcas gave him an intrigued look. She didn’t know the boy much, but he always seemed a little mysterious to her. “Oh? So how do you plan to change that?”

“I’ve got some things in mind, someone’s absence just makes it easier on me to actually enjoy this.” He shared, not minding if he was saying more than intended.

When Sev went onto explain first why he was there and then why he was wearing a suit of Valerius Mulciber, she felt like she was interrogating him and immediately felt bad about it. She was in no position to make him feel like he had to explain stuff to her. They only kissed once, it wasn’t like there was a relationship where they had to tell each other everything…

Realizing where her train of thoughts were going, she coughed away a choke and tried to shake the thoughts away. She was there with a date too, with the boy she claimed to like and yet she also thought about her kiss with another boy, who was her former best friend. What a mess! And the way he looks at her and talk wasn’t helping her confusion either so she decided to not comment on his words, looking away, hoping she didn’t blush. “Oh please, you’ll just bring her drinks, chat and dance with her at the worst case scenario and I can’t imagine spending time with you would be so bad, Sev.” she chuckled. “Where is she now?” she asked curiously, her eyes searching for the girl.

The more he stood there normally talking to Lily, the more at east he felt. He’d had missed that and regretted having shamelessly avoided her so much after the moment they’ve had had together at the last party. “You only say that because you somehow enjoy being nice to me, but... no, I’ve never been good with parties or balls or whatever this is” he explained. He didn’t mind having gone with Emmeline, not even if he had basically almost begged her; after all the girl had been a good sport about it and he couldn’t complain, even if he had wasted about an hour of her time. “Oh we just kind of separated. She went off to talk- well, mostly dance, with some of her friends, so I was just leaving, actually.”

Andromeda waits for the boy to walk away before she smiles a bit at Severus. “Sometimes people can be so arrogant. Are they really that bored with their lives that they have to make up lies about others?”

Needing fresh air an a less crowded place, Dorcas excused herself from Stefan for a moment to walk out of the Great Hall. Taking a deep breath, she felt someone was nearby, and turned in they direction. “I don’t know about you, but I’m having a wonderful night!”

"That makes one of us" sev said taking a look around, a slight smile appearing when he didn't spot Potter anywhere. "But that could change."

Severus was walking around when he spotted commotion out of the corner of his eye, turning around he noticed andromeda throwing her drink at someone. He laughed as he approached them, clapping his hands. "50 to Slytherin for that, Andromeda. Who knew you had it in you."

“You know, being dressed up like this makes me feel cool for once.”

“Forced?” Lily asked, brows raised as she tried to see how that would happen. “Didn’t know you were that close with Mulciber.” she muttered when he mentioned borrowing s suit. She couldn’t tell Sev to who to befriend or not but it really did bother her that the people he chose to be associated were those elitist Slytherins who were obviously future deatheaters. She sighed, deciding to not make any more remarks on the topic for she didn’t want to argue with him that night. She went there to have fun and she wasn’t going to ruin it by discussing Sev’s friends. “Oh I think it’s a muggleborn trait. You have to learn how to fit in in both worlds, we’re like little chameleons.” she chuckled softly. “Not really.” she replied his question, mimicking his answer. She was curious who she brought. “Who’s the lucky lady?”

Severus cleared his throat, trying to hide his awkwardness at her question. There was no way he was going to tell her the real motives for him attending the ball but at the same time he couldn’t come up with a proper explanation. “Uh, yeah I lost a bet with a friend so she made me come, as friends that is.” The lies flowed out quickly as he shrugged casually. “And I’m not really close friends with him but he was nagging about how all Slytherins had to look good so he let me have it. I would not have been able to afford one otherwise.” Sev explained. “Maybe it is, but you do stand out with amongst those that share your background. You always stand out... and that would be Emmeline. I wouldn’t call her lucky, though, I’m not really good at these things.”

James was still missing and after talking to a lot of different people, and even dancing with them, she was worried that her date wasn’t going to show up for the rest of the night. Despite having a good time with other people, she was tired of having to stand at a corner every time a slow song came on. She was once again waiting and hoping James would appear out of nowhere and maybe even ask her for a dance but who appeared was not him. Lily wasn’t expect to see Severus at the ball let alone find his lean appearance very handsome in a suit. He looked nice, whether he was aware of it or not and for a moment she was ogling. She quickly recovered, blaming her reaction to her lingering feelings after their shared kiss at the party and smiled at him, putting aside whatever argument that was left after she confronted him about the incident at the party. “I’m not. But neither are you and look who is here.” she chuckled. “You look really nice, Sev. Very fitting in the environment. You should have attended these more often.” she said, putting a hand on his forearm affectionately. “Did you come alone?”

Seeing Lily without James gave him a lot of relief, so much indeed that he forgot he was already planning on leaving. “Yeah... I was forced.” Sev smoothly lied with a shrug of his shoulders. “Not I don’t, I borrowed this from Mul...” He awkwardly drifted off knowing Vale’s existence wasn’t well appreciated after the torture rumors. “Uh, you look really beautiful, you fit in a lot more than me though. You always have.” A slight sigh left him as he said that. It wasn’t always that he found at an event like that anyways; he placed his hands in his pockets and smiled at her a little as he shook his head. “Not really... you?” Asking that brought back the anxiety, and he glanced around quickly to ensure that Potter was in fact nowhere to be seen.

There was nothing more that unamused Severus than the idea of attending a ball with half the people he disliked. For a while he had deliberated not going, but when he heard a rumor of Lily possibly attending with none other than Potter he changed his mind and upfrontly asked to the ball the only girl he knew would take pity on his cause, Emmeline. She somehow agreed and the next thing he knew is that he was surrounded by  girls in sparkly, glamorous gowns and boys in their best suits. Severus forced himself to have a decent time and spent the first hour talking to Emmeline and avoiding any activity that required having to dance. Once he noticed she had gotten bored of his routine he offered to get drinks, which mainly translated into using that as an opportunity for the two of them to do something else. He slowly wandered around for a while, stopping only to briefly talk to some of his housemates before he finally decided to leave. It would have made things easier for him to leave right away but just as he was turning to leave he spotted Lily alone. Seeing her there alone was odd, seeing as it brought back specific memories from the last party, and for a moment he just stood there, noticing how beautiful she looked. It didn’t take much to convince himself to go talk to her so he did, slowly waving his hand at her as he approached her. “I thought you weren’t much of a party girl.”

She knew this conversation wasn’t going to go easy the moment she realized Sev wasn’t looking at her. She sighed, shifting her weight onto her other foot. “I acknowledge it as a whole, actually.” she muttered. “You kissing me, then I kissing you.” she started and let out a sharp sigh at finally letting the words out. “And then James appearing and that ridiculous duel of yours.” she scoffed. “What were you thinking, Severus? He got seriously hurt! And you could’ve gotten hurt yourself!” she exclaimed, horrified how both boys seem to take it so lightly. She reached out to him, in hopes of getting a few explanations out of him.

Severus shifted awkwardly again when Lily brought up the kiss. He didn’t regret it, there was no way he regretted it, but he knew the timing had been wrong and that bothered him. “Well James did start it...” he mumbled out, knowing it wouldn’t make a difference pointing that out to her. “I wasn’t thinking, I was just defending myself, I didn’t know he had gotten that hurt.” He lied. “And he actually hurt me too, that spell of his that knocked me out ended up bruising my back, not that it matters...” he whined, shaking his head. “I don’t know what you really want me to say, Lily...”

“Looks like I’m not the only one who can’t sleep” Narcissa spoke softly as a figure approached the swing she had been idly swinging back and forth on for the past ten minutes in the moonlight. “Or is there some other reason that you’re out here past curfew?”

Severus was walking back to the castle after having his afternoon out by the forest picking up potions ingredients. He knew it was now past curfew so he took a different than usual to avoid prefects, it was then when he jumped at the voice he easily recognized as Narcissa’s. “Are you always this eerie?” he wondered, composing himself. “I don’t have reasons, why can’t you sleep?”
