like buddy? i’m sorry but no. that’s not how this works. you don’t get to tear the creators and the show apart for something, say the entire season sucked because of that one thing, leave purposefully shit reviews of the season which actually influence the show’s ability to make more show, threaten to stop watching, ruin everyone else’s experience of the show by putting your negativity on posts made by people who genuinely enjoyed the season and want to share the positivity, and after all that, claim to also love the show. if you love the show, act like it. 

you can love something while thoughtfully & constructively criticizing it. not while outright hating it.

I don’t watch Voltron but I’ve been reading the discourse about this new season that just dropped and I think honestly the only valid reason I’ve found for people to be upset about is the Adam thing. At SDCC, they made it seem like he and Shiro were gonna be some big LGBT+ rep but all they really showed was almost nothing and then they killed Adam? Rude.

i mean they are LGBT+ rep. they haven’t stopped being that. they’re both mlm and we didn’t lose that just because adam died. 

here’s the thing: people keep pulling out the bury your gays trope as a valid complaint as if the show cruelly ripped the potential for adashi/shadam to have a happy ending. like they had made them a happy couple and then for no reason at all decided to kill adam off for the sake of it. 

that’s not what happened. shiro and adam weren’t a couple anymore. they broke up. they were estranged. and honestly, as one of the best fighter pilots in the garrison, it made perfect sense for adam to be first in the line of fire to defend his planet. he was a soldier. he died a soldier. he died protecting his planet. this is what he signed up for. that didn’t come out of nowhere. that was expected. 

and hey, if anything, it provided a very sobering moment for shiro. now he knows what it feels like to stare at a name on a grave and think “if only things were different, we could’ve had a little more time together.” 

so, unpopular opinion, i wasn’t that upset when adam died. he was a very minor character despite being someone from shiro’s past (emphasis on the word past). shiro is wonderful queer rep and he’s alive and well and he’s a main character and he’s growing and developing right before our eyes. i’m more interested in focusing on that.

I'm seeing so many people angry over Adam dying and calling the EPs homophobic and all that but I feel like they're forgetting that in the show they're fighting a war, and people die. Being lgbtq doesn't means a free-of-death card, but I guess people just don't understand that

@arahir‘s tweet right here really sums up my complicated feelings on this.

Adam died a war hero, too, for the record. I do wish they’d spent a bit more time on him, yes, but the season had too many other things going on as it was. I’m hoping they’ll address it in s8 but we’ll see!

This has been especially frustrating to discuss here on tumblr bc there are queer fans who are angry and who are calling people out who aren’t angry as somehow ruining something (rep, I guess?) for them. 

Problem is, I’m queer, too, and I know a lot of other people who feel the same way I do about the season are also queer. So it’s really hurtful to pit people against each other like that; claiming, for example, that bc I’m queer I should be upset about this. I’m not. I’m not upset about it because it didn’t feel at all like the “bury your gays” trope, which, believe me, I’ve been hurt from time and time again. 

For example, Charlie on Supernatural. Well-established lesbian character killed off for shock value and to make the main male characters sad. 

And, an example that hurt the most for me and ultimately made me stop watching the show, killing off Lexa from The 100. Clarke/Lexa was a great ship and the show set it up purposefully to make it seem like they would have a future together. The show made viewers invested in them. Spoilers: Lexa was killed, pointlessly, by a stray bullet, in their bed right after they’d reconciled & consummated their relationship. It was meant to shock the audience and to cause angst and pain for the main character without any thought to the pain and shock of the fans, nor to the potential of the queer relationship they’d just thrown out the window. THAT is a “bury your gays” trope. 

Adam is not.

In the end, I guess Shiro is the only immortal gay on Voltron, we can’t have it all.

we weren’t queerbaited

while it is unfortunate that adam died, i think you guys are taking things sooooo much farther than they really are. adam was literally just a plot device to show that shiro is interested in men. that’s literally all his character was there for. and while the crew shouldn’t have hyped their relationship as much as they did, we were not queerbaited by them. they were broken up and were no longer together!! the only people who queerbaited us are ourselves for making up head canons of shiro and adam still being together once he got back. that isn’t canon, just our own fantasy!! and i’m tired of people saying they killed off the lgbt rep….they didn’t!! shiro is the main lgbt representation and that’s it! he’s the one we are suppose to be focusing on, not his ex who was there for a minute tops to once again show that shiro likes men! he doesn’t have to be in a relationship in order for his gayness to be valid and legitimate. shiro is a strong poc disabled man and is gay, and that’s so so amazing on its own!! stop overlooking everything and being entitled to how the show writes it story. respect and love what we have, takashi shirogane.
