I am consuming a media and you are going to hear about it
and the thrilling sequel: i consumed a media months ago and you are still hearing about it
and the cautionary conclusion: the media has consumed me

Kirk of Riverside
He captained the most famous of starships through space and time. He is an inspiration to millions, both in the future universe he occupies and in the world we know today. He is Captain James T. Kirk, and he started his voyage through life in the little town of Riverside, Iowa.
That is the story, but how accurate is that story, and how did it start in the first place?
A post by @stra-tekĀ about the unveiling of a new Kirk statue inspired me to do a little research, and I found out that Kirkās Riverside home became a fact simply because the city council there declared it be so.
Former Riverside Councilman Steve Miller of Riverside read the book āThe Making of Star Trekā and found out that Kirk was born in Iowa, but exactly where in that state was not specified. āWhy not Riverside?ā Miller wondered.
He proposed to the rest of the council on March 25, 1985 that the town declare itself The Future Birthplace of James T. Kirk, and future history was created.
āRiverside quickly altered its town slogan from āWhere the best beginsā to āWhere the Trek begins,ā and changed its annual summer festival from River Fest to Trek Fest. Miller jabbed a stick into the ground behind the town barber shop (he owned the property) and declared that it was the future birth spot. An engraved monument was eventually placed on the spot for present (and future) fans. Later, a bench was added for contemplation along with a Shuttlecraft-shaped donation box for upkeep.ā-Roadsideamerica.com

The city asked permission from Gene Roddenberry for official sanction of the declaration. Ā āWhen Mr. Roddenberry was contacted, he said, āThatās a very enterprising idea. As far as Iām concerned, the first volunteer has it,āā according to Miller.
The town was now Kirkās official birthplace and home of Trek Fest, and Miller wanted a statue of the captain because⦠well, how cool would that be? Unfortunately, Paramount Pictures wanted a licensing fee of $40,000, and there was no way the town would pay that, not to mention what it would cost to actually make the thing.
Miller caught a break, though, when William Shatner himself came to town during the filming of Invasion Iowa, a TV reality series about filming a fake science fiction movie.
āAs fortune would have it, William Shatner came here in 2004, and I gave him a cigar,ā Miller said. āOver cigars, he conceded that he wouldnāt have to pay anything for his image to be put into a statue.ā
The community raised the $30,000 cost of the statue in various ways (anyone care for some āKirk Dirt?ā) and proudly unveiled it June 30, 2018.
Now, this is pretty dang spiffy and everything (itās super awesome, actually), but there is one small problem ā it still is not canon. Paramount Pictures can endorse it, Shatner can approve it, and the town can build all the statues it wants, but unless it shows up on screen it isnāt canon.
Itās pretty close though. Several novels (Best Destiny, Final Frontier) have put Kirk in Riverside. And in the Kelvin Universe, while Kirk was born on the U.S.S. Kelvin, he did grow up in the town and once destroyed a very nice automobile there.
So, almost canon ā as close as can be. And all because someone once thought, āHey, how cool would that be?ā

Update: The statue unveiling was on June 30, not July 30 as I originally wrote.
I still remember the day I first watched Star Trek and I thought, "Wow, Kirk and Spock would make a really good couple, I wonder if there's anyone who ships them," and then I looked up 'Kirk and Spock' on the Internet and the first thing that came up was the fucking Wikipedia article about the history of slash fiction and that it was Kirk and Spock who invented modern fandom.
Yeah I didn't know it was a thing until 2019 and I was like. People have hidden the gay subtext from me... I would have started watching star trek sooner if I'd known.
It's funny you should say that, because Gene Roddenberry based Kirk and Spock's relationship on Achilles and Patroclus
not sure which is which, but one of them is definitely the other's achilles' heel
I am fighting so hard right now not to dump my essay on which one of them is Achilles and which one is PatroclusĀ (and on why TMP illustrates this perfectly)
i think star trek should write an in universe reason why some series donāt have swearing and some do. make it a universal translator glitch or something.
the captain of each ship can turn the swears on or off when they want to
Kirk would have kept the swears on but any ship carrying Dr. Leonard McCoy is required by Starfleet regulations to turn them off
How dare you keep this in the tags @narwhalsarefalling
[Image description: a set of tumblr tags that say "#the tags from op are hilarious #spock gets briefly placed on a ship where the cursing is turned on and it turns out heās been cursing like a sailor this entire time. #āfascinatingā is the universal translatorās way of making āfucking nuts dudeā starship appropriate #turns out when the translator says āillogicalā spock is actually saying something more like #āyour asshole and brain are indistinguishable from one another. do you really fucking need me to explain this you illiterate piece of shitā #i cannot decide which would be funnier: if it turns out all vulcans talk like that actually #or just spock. #star trek #tos."
Followed by a screencap from Star Trek: The Original Series showing Spock raising an eyebrow, it is captioned in all caps, "Fucking Nuts Dude."

They're having a moment but what moment it is! "Why are you turning green?" And "time you and I stop fooling ourselves" oh my gods...
Spock hesitating naming the feeling šš And Spock staking his career to save Jim, hello Search for Spock parallel!
In space, no one can hear you bitch
That's why they sent Doctor McCoy up there

i have a friend who has kinda bad eczema on their right hand but their left hand is fine and thats because acidity makes eczema worse and that includes vaginal acidity and my friend is both a lesbian and a slut so they finger a lot of people and that fucks up the hand they use (their right hand). Anyways do you think BBC sherlock would deduce that by looking at my friendās hands
nothing couldve prepared me for the last sentence
From the outside Star Trek looks like a serious show constantly, then you watch it and realize about 55.5% could be summed up by āwe fucked around and found outā
the other 44.5% is unintelligible technobabble
Slaps roof of Star Trek, several control panels explode....
The only AI-generated art I will accept:
i work for a historical association and in one of our libraries i found a hand-gilded book of poetry calledĀ āstar magicā and im not saying that i work in the real world equivalent of the tower at palanthas im just saying WHO HAS TIME TO HAND PAINT THAT MUCH GOLD LEAF
update: its a 1980s star trek kirk/spock fanzine full of poetry and it has a hand drawn gilded picture of spock in it
hide that shit before the university of iowa gets wind of it and knocks down your doors to acquire such a rare fine vintage of kirk/spock
As someone from Iowa Iām messaging this to them at once so we can get our greedy little corn hands on this beaut and maybe I can go look at it in person

@uispeccoll we have a new one yāall need to get!
I will never forget the day I found out that there are only two copies of this really specific Dionysian text that was copied from ancient scrolls in like the 1600s, and one belongs to a practicing revivalist sect in Greece, the other is in Cedar Rapids
Just a clarifying note. The āgildingā referred to would be silk-screening, an artistic (and extremely effective) technique that was used sparingly in zines back in The Dayāstarting with Interphase #1 in 1975. That was a Star Trek zine of course. In my zine library I also have examples of Starsky and Hutch and Blakesās Seven zines using silk-screening.
Interphase actually wasnāt the first silk-screened zine. Energize! was published five months earlier in February 1975. Connie Faddis (the editor of Interphase) was involved in the production of Energize! and contributed art, including the silk-screened cover and centerfold. There was drama between her and Candy Silver (the editor of Energize!), which Connie cited as the reason she began Interphase.
For easy reading: Between world and stars
Far-flung amid the cold, dark
Emptiness of space,
Living-flesh things dareĀ to probe
The secrets hidden for countless ages.
On silver, ice-crystal steeds
They charge,
Undaunted by danger,
Meeting challenges and unknowns
As though they were Dieties
Protected in their steel-armoured covering,
Projected in Matter, Anti-Matter propulsion,
Seeking new frontiers, new horizons.
These all too fragile beings,
How minute their bodies,
In all this infinite void.
Yet how full their capacity
To seek, to know, to love,
To share wonders, ideas, dreams,
To teach and learn and grow
In each otherās Image.
