Nude is not Rude

Also known as The Naked Writer on Twitter, I'm a writer and photographer who has got fed up with the prudification of society, and the double-standards seen around nudity. Why is it acceptable to see brutal crimes depicted daily on our screens, but not a woman breastfeeding, or someone nude on a beach? It makes no sense. This Tumblr will carry pictures of artistic nudes, and people doing everyday things without clothes on. Nothing rude. I may also post things about my writing on here from time to time.Some content is mine, with the remainder sourced from the internet and believed to be either public domain or sharable. Le Sommeil [The Sleepers], which depicts two women entwined in a post-coital embrace, caused a stir when it was first shown in the 1870s. The police were called in, and the painting was not shown again until the 1980s. But its brief showing had an influence on a number of contemporary artists, and helped challenge the taboos associated with lesbian relationships. For modern audiences it’s a good reminder that people in the 19th century were not ignorant of lesbian relationships, as we tend to believe. And it’s pretty damn sexy, don’t you think?

The best part is, the lesbian embrace isn’t even the biggest thing that made the painting so controversial, it was the art style. People in the artistic community at the time were wholly familiar with sapphic relationships being portrayed in art, but were used to these scenes being portrayed in the ‘academic art’ style, which consisted of smooth, simplistic, idealised versions of the nude female form. This often went hand in hand with the depiction of Roman & Greek allegories to illustrate certain ideals (think Cabanel’s Birth of Venus). Courbet’s journey into realism was met by heavy critique from the academic movement, as the women he painted were, well, more realistic. Leaving in details such as the rolls of fat around the ribs acted as a blunt reminder to the audience that these were not euphoric goddesses caressing in ecstasy, but ordinary women having a nap together after making love. Other realist paintings suffered the same controversy, Manet’s Olympia is a perfect example, where the problem was not that the painting depicted a nude woman in an erotic pose, but the fact that she was just an ordinary courtesan, given an identity & portrayed in a place of power & control. Realism humanized the female form in art, & removed it from its previous role as a representation of the ideal.

So what disgusted people about the painting wasn’t so much that Le Sommeil depicted two women, but rather that it depicted two ‘real’ women.

Today was a day of overcoming past insecurities. Today I was naked in front of strangers and I’ve never felt more comfortable in my own skin. I didn’t focus on how my stomach looks when I sit down, or how my thighs rub together when I walk, or how my skin looks without makeup. Today I simply swam, talked, and hung out with my new friends. I forgot my nakedness and just had fun. Today I accepted and loved my body just how it is, and that is a beautiful feeling. #bodypositive #loveyourself

My Journey

This morning, as I set on the side of sand dune, watching the sunrise I wondered, what it would might have been like if I was raised in nudist family? Now coming from a family where growing up, as a kid, nudity was sinful. It was wrong and dirty. If I happened to be nude, in my room, and my mother saw me, I was scolded and told to put something on. I can’t even recall one time, when I saw my mother nude. She always covered up. So I wondered, what it must be like to be raised in a nudist family. Since I started my journey and experimenting with nudity. I found the joy of nudity. More importantly my self esteem as increased as well as my own body image. I look forward to being with friends who are nudist. I look to my girl friend, who has two beautiful girls and raising them as nudist. I see happy girls, well adjusted girls When I see them sitting on their fathers lap, there is nothing sexual or dirty about it. Seeing the girls running around house and yard nude I wished that I could have done that growing up. So as the red morning sun felt warm on my skin, somehow I felt cheated that I wasn’t raised in a lifestyle that I have grown to love and cherish. Like this morning, I cherish the moments where I can be nude outdoors, relaxing and enjoying the moment. I enjoy these moments so much, I think when I start having a family of my own, I will be raising my children as nudist.
