“I think I’ve had enough excitement to last me the rest of my time in education now. It’s actually good to think about how all I have to do this weekend is some homework.”
“Oh, I’d imagine that would be frustrating. They really should have a few stops along the way to pick students up who live closer to Hogwarts. Would give the rest of us a chance to stretch our legs, too. — Though I suppose they just want to get to school as quickly as possible,” she mused. Truth be told, she WASN’T okay. She was as far from okay as she could imagine, but if she started thinking about it too much, she would panic, and that was something she didn’t have the energy to deal with right then. “Oh, yeah, just a headache,” technically not a lie, “it’ll pass soon enough. How was your summer?”
“They really should. We can at least floo down to London, but if my parents weren’t magic it would be really awkward. We’d have to get at least two trains before we even got to the Hogwarts express, with all our trunks and everything. Or drive. If we could just go as far as Birmingham, it would be a lot easier.” He nodded sympathetically at her complaint of a headache, then grabbed a bottle up from the little pile of his things on a nearby groundsheet. “Here, you should drink some water. Everyone’s been eating nothing but sugar, and drinking nothing but alcohol. It’s no wonder people are getting headaches.” He held the water bottle out to her. “My summer was pretty good. Nothing terribly interesting happened, but it’s always nice to have a break from school, and some time with the family. How was yours?”
Happy to be rid of the burden he was ready to return to the solitude and comfort of his quarters but the guy kept speaking, wasn’t Eryx making it clear he’d heard enough and this little exchange was at an end? “Honestly, I’d rather they not, it will be good to test our skills when we aren’t being handed everything we might possibly need.”
Owen shrugged. “That depends what skills. It’s not exactly great for everyone who’s not seventeen yet, is it?” He himself still had a couple of weeks to go until using magic out of school would be legal, and he hadn’t yet figured out where the teachers would stand on him doing so here.
“if y’gonna be unhelpful, get outta my way. you can stay if you’re gonna help, or race me.”
Cnycha ei. There’s not much else to pass the time with, is there? I’ll grab my broom. What’s the course?

Normally, at school, Owen swears in Welsh so that people who don’t know him as well (and teachers) don’t realise that he’s swearing. However, it’s more natural for him to swear in English when it’s a case of the words just slipping out.
“Oh, please shut up. Even if we were near WHEREVER you lived, you’d never be able to get out of the perimeter they’ve set up.”
“I wasn’t suggesting that. It was just curiosity. And in part wondering how long it would take an owl to get home and back.”
Eryx had to fight the urge to roll his eyes, the unending stupidity and innocence he was surrounded by was enough to drive anyone up the damn wall. He had offered it, so why was he now being asked if he was sure? It was senseless, too polite even for him, a man who’d been coached in every aspect of manners and society. Plus, why all the extraneous information? Eryx didn’t want a life story, he was just attempting a good deed. “I have more if you’re so concerned.” He offered the thing again, tired of standing around looking foolish with a blanket in his hands.
“Thanks,” Owen said, taking the blanket, though he was honestly not so fussed about having one. If he saw someone else in need of one it would be easier to have it on hand than to have to start a chain of sending people to other students who might have some spares. If he didn’t, then his cloak could stay clean and fresh for whenever they actually made it to school. “You’d think they’d send a few more things down for us. Well, actually, you’d think they’d send us a way to get up there now, but even so.”
“Or prioritizing which classes that we take. Or which are required after a certain point in our curriculum. I’ve spent a lot of time considering the vast number of ways that the quality of our education could be improved, yes. It’s something we should all consider, seeing as how we do not even have a post-secondary school option.”
“That’s because most jobs have specific on-job training so you only have to know what you’re doing early enough to make sure you take the right NEWTs, and even that’s only important for the jobs that require specific NEWTs. What’s wrong with how it is now?”
“Aw come on, if we can terrorize the first years, what else will I do for fun?”
“Have a catch up with friends you haven’t seen all summer. Read a book. Whatever you were going to do for the train journey before we broke down?”
“The nonsensical staircase is on my list of grievances with Hogwarts’ design that needs major improvements and updating. Its structure hasn’t much changed since its founding and more modern architectural design would serve the school well. Would even leave room for extra classrooms so more diverse subjects could be taught.”
“I think there are probably enough classrooms when you consider the size of the place. The problem is having enough teachers and enough time in the timetables. You’ve thought about this a lot, haven’t you?”
“And exactly how practical is that, for an educational institution that is responsible for minors to not have a contingency plan should something go awry? Not even magic is fool-proof. As is clearly being demonstrated by this mishap.”
“You’re suggesting that Hogwarts has ever been practical. The school with a staircase system that means you have to allow twice as long as you’d think to get from one lesson to the next and occasionally jump fake steps.”
“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty sure this is how horror movies start. Next thing you know, first years are going to go missing.”
“Oh, don’t say that. They’re already starting to freak out from their own scary stories, without the older students adding to it.”
Annoyance was perhaps an understatement, Eryx had planned this first day back down to the seconds and now everything was a mess. However this was a lesson, in learning to adapt and be prepared. Seeing younger students struggle to put up tents was almost worth the delay. Eryx had been given one as well and with the simple flick of his wand it was erect. The decor inside the tent was beyond unacceptable and with a few simple adjustments he made the space more inviting and much less practical. As he exited his new temporary living quarters he stopped the person walking by “I made duplicates of these, you can have this if you’d like.” He was holding out a down blanket, a deep emerald in color. Generosity got one more than it’s opposite after all.
Owen was on his way back to his tent after checking on his little sister. She had been happily chatting with her third year friends and seemed a little exasperated at his fussing over whether she had everything she needed, but he couldn’t help but still worry a little bit about her. Busy in his thoughts, he nearly didn’t notice the seventh year was talking to him. “Oh! Are you sure?” he asked. “I just gave mine to my sister. I was going to use my cloak. I don’t want to be a bother if someone else might need it.”
“I mean, I’m all for getting brooms out and seeing who’s best at dodging trees. cause I’d floor all of yous.”
“We probably shouldn’t go too far from the train.”
freddy decided a laugh would be the most civil way of politely and firmly disagreeing. “i did thanks, sunshine and rainbows and never ending chit chat, quite agreeable. yours?”
“The usual sort of deal. Family stuff. Beaches. Not so much of the sunshine in North Wales, got to be said. But we had a little, and there’s always getting to visit the cousins to do a bit of sun chasing.”
“I hope they wouldn’t mind…I mean just looking around everyone is using magic to get their tents up and all..” Daphne nodded looking around. “Right, we just need to all stick together and keep our wits about us and be aware and we’ll be fine, right?”
“There’s no muggles to see, and we’d be at school by now if it weren’t for this, so we’d be allowed to. I’m still probably going to try most of all this without, but a little to keep us all safe isn’t going to worry them. Right enough. Here, sit yourself down a bit. It’s going to be alright. You can tell me about your summer or something while we’re waiting.”
“No, there’s not much, only a spell to say where north is but you can roughly work that out with the placement of the sun or stars.”
“I think here, we’ll do fine enough just looking at the railtracks and which way the train’s facing for that. But that’s only useful if we’re going to try to walk the rest of the way. Most probably not a great idea when we don’t even know how far it is.”
