So just as a heads up

I’m going to be changing blogs.

I’m had this blog for so long and everything is messy. There’s baggage and old hyper fixations and tags that lead no where. I love it, but it’s time to let it go.

So, I’m gonna make this my archive, and I’m going to move. I’m going to keep my url, as it’s one of the few things I want to take with me LOL, and I’ll be reaching out to a few mutuals, but if you want to follow me, please just drop a message!! I’m doing a lot rn so it’d be helpful

I had a blind professor, last semester, and I swung through his office to make up an exam. It was a while before I knew he was in there because he was sitting with the lights off. I finally went in, apologized, and took the exam by the light of a nearby window (which was fine). Forty-five minutes into dead silence he panicked and yelled in this booming voiced, “WAIT, YOU CAN SEE!!!” before diving across his desk to turn on the lights. I’m sure he was embarrassed but I thought it was endearing and it highlighted a large aspect of disabled life that I hadn’t previously considered.

Sort of relatedly I once had professor who was deaf, but she had learned to read lips and speak so she could communicate easily with hearing people who didn’t know sign language. One day she had gotten off topic and was talking a little about her personal life, so that one of the students said “Oh, I know, I grew up in Brooklyn too.” 

She stared at him for a long time and then said “How do you know I’m from Brooklyn?”

And he said “You have a Brooklyn accent.”

She said “I do?” and the whole class nodded, and then she burst out laughing and said “I had no idea!  The school where I learned to speak was in Brooklyn.  I learned by moving my mouth and tongue the way my teachers did.  So I guess it makes sense that I have their accent, I just never thought about it.”

Gandhi only wished to “prettify” the caste system, the New York based Dalit writer said at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

“How could one say Gandhi was an anti-caste man? He really wanted to preserve the caste system, and why he paid lip service to the upliftment of untouchables is because Hindus needed a majority against Muslims for political representation in the British government.

“That was the only reason Hindu leaders ever took up caste issues,” Gidla said.”

This conjured such a powerful image of the scene with the fortune teller during book 2 (I think), where she seems stunned when she hears the MC’s name and is like “MC? Asra’s MC??” And I just imagined the MC experiencing a like violent whiplash of memories of Asra being blazed and doing shitty “”seductive”” dancing in the shop, Asra getting a paper cut and just casually but with full feeling like “Fuck™️”, Asra cooking breakfast in the mornings with nothing on at all, and the MC just being like

“.........yeah. Yeah that’s me. Asra the Magician’s MC.”
