Israel? Really?
Not Denmark’s awesome song? Or Estonia’s native language opera with the cool dress gimmick? Or Italy’s native language political song (which seemed powerful, but there wasn’t a full translation, so...)
I mean, I had expected France or Italy, definitely, but Israel?
This is worse than when Ukraine beat Russia in 2016.
A Story and a Rant from my Sister
So, my little sister sent this over to me, and thought it would be appropriate to post it on Tumblr. She’s a Biology major and an honors student at a University in New England. It’s a bit rambl-y and rant-y and covers a lot of ground, but please read it. You’ll be glad you did.
This is an account of a Saturday morning conversation I was tangentially involved in at the dining hall of my university. I was halfway through my breakfast of bacon and French toast, which I had smothered with syrup and butter, and was listening to a conversation between a female acquaintance and her male colleague. The flow of the conversation had swept the two of them to the topic of bullying, something I have never experienced myself, and thus had no stories to share. I quietly consumed my meal listening intently to their experiences.
The male started, explaining that he had autism and was picked on because of his disability in middle school. His bully would verbally abuse him and isolated him from the rest of his classmates. This bully had a weakness, a peanut allergy, so one day he slipped peanut butter into his sandwich. The girl burst out “You could have killed him!” and he paused briefly. I have an allergy so I contributed a nod in agreement to her statement. He resumed the story concluding that the bully just ended up in the hospital and is still alive today. She further inquired “What was your punishment?” to which he stated “I never told anyone, why would I?” The conversation continued to the categorization of what his actions entailed, attempted murder, and floated to the next topic.
The female branched off from the idea of middle school. For a bit of background she is an American with one of those super mixed heritages and is an ‘asexual’. She described her experience with the afternoon bus at her middle school. The buses would come in, a student was assigned to hold the sign with the bus number, and the vice-principal or some administrator would call the number of the bus that just stopped and gesture to the group to go to the bus to board. She tended to be assigned the duty of sign carrier, so the administrator was the main focal point of her story. The women administrator could be likened to a drill sergeant; she would scream the number and swear at the middle schoolers until they boarded the bus. What the girl remembered clearly was how she would “not even start by yelling the number to grab their attention, instead she would start off angry at the first call.” The boy interrupted “She did that to elementary students!” She responded that it was middle school so they were used to swear words at that point; it was just the unwarranted anger that bothered her.
At this point I was done with the food on my plate and was finishing the water in the plastic made in Mexico cup provided by the dining hall. Luckily, I did not bring it to my lips the moment the male acquaintance asked with a straight face “Was she black?” I placed the cup down astonished at the words that just transpired from his lips. The words caressed my female acquaintance’s ear, she slowly answered, cautiously: “Yes.” His response was “then is it okay if I call her a gorilla, cause she defiantly is one.” I begin to sip my water: I recently read the manga Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, so I innocently recalled the scene where Tanaka and Saya are ranking Ohta based on a scale of one to five gorillas. It then dawned on me that it was a racist comment and I finished the remaining drops of water, waiting for the female to respond. Her response was swift: she stated she had some African American blood in her and found the statement offensive. His response was truly remarkable: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you, I just assumed you were all white since your skin is pale.”
In that moment I finally had obtained the anecdote I needed. The social justice warrior movement worried me not because of their goal (I support equality a hundred and ten percent); no, it is the way they move about the issue that concerns me. One of the things they constantly discuss is how judging people based on ethnicity is terrible (no objections); however, they are obsessed with the concept of race and gender. It is always privilege of the majority and the dreaded gender binary. They say equality is not based on race or ethnicity yet they try to devalue the views and opinions of the so called privileged. The fascination with race is what leads to the ability to be versed in racist vocabulary, knowing terms that are either uncommon or (maybe) no longer directly associated with racism. Take the term “gorilla.” By itself, without race being involved, it simply relates to an animal: not offensive at all. Even if used to describe a random person with no race or gender information it could mean a strong person or big person: just an observational metaphor.
The point that really struck me is the idea that, as long as those around you are not offended or do not have their feelings hurt it is then socially acceptable to call people racist remarks and stereotype. The idea racism/sexism is systemic should not be used as a means to bad mouth the system and whine about how some people don’t have to deal with racism/sexism. The whining is just a means to avoid fixing the systemic problem, which they want you to think is impossible to solve, because they themselves are a part of the system. They want to pay lip service to equality while constantly emphasizing divides between people, ensuring no collective unity occurs.
It is about personal gain; by leading a movement that is morally sound, while stalling actions to help others unite, they create issues from nonissues. Remember the gender neutral bathrooms? No one cared if transgendered people used the bathroom they associate with; the most you talk to a stranger about in the bathroom is if the soap runs out, if there is no toilet paper, or other short little conversations: no one knows what your gender is or even your sexual preference.
The concept that everyone is a special little snowflake, with a specific label just for them, avoids the big picture: WE ARE ALL Homo sapiens sapiens. There is one biological category we fall in, one. No matter how special you are, you are one of 7.4 billion others just like you, with just slightly modified genes. Problems like racism and sexism are not inherent in human nature, it does nothing to help the major goals of any organism, survive and reproduce, and in fact I would argue it is a hindrance to that process. Sexism and racism restrict an individual’s pool of mates while increasing interspecies competition, expending energy fighting that could be used for mating. We have laws to support people in cases of racism and sexism: use them! If there are problems in the system fight tooth and nail for more laws to protect fundamental rights. Point out the wrongs and help everyone get involved! Do not focus on segregating certain issues to certain communities. To combat Global Climate Change we will need to as a global community push ALL nations into stopping pollution and CO2 emissions, no exceptions, and we have not nearly worked on space programs enough to even consider it a possible means of escape. We made our bed, but it is us as a collective population of 7.4 billion to decide if we will simply lie in it and twiddle our thumbs before our mass extinction.
The Election
I’ll keep this short.
Impressions of Upcoming Games
Pokemon Sun and Moon:
Haven’t bought a Pokemon game in a while, so I’m not very interested, but my sister is. She’ll probably get it eventually.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare:
Isn’t this just Aldnoah.Zero but with Jon Snow? Actually, that sounds kinda cool... DA KING IN DA SPACE! I SAY FRYYYYY!
Battlefield 1:
I played the Demo; it was all right, I guess. Very pretty, but I’m sure I’d get bored of it after a month. But the Single Player... Man, that Trailer was amazing! I wanna get the game just for the Campaign!
Final Fantasy XV:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
...Yeah, I’m very hyped for this one. Very Hyped. I think my sister is even more hyped than me, since she liked FFXIII.
Other than that, I haven’t been keeping track of upcoming titles.
Word of Advice
If you spend your life with the goal of ‘self-improvement’, and only indulge in the ‘best’ art, the ‘best’ books, the ‘classics’ and the ‘great’ authors, then all you will do is turn yourself into an elitist snob. You cannot improve yourself if you stick yourself into a rut like that.
‘Self-improvement’ should not be your goal in life. Have goals that are less abstract: ‘Find a good job’, ‘get a house’, ‘have a family’, for example. Don’t restrict your media diet, expand it! Nothing is ‘a waste of time’ when it comes to entertainment, as long as you can get something out of it (even if that something is just a smile on your face). Do that, and you might find that you’ve grown as a person when you least expected it.
I have one underlying reason to live: To see what happens next. To see the next movie, read the next book, live the next day. For me, self-improvement is a side effect, not to be striven for, but to stumble upon by accident. I’ll be honest: I feel like I’ve grown more as a person because of that attitude then I ever would have if I had spent every day reading the ‘great authors’ and watching only the ‘classic’ films.
“Que Sera, Sera”, as the song goes.
Thoughts on Current Season Anime I am Currently Watching
Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto: Funny, and bizzare, but not too off-the-wall. Sakamoto is absolutely amazing as a character. Looking forward to Episode 2.
Mayoiga (aka The Lost Village): Currently waiting for Episode 4. I don’t particularly care for any of the characters so far, but I have a feeling I will grow to like at least a few of them. The mystery of the situation has me very interested. Looking forward to the inevitable reveals and probable slaughter.
Ace Attorney: Nails the feeling of the games, so far. To be honest, though, I’m not sure I’d recommend it to someone if they haven’t been exposed to the games. Waiting on Episode 4.
High School Fleet (aka Haifuri): This show has no right to be as good as it is! I went in with low expectations, and now I’m completely invested. Characters are what I expected, animation looks good, but what’s got me invested is the story. I did not expect the direction the show is currently taking with its plot, and I am very interested in seeing where it will go from here. Waiting eagerly for episode 3.
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless: Perfection. The characters are amazing and the humor is absurdly fantastic. I cannot find fault in this show yet. I am anxiously awaiting Episode 3.
You know, I’ve been keeping up with the election, and I’ve noticed something that the media has seemed to miss.
So recently, Trump cancelled a rally because of rowdy protesters, and claimed that he did it for security reasons; but soon after, the area police said that there wasn’t a problem. When I heard that, I felt a wave of deja vu, and realized that Trump had done essentially the same thing Anita Sarkessian had done some months ago, and tried to play it up in the same way.
Disregarding the parallels, I think this act makes Trump look like a coward. After all, we’re talking about a few hundred protesters vs. thousands of devoted supporters. What kind of man faces a relatively small group of protesters and runs away, when he has Secret Service protecting him? Oh, Trump talks big, sure, but when push comes to shove he flees. If he can’t face down a few protesters, how does he expect to face down ISIS, or China, or anyone else on the global stage?
Need a little help
So, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, and I’m using Windows 10. Recently, this little icon’s been appearing on my taskbar, but as soon as I try to interact with it, it vanishes.
Does anyone know what this thing is?
Managed to hover over it today, and this is what I got:
So I googled this, but couldn’t find anything of use to me. Can anyone figure out what this is, why it’s happening, and what I can do about it?

So...
I just watched Episode 15 of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and... whoa, that was heavy. Like, this show’s been escalating, but... Jesus, that went way beyond what they’d done before. Way beyond.
Everyone who watches anime should see this series, no doubt in my mind. It definitely gives some context to Neon Genesis Evangelion, I can tell you that.
Better _____ than ____.
You know the saying “Better safe than sorry”? Well, I don’t really like that saying. It’s used to justify some pretty awful stuff, from police states to censorship. So therefore, I prefer the saying “Better sorry than safe”, because spending your life desperately trying to prevent anything from going wrong, gripped with fear and paranoia, is far worse for a person than the temporary regret and sadness of ‘If only we had done ___, then this would not have happened.’
Tragedies happen. We study them, find out what specific measures we could have taken to prevent them, and then we implement changes. If we spend our days trying to prevent things from happening the first time, all we’ll do is cause ourselves even more pain when those efforts inevitably fail.
Trying to prevent something from happening before it’s even been done once is not the right way to do things. All we can do is prevent repeats of those events. After 9/11, various airlines, under the direction of the FAA and NTSB, installed doors on cockpits that would prevent hijackings like the ones on 9/11. As predicted, such events have not occurred since. That’s all they needed to do.
We cannot predict the future with any certainty. We simply need to learn from our mistakes, and be careful not to violate our principles in the process.
Impressions of News Stories I Heard About Today
These are all from CNN, because my dinky little phone gets to CNN pretty easily.
Russia could be banned from 2016 Olympics after doping report: I mean, the minute I saw this headline, I thought “Tell me something I didn’t know”. It is Russia, after all. Putinland. USSR 2.0. Of course they’d cheat in athletic competitions; I’m shocked they aren’t ‘silencing’ the competition, too. Unless they are...
Though, the WADA’s former president’s name was what caught my attention. I thought it was a typo, but... Dick Pound. Needless to say, that made me spit out my drink this morning. Did not see that name coming. ...Eh... Hm.
$1 million bond for officers in shooting death of Louisiana 6-year-old: I’m happy I didn’t lose my appetite over this one. Just... what the hell, man? How? Why? Well, it’s a good reminder that all this stuff concerning the police isn’t just a matter of black versus white: It’s blue versus everyone else. Take my advice: Don’t trust the police, and steer clear of them. Some are okay, but others... just err on the side of caution, all right?
University of Missouri president and chancellor step down amid race row: Now this puzzled me this morning. I tried to figure out what the big deal was here, and now, I know: It’s nothing. A bunch of people got angry at other people for no particular reason, made demands with no substance behind them, and two people lost their jobs. Much Ado About Nothing, and not in a good way.
This kind of crap reminds me of why I still don’t like the Black Lives Matter movement: Their demands are hollow, without substance, and spend all their time protesting and making noise. To paraphrase Shakespeare, they are poor players, who strut and fret their hour upon the stage, spouting off tales full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Whatever happened to working towards tangible causes? Fight for something, something that can be made into a law, like the successful movements of the past; specify what you want, and then maybe people would take you seriously.
To anyone who plans to create a movement: Do not do what BLM did. Figure out what you actually want, and give people something tangible to latch onto.
Sorry, back to the news:
Starbucks holiday cups? PC nonsense: Much Ado About Nothing 2: Electric Boogaloo. It’s Starbucks, guys. Starbucks. Just go to Dunkin’ Donuts if you’re so upset about them changing a marketing gimmick. Actually, that’s the only way you can actually get any company to pay attention these days: Stop buying their stuff.
Um... welp, that’s just about all of it. Here, have a video.
Oh, For the Love of God
Why is it that whenever I try to find fixes for the HTML5 player in Firefox on Google, I keep getting hits related to getting rid of HTML5 features? Jesus Christ, I just want to get my Youtube videos playing again!
And what’s with the “media.windows-media-foundation.enabled” stuff? I can’t find that in about:config!
Makes a guy want to just switch to Chrome…
I, uh, switched to Chrome. Guess that solves that, then.

“The private life is dead. The revolution killed it.” - Strelnikov , Dr. Zhivago (1965)
Turns out he was right, but about the wrong revolution. He should have said the technological revolution.
I Am So Happy Right Now
I just found out that Windows 10′s Calculator app has a scientific option, and is also a unit converter. “Doing It All For My Baby” by Huey Lewis and the News was playing on my iTunes, and you wouldn’t believe how appropriate it was for that moment.
