Thank you for your colorful letter. It was easy to spot. Mad-ish is better than mad. All you can do is apologize and you’ve done that. So good on you. He’s been to the ranch already, but I’m happy to have you both over at some point. I’m in Ascalon at the moment for a meat and booze festival, but if you give me a day or two of notice I can make it back in time. 

I’ll be looking for another purple envelope. Spirits be with you, squirrel.

Dear Eyna, I hope this missive finds you well and in good spirits!   I’m starting to think Erik just likes to bicker with me, so he finds any excuse to get mad at me.  Alas, I’m sure we can overcome whatever it is so we can move forward with our plans. I will be tied up with some Olivia’s Refuge affairs this week, but come next week, I’d love to arrange a visit to your ranch.  I’ll reach out to Erik and check his availability.   Enjoy your stay in Ascalon!  You must be having a blast at this festival! Your missive found me just fine. I appreciate the concern. Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to you. Flurry isn’t smart and I changed locations while she was delivering my letter to you. It took her a bit to find me again. I don’t mind that you fed her at all.

He’s a bit strange. But then again, so are most humans. No offense. I’m in Elona at the moment. I’m not too tied up though so let me know when the two of you would like to visit and I’ll trek back to the peaks.

I am strong.

Years I spent honing my mind and my connection to the spirits. My mind is strong.

Trials I faced in pursuit of my legend left my body bruised and battered, but I only grew. My body is strong.

No more sitting around. Tonight I summoned a spirit of nature and it whispered of a great pain to the southeast. It is time for my legend to continue. I shall make the necessary preparations.

My feet are sore. Why did I make this trek anyway? For rejection? I suppose it’s fitting. Goes with the theme of everything right now. Spirits, I’m rejecting my own bloody legend. Making up excuses for myself so that I can sit around, safe from the rest of the world. PAH! To the mists with this...this bloody melancholy! I’m tired of it! I’m tired of it.....

An Egg

The sun lowers on the horizon of Ascalon, though the heat lingers. Eyna sighs and tugs at the neck of the leathers that adorn her upper body. She should have thought to wear lighter clothing. No changing it now, though. She’ll just have to suck it up. Her brown eyes scan the surroundings.

The location is a charr village. The village of Butcher’s Block to be specific. The buildings are metal, industrial. Charr and a few norn wander among the meat racks and booze carts, the high metal walls a backdrop to the somewhat festive scene. Eyna watches, but she does not participate. She had already socialized enough that day. Further small talk would surely cause her head to explode.

She closes her eyes as she leans back onto the hill that she rests on. Letting the sound of the festival fade in the background, her thoughts drift homeward. A bittersweet pang tightens her chest. Her father. Recently dead. Not a terribly sad affair. He had gone as many norn do. Fell to a mightier beast on a hunting trip. The bitter part of the whole thing was the guilt at being left a large portion of his ranch. Eyna was the oldest, so it made sense, but she was also the one who had left for near twenty years with little word sent back during that time. Her sisters or her brother should have received the large portion....she...she....

A quiet crunch pulls Eyna from her thoughs, her eyes fluttering open. Was that....? Could it be...? Realization comes over the norness and she bolts up, turning quickly to face her travel pack that rests near her. Opening the top she carefully removes the protective furs to reveal an egg. It is a plain color and scaled in texture. The crunch sounds again, this time coming very obviously from the egg.

“Spirits, finally!” The loud exclamation bursts from Eyna’s lips, but no one bothers to investigate further than a curious glance her way. Eyna, however, is oblivious to the glances. The egg was finally hatching! She had been carting that thing around for nearly two years. She had found it while exploring in Maguuma. It was in an empty nest, the owners of the nest likely becoming victims of Mordremoth. Something had told Eyna to take the egg with her and she had listened. Now she was glad she had!

Carefully Eyna takes the egg out of the bag and places it on her lap. She does not know what will emerge from the egg, but surely it will be something good. The spirits had guided her to take it, after all. She watches eagerly, keeping herself from breaking the egg open herself. 

Minutes pass and the cracking continues. Ever so slowly a hole begins to form on the side of the egg. Small at first, but growing larger with each crack. Eyna soon discovers that the cracking is coming from what appear to be a tiny set of jaws. Soon tiny claws are visible as well. Finally it is visible.

Eyna’s breath hitches. This isn’t what she had expected at all. Her jaw hangs slightly slack and she stares at the creature in bewilderment. What sits before her, its small head poking out of its egg, is a wyvern.

Eyna and Jon; Part 2

I sit on the hard ground, off the path of the sanctuary.  I'm sitting cross legged, partially hunched over a scroll and Jon is sitting in the space between my legs.  He's holding his head up on his own now.  Which means I don't have to hold him all the time.  Which is nice.  It's a miracle I haven't dropped him yet...from a great distance.

He's proving to me more resilient than I expected.  But he still has his issues.  Sometimes he seems to have trouble breathing.  The first time it happened I about had a panic attack.  The Kodan stepped in, though.  Made him breathe in some herb.  They say they've seen the problem before...that sometimes it ends badly.

They say that and I feel guilty.  Is it some sort of sickness that I gave him?  Or was it Meick?  I'd like to blame Meick, but that's not fair.  It could be me.  And then I worry.  Will this kill him?  I tell myself that it can't.  It can't because he's norn.  But that doesn't stop me from worrying.  Not all norn are the same...not all norn live good, healthy lives.

He lets out a coo from my lap and it snaps me out of my thoughts.  These are thoughts I shouldn't be having anyway.  I'm trying to meditate.  He squirms around, reaching for the scroll that's sitting before me.  The little lad's going to be a Raven just like his ma.  I'm a ma.  It's strange.

I pick him up and turn him to face me.  I bounce him up and down, his little feet braced on one of my knees.  He smiles and laughs.  He has the happiest smile I've seen.  And his eyes are still the bluest I've seen...like his da's.  I wonder if they'll turn green like mine...but they probably won't.

Oh well.  He's a perfect little boy no matter what color his eyes are.  Maybe I can find a way to help him breathe with those bloody herbs...

There are many questions floating through my head. First there was that attack from a rabid dire bear. I didn't think much of it. It was simply a bane to travelers and something to be stopped. And last night there were the wurms...the wurms an old man had cared for their entire lives and they just killed him. It was horrible. And that's why I have questions. Rabid animals are not all that common of an occurrence. Is there something going on that we haven't noticed yet? Or perhaps we've noticed it but we haven't noticed the connection. If that is the case I fear we will not see the connection until something equally as horrible or worse occurs. Just thinking about another event like the Bearstone or the old wurm man brings a sick feeling to my gut. Perhaps we should attempt to organize the kin...see if working all together will help us find something. The idea of organizing norn is laughable, but it may be worth the effort. I would be willing to give up who I am for the spirits and those who follow them. I just hope that won't end up being the case.

Arseshanker

The woman is doubled over in a fit of laughter.  Her boar sits lazily beside her, staring out into the distance as she fights to gain her composure.  It's a few minutes before she's able to right herself and speak properly.

"Ah haaaah!"  I had opened my mouth to speak but another laugh came pouring out.  Okay.  This is ridiculous.  I can speak like a normal norn!  "'e's a bloody arseshanker!"  I wave my hand at the boar beside me and he tilts his snout up, almost regally.  The bastard expects praise.  That's as far as I go into the explanation that's got me laughing so hard, though.  The real reason...well...

Those who witnessed the event probably thought Dinner had just attacked the way he did because it was the best route available.  We'd been fighting a dire bear and when I commanded Dinner to attack he'd charged the bloody thing and stabbed it right in the arse with a tusk!  It took all my willpower not to fall over laughing during the fight.

Back to my line of thought.  People thought he'd done that particular attack just on his own.  Lucky for me they don't understand the commands I've been using!  Some grunty language the ogres use.  But it works!  Anyway.  His habit of shanking asses isn't his own deed.  It's what I've been training him to do.  Here.  A translation of the command I gave.

Food-Name!  Use tusk, hard poke rear region!  Stab!

I forgot the word for stab until the end...but hard poke worked well enough.  So yeah.  I've been training my pig to be a good and proper arseshanker.  He's bloody good at it too.  But I couldn't tell anyone that!  They'd think my training with the ogres was all for nothin'!
