This is probably my number one frustration when it comes to being a transgender man and dating cisgender men. I’m assumed to be a bottom because I am trans. But guess what, I’m not, and it is specifically due to being trans that I am not. My gender dysphoria interferes in my ability to even considerate it, and having bottom surgery is a privilege. Just need to give a shout out for my dad. Music is a big thing in my family. From the time I was born, I’ve been surrounded by music in some way, and my dad made a significant contribution to my love of music. He started play the guitar when he was sixteen, was in multiple bands, and in his fifties decide to go to school to be a luthier, learn to construct and repair guitars. However, I’ve never successfully learned to play an instrument even though I’ve made multiple attempts to do so. I asked him for a ukulele this year thinking it would be inexpensive and potentially an easier instrument to learn. As a luthier, my dad traded some work and this arrived yesterday. I’m som excited to see if I can actually learn to play an instrument! I had a fun adventure outside today. I have been really trying to get outside at least once a week because my mental health has been suffering from my isolation. The truth is that I barely leave my house right now. The combination of COVID, social anxiety, and overstimulation issues has been a significant deterrent for me to never want to leave my house. So, I’m a little late, but yesterday January 15th was the third annual #TransphobiaIsASin campaign, launched by @jmaseiii and @ladydanefe as a part of their development of the Black Trans Prayer Book! This day is meant to highlight the religious violence towards transgender people. So many of us have experienced religious trauma, which invalidated and continues to invalidate our gender identities by decreeing that they are a sin making us abominations. Both Christianity and Islam have persecuted gender expansive people, and continue to harm them based on unfounded views of gender as a binary construct. BIPOC trans individuals, especially trans women, are disproportionately experience violence and religion is one of the main contributing factors for why this is the case. Religion is often used as an excuse for why violence is justified. 44 transgender and nonbinary individuals we murdered due to their identity in the US in 2020 with the overwhelming majority being BIPOC trans women. In just the first fifteen day of 2021, two black trans individuals have been murdered. The only way for this to change is to advocate! One aspect of being human I’ve had to come to terms with is that the words I use to describe myself do not need to fully define me. They are generalizations about how I experience life, culturally defined by similar and shared characteristics. They are not all encompassing. People have nuance that cannot be contained within labels. Some like my race are more permanent because it combines the color of my skin and the culture I’m surrounded by. Others may change and shift as you continually evolve with time. I thought for quite a while that I had to be certain about my gender and sexual orientation. I believed that I had to choose labels the perfectly summed them up, but no words seems to fully stick. If I had to choose a world it would be queer because the truth is I’m just different. I feel the need to give a shout out to these two wonderful people in this picture. They have been two of my greatest supports throughout this pandemic and my break up at the end of August. Also, in some way, this pandemic and the queer D&D group Silas started in November is to thank for bringing us closer together. We knew each other previously, but weren’t close.
