It takes place after Dan makes a return, seeking revenge on Danny for imprisoning him. Once defeated by the young Danny Phantom a second time, Dan finds himself spending many months under the Fentons’ careful watch, mellowing out as a result. However, after learning about an old foe’s return, Dan realizes his problems are far from gone.

I keep coming back to the fact that almost no one writes Jack and Maddie as autistic. Nine times out of ten, if their obsession with ghost hunting has a cause, it's that it's a Big Scary Ghost Obsession. Never a special interest, always an Obsession or, even better, they just don't love their kids.

But both of them:

Are oblivious to many social cues and norms

Have very little volume control

Are well-known for infodumping compulsively

Are extremely trusting

And Jack specifically:

Mentions that most clothing makes him itchy

Prefers to express his feelings bluntly

Relies on scripts when struggling with social problems

While Maddie:

Has trouble reading people when she's not specifically trying

Is not a good at deception even when she tries

I'm not saying it's canon, I'm just saying that the restricted and intense nature of their interest doesn't have to be sinister in and of itself.

That spork post makes me imagine a scene where some other ghost picks up Danny by his foot, turns him intangible, and shakes him while he hangs upside down, causing all the random stuff he's stored in his body to fall out

I just realized, Canon Vlad never really found out how Danny became a halfa did he? I mean like he had to know it had something to do with the portal and with Jack and Maddie’s work, but he never found out the whole story did he?

Maybe that’s why Vlad never figured out how to properly clone Danny, among other things. I bet cash money if Vlad knew how the portal accident happened he would have been less keen on using electricity based attacks on the kid, at least at first. you know while he still had hope Danny would join him.

Danny, Sam, and Tucker are the only ones who know Danny went INTO the portal and turned it on. Later Danny probably told Jazz the story but that’s it. No one else knows who Danny because the way he is. Vlad probably thinks it was a similar explosion of Ectoplasm like him. Albeit in a higher concentration because the portal is fullsized and he’s partly correct.

Otherwise I’m pretty dang sure that Vlad would react to that information with some kind of horror. Yes his own incident was horrific and painful but Danny’s is a whole nother level. “I’m sorry did you say INSIDE the portal?! As in the stabilized rip between dimensions was opened on top of you?” I personally think that would rock his fucking world.

He’d have to put his reunion plans to ruin Jack until later right now he’s grappling with the devastating knowledge that this child was at the center point of being ripped apart as the Infinite Realms opened a doorway ontop of him.

Yes exactly you get it! I also don’t think Vlad actually died from his accident, especially since the Ectoacne came back. What most likely happened is the ailment went into remission and Vlad happened to be capable of metabolizing ectoenergy. If you look between Vlad and Danny Vlad’s skill set is much more condensed. 

My theory is that for most of his time learning his new abilities Vlad had your basic superpowers. invisibility, intangibility, flight, form shifting. its even possible his abilities weren’t very powerful for the majority of that time, enough he was able to hone them and get most of what he wanted but doesn’t develop new or such a wide range of abilities as Danny. 

Vlad’s accident was the equivalent of Peter Parker getting bite by the radioactive spider. Danny’s was akin to a literal Big Bang Event.

Hell yeah!!! Like how Danny has to work to *not* use his abilities in the beginning. Because suddenly it’s the most natural thing in the world to turn invisible or intangible, and his ghost sense isn’t something he honed or anything either, it’s just there as an instinctual reaction!

So I have been watching Danny Phantom for the first time ever with my friends and I'd kind of previously known about its reputation as a show whose fanbase dives a lot more into the lore than the show is willing to. And I guess I hadn't really understood why until now (I just finished Season 2!). Here's my sort of rambling thoughts on it.

Danny Phantom isn't a show about the horror of ghosts and the dead coexisting in the human realm. It's a show about dropping the most out of pocket lore implications you can imagine on people who in turn say things that would kill a therapist dead equally out of pocket, and then neither are addressed but the watcher has to live with the ghost of the plot that is right behind them but they can't turn around.

DP is a little hit and miss in places, but the very thing that drives people nuts about it is actually I think maybe its greatest strength: it really pulls off show, don't tell effectively. How much of that is intentional is up for debate, but the best episodes kinda leave you wondering, or sputtering like "UH, HEY, BACK UP - HEY BACK UP AND UNPACK THAT -" Is Danny's human body technically alive somehow, or is he a walking corpse? Does Danny have a door in the Ghost Zone? Were Vlad's clones feeling and sentient as they melted into ectoplasm, despite Danny's guess that they weren't? What does it say about Danny that he still erased his parents' memories after finding out they'd accept him as he is?

I think the genius of not answering these questions directly is that it's both funnier AND scarier not to. We can laugh about how fucked up it is and kinda hold our heads like "bro.... did they really just imply that, holy shiiiiiit", and that's really consistent with the emotional core of the show as this knife's-edge dance between teen comedy and horror superhero. Fully explaining the lore or being more direct about how the information is conveyed by and to the characters tips that balance and changes the show into something else, for better or for worse. And I really earnestly like it as it is, even if it's very of its time (sexism.......)! It's a really fun show with some depth to it.

Anyway, I can't wait to watch season 3! I sure hope all these wonderful qualities I like about it hold up!

All of this, and yeaaaah the sexism is… wow.

But removing that, the show’s very much got a ‘BACK UP AND UNPACK THAT’ energy, but they never do anything with it. I’m glad AGIT rectified some of it, but a lot of things remain unanswered and I kind of hope not all of the things get answered, I like the open creativity of the fanbase and the fact the shaky lore of the series keeps people from saying ‘um actually’ about things, it’s all up to interpretation.
