Allow us to introduce our debut Reverse Big Bang event!

Differently from a traditional Big Bang, in a Reverse Big Bang, the artwork is completed first. After being partnered with artists in blind claims, writers will use their chosen artwork as a fic prompt. Think of it as a fun challenge!

But just like in our Big Bang, the emphasis is the same: teamwork! After all, Glory isn’t a single-player game…

"Well, well," Shu Kexin said, leaning an arm on her sister's shoulder, "looks like even a champion team's Sharpshooter can't compare to us."

It was no worse than any typical competitive trashtalk; Liu Fei had had plenty of years to get used to it herself. But seeing them standing there like that, all smug like they'd accomplished anything, like they'd ever accomplished anything besides making more trouble for everyone around them—suddenly, her filter was off.

"At least I'm my own person," Liu Fei scoffed, shouldering her way past. She paused, then turned back, her face twisting into an ugly sneer. "Everyone knows you're worthless without each other. You're the lowest tier of pro, the pretty face weighing your team down. How about you stop giving the rest of us a bad name?"

"Cry harder, you loser!" she heard Shu Kexin shout after her, and Liu Fei rolled her eyes. Disdain meant she could keep her own frustration at bay.

Those two would learn, or they wouldn't. It would affect her own career, or it wouldn't. All she could do was keep looking out for herself.

Octopus And Squid Evolution Is Officially Stranger Than We Could Have Ever Imagined

As the next step, the team will be developing genetic models of cephalopods so they can trace how and when this RNA editing kicks in.

Just when we thought octopuses couldn’t be any weirder, it turns out that they and their cephalopod brethren evolve differently from nearly every other organism on the planet.

In a surprising twist, in April 2017 scientists discovered that octopuses, along with some squid and cuttlefish species, routinely edit their RNA (ribonucleic acid) sequences to adapt to their environment.

This is weird because that’s really not how adaptations usually happen in multicellular animals. When an organism changes in some fundamental way, it typically starts with a genetic mutation - a change to the DNA.

okay, I’m Jewish and I appreciate this sentiment. and if someone wants to cut out Sylvia Plath, go for it, I get it.

But. by this logic we’d also need to stop reblogging TS Eliot, Oscar Wilde, and Shakespeare quotes. Virginia Woolf wrote anti-semetic things in her private journals, too. If you only want to read classic poets who liked Jews and black people, that’s fine, but like. good luck? Sylvia Plath isn’t an exception.

idk. Tumblr’s attitude of “consume nothing problematic” just doesn’t work if you’re part of a group that most culture-creators over the last few centuries have hated by default. For people actually in those groups, it’s not like the only two choices are 1) worship authors who hate you or 2) completely cut the majority of literature out of your life. You learn to read critically and acknowledge flaws where you find them.

anyway, as a Jewish woman, I would much rather see a version of this post that said “please read Sylvia Plath poetry critically because she’s anti black and antisemetic” than just “stop reblogging Sylvia Plath poetry.”

The point isn’t to never consume media that isn’t ideologically pure. That’s never the point. Were that the goal, we would NEVER be able to consume any media. Nothing is ever ideologically pure, especially as time goes on and our social consciousness expands.

We should be telling people instead, “Be critical as you read this person’s work. They held bigoted views. Understand how that is reflected in their work, and be mindful of it. Be critical, be thoughtful”

Compelling others to not engage with something at ALL on ideological grounds is in the same vein as burning books. We should be compelling others to be critical and mindful, not narrow and willfully ignorant.

Continuing my series about the recent wildfires that turned our sky red. I noticed in my past posts a lot of people think this is caused by stupid gender reveal parties. Gender reveal caused 1 fire, but the other 650 fires were caused by an unprecedented dry thunderstorm.

I’ve lived in CA for over 20 years and I’ve never seen thunderstorms in August during drought season. Unlike other parts of the world, the normal climate in CA doesn’t get storms until winter. This storm is the remains of Tropical Storm Fausto which caused over 11,000 lightning strikes resulting in over 2 million acres burned, turning our sky red like the apocalypse.  

This is what climate change looks like. Not some stupid gender reveal caused by the mistakes of a few, but the collective consequences of us all failing to protect the only home we have. The least we can do is accept reality instead of living in denial. No matter how bad it is now, it will get even worse if we continue to do nothing. 

Vote and let our governments know that our future and our children’s future is worth protecting.
