I saw in one of your posts that you love historical beauty. What are your favorite historical beauty tips/recipes?
eee Thank you for asking this!! I love a chance to yap about historical beauty!! I believe I remember the post you're referencing! If I'm right, it's the one where I made a love spell inspired by a hair powder recipe found in the Tortula texts.
Here are a few historical beauty tips!
P.S. While the asker didn't mention anything about witchcraft, this is a witchcraft blog, so I will mention that many of these tips and recipes could be turned into spells with a little bit of reworking.
On Hair~
1. According to the Tortula, those with blonde hair should wear opal necklaces, as opal necklaces protect light hair.
2. For dying your hair black, try this recipe from the Tortula!
I've used this once before, just on my light brown roots, and it worked pretty well! The result is not very black, but if you'd like to darken your hair a few shades this is pretty affective
"A proven Saracen preparation. Take the rind of an extremely sweet pomegranate and grind it, and let it boil in vinegar or water*, and strain it, and to this strained substance let there be added powder of oak apples** and alum*** in a large quantity, so that it might be thick as a poultice. Wrap the hair with this, as though it were a kind of dough. Afterward, let bran be mixed with oil and let it be placed in any kind of vessel upon the fire until the bran is completely ignited****. Let her sprinkle this on the head down to the roots. Then she should wet it thoroughly and again let her wrap her head in the same above-mentioned strained liquid, and let her leave it throughout the night so that she might be the better anointed. Afterward, let her hair be washed and it will be completely black."
*When I tried this, I chose to do it in water and had good results.
**When I tried this, I left out the oak apples and still had fine results.
***Alum is safe for the hair, but only in moderation. When I used this recipe, my hair was a bit drier than usual, and I accredit this to the alum. So, use only just enough to make the mixture a bit thick and be sure to condition your hair once done.
****I only fried the bran in olive oil until the grains were nicely browned. No need to make a large fire.
3. Combs are preferred for brushing the hair
But, if you prefer a brush I personally love a boar bristle brush
On Cosmetics ~
1. Rose and lavender where two popular scents in medieval Europe
You can buy dried lavender bulbs at many grocery stores and infuse it in a bit of carrier oil to create a nice lavender scented oil that can be gently (a little goes a long way) dabbed on your wrists and under the ear to provide a soft scent.
You can do the same with rose petals to make a nice lip oil, though I recommend growing your own roses if able as many store bought roses are grown with pesticides that aren't good to be put on the lips.
2. Here's a recipe for a white face paint you can try, sans lead poisoning!
This comes from the L'ornement des Dames, a text from the 13th century! Instead of lead, it requires flour!
"There is a white make-up that is very easy to make. Put very pure wheat in water for fifteen days, then grind and blend it in the water. Strain through a cloth, and let it crystalise and evaporate. You will obtain a make-up which will be as white as snow. When you want to use it, mix it with rosewater, and spread it on your face which has first been washed with warm water. Then dry your face with a cloth."
General Advice ~
1. Warm baths were actually very popular!
Bathing was seen as a way to maintain the body's health, especially if you had a fever. They also thought it could cause intestinal blockages though, so it was also recommended to combine a warm bath with an astringent drink to help ease these side effects. Of course, in the modern era we know that warm baths don't cause intestinal blockages, but it is still nice to have a warm bath while sipping a nice dry wine or a cold glass of pomegranate juice!
2. Don't limit yourself to just one era and location!
Everyone has their own area of preference, but it really is important to branch out every now and then! Personally, I'm rather fond of medieval European history as well as the Pre-Raphaelite movement, so that's where I tend to focus. However, this world is so huge and humanity's history is so vast that there's always something to learn! Remember to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while!
3. Don't neglect modern innovations!
A human society evolves, we learn more. Back then, we used lead and other harmful ingredients. Now, we know better! We can look to the past without making the same mistakes as our ancestors.
So, use sunscreen! Put down the lead and quicklime! Remember to research any ingredients you've never used to make sure it's safe!

Gotham college student: yeah I’m majoring in psychology
Everyone else:
But listen Gotham University gets a reputation. On one hand all of their science departments are cutting edge; but on the other, because of all the supervillains their graduates have very interesting resumes.
(A yes I did do my masters thesis under Dr. Crane, only because he was the only biochemist that was doing work related to the fear receptacles of the brain. Although my research was focused more on the inhibition fear and how it could potentially help with anxiety….but you know since I’m here in front of you that I’m very good under pressure and can reverse engineer various strains of fear gas in under an hour.)
Because of this Gotham science majors are grabbed by either Gotham companies or the government exclusively. You’re basically guaranteed a job if you survive until you graduate. (Even if you do go insane in the process the rogues are always hiring).
Most employers outside of Gotham avoid business majors due to the fact that they all interned at Wayne Interprises or Batman Inc and both of those are well known for their employee benefits. (Cutting costs by cutting paychecks, over staffing, and only hiring part time does not fly with these graduates… because “do you want supervillains because that is how you get supervillains” never mind that Gotham is an outlier in supervillain creation and should not have been counted)
Art majors are pretty much the only students who graduate unscathed. They are also weirdly calm for art majors and therefore highly sought after in their fields.
Weirdly for American colleges thier sports graduates are largely forgotten in the bustle until their season comes up. Gotham college teams are always always like a sucker punch to the gut. They’re very good but everyone always somehow forgets about their existence (only metropolis is immune to this strange affect due to the Gotham/metropolis rivalry) the teams rarely make it to the finals only because of hometown related bullshit (the entire team gets dosed with joker venom before a game/the city is Nomans land again and they can’t leave for the game/ivy took over the field again and now there’s endangered flowers covering it and they can’t practice or play.)
Nursing and Pre-Med majors don’t even have to worry about college costs, as they are always given the “Dr. Thomas Wayne scholarship”, even if they never applied for it. And they receive the BEST training in Gotham University (you gotta be able to treat patients with fear toxin in their systems, or were frozen by Mr.Freeze and have hyperthermia for days afterwards, were sprayed with Joker toxin and only have minutes before dying with a hideous grin, unfortunate goons who fought with a vigilante, and basically anything Poison Ivy related.)
However, due to Gotham being well Gotham, hospitals and clinics lose their staff at a alarming rate, causing potential medical students to change their majors out of fear of well, dying in a horrible supervillain related death. So Gotham University accepts anyone and everyone into their medical programs, despite the norm being that it is next to impossible to be accepted into nursing and med programs on the first try.
Also since many supervillains have doctorates, all the certification exams have a question that asks: “I will use my doctorate to heal and protect and not become a supervillain in the near future”. It’s a true or false question.
Also since many supervillains have doctorates, all the certification exams have a question that asks: “I will use my doctorate to heal and protect and not become a supervillain in the near future”. It’s a true or false question. I love the implication that newbie college students will not lie on their certification exams.
Given that all of the doctoral Rogues still have their doctorates mentioned when addressed by their full names, this means that they were never revoked. Similarly, given the sheer number of doctors that become Rogues, odds are that there are not that many doctors in Gotham that don’t have ties to crime in some way. With that in mind, picture a PhD student in Psychology trying to present their dissertation or thesis and the panel consists of Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange, Dr. Jeremiah Arkham who might or might not be a villain that day, and the poor fool that they managed to con into working at Gotham University. Surprisingly, they all treat this with the seriousness one would expect from a committee that isn’t mostly comprised of supervillains.
hello witchblr!!
I did a candle spell for my birthday to call in love, wealth, peace, and passion for my next solar cycle. The candle had the wax melting off to the left side over the “love” part of the candle. It cascaded down like a waterfall, and created its own mini candle beside the main wick (picture 1). This mini candle started burning too! So I had two flames, until the main wick stopped and the new flame became cocooned in its creation (picture 2). It then retriggered the main flame before snuffing out (pictures 3&4).
Can anyone help me decipher what this means? :,)
✨ Tarot Numerology ✨
ONE
The Leader
Numerology Meaning:
The number 1 is about initiation, originality, and stepping out into the world with purpose. As the first step out of infinite potential (zero), 1 stands alone, symbolizing individual identity, willpower, and the courage to create. Historically, 1 is the mark of primal force—the singular essence from which everything flows. In numerology, it’s the energetic core of independence, ambition, and the spark to innovate.
Tarot Perspective:
In the Tarot’s pip cards, the Aces of each suit carry this singular, potent energy. They represent pure forms of the suit’s element—raw potential that holds all possibilities within it, waiting to be expressed. Just as 1 represents an unshaped force, each Ace is a pure idea, whether in action (Wands), emotions (Cups), intellect (Swords), or physicality (Pentacles). These Aces invite us to seize opportunities with confidence and be bold in our pursuits.
TWO
The Diplomat
Numerology Meaning:
The number 2 brings balance, harmony, and relational awareness. It’s about duality—the first reflection, the dance between two forces, and the desire for unity and partnership. Historically, 2 has symbolized the divine feminine, yin energy, and the space of receptivity. It’s a number of gentle strength, peacekeeping, and the intuitive drive to connect.
Tarot Perspective:
In the pip cards, the Twos depict the ways we connect, reflect, and balance in each element. Whether it’s a decision (Swords), a new partnership or harmony in emotions (Cups), steady progress in material pursuits (Pentacles), or a balancing act in action (Wands), the Twos reveal how we respond to relationships and decisions. Like the number 2, these cards emphasize the quiet strength in collaboration and the subtle wisdom of patience and timing.
THREE

Numerology Meaning:
The number 3 is a dynamic, expressive force of creativity and expansion. It’s the fusion of the initial two energies (1 and 2) into a creative whole, representing communication, growth, and joyful expression. Historically, 3 is connected to the principles of birth and development, a number that thrives in social and creative environments, promoting joy and fertility.
Tarot Perspective:
The Threes in the pip cards embody this energy of creation and growth. In Wands, it’s the first steps toward actualizing dreams; in Cups, it’s celebration and community; in Swords, it’s the understanding gained through pain or loss; in Pentacles, it’s teamwork and craftsmanship. These cards show how 4’s stability brings a solid base to each element, though it sometimes carries a sense of inertia, requiring a conscious effort to move forward.

5 is the number of freedom, movement, and change. It introduces the unpredictable, challenging us to adapt and expand our horizons. Historically, 5 symbolizes humanity’s sensory experiences and the drive to explore. It thrives on energy, pushing limits, and living in a space of constant discovery and sometimes disruption.
Tarot Perspective:
The Fives in the pip cards embody this restless and sometimes chaotic energy. They represent conflict (Wands), emotional hardship (Cups), mental challenges (Swords), and financial strain or material lack (Pentacles). Each Five brings tension or discomfort, urging us to confront, question, and adapt. In this way, they reflect 5’s adventurous yet unpredictable spirit, which, while challenging, drives growth and resilience.

The Nurturer
Numerology Meaning:
6 is harmony, nurturing, and responsibility. It reflects compassion, community, and a balanced home life, often associated with service and love. Historically, 6 has been seen as the number of perfection and balance, promoting healing and relationships.
Tarot Perspective:
The Sixes in the pip cards capture themes of restoration and connection. Wands shows victory and public recognition, Cups delves into nostalgia and shared memories, Swords highlights journeys and transitions, and Pentacles reveals generosity and material support. These cards express 6’s nurturing energy, reminding us to cultivate harmony, support others, and seek peace within and around us.

Tarot Perspective:
The Eights in the pip cards reveal how each element achieves mastery and balance. In Wands, it’s momentum and fast-moving energy; in Cups, it’s emotional resilience and the courage to leave behind what doesn’t serve; in Swords, it’s mental entrapment that requires strength to overcome; in Pentacles, it’s diligent, focused work. These cards embody 8’s ambitious and disciplined energy, showing how mastery demands persistence and often involves sacrifice.
NINE
The Humanitarian
Numerology Meaning:
9 represents universal love, wisdom, and completion. It carries a sense of fulfillment, reflection, and the giving back of one’s learned insights to others. Historically, 9 has been seen as the number of the elder and the humanitarian, encouraging selflessness and empathy.
Tarot Perspective:
In the pip cards, the Nines reflect both the challenges and fulfillment of completion. Wands depict resilience despite near exhaustion; Cups offer emotional satisfaction and wishes fulfilled; Swords show anxiety and worry; Pentacles celebrate material success and independence. The Nines hold 9’s humanitarian spirit, reminding us to connect deeply with our experiences, learning and growing as we prepare to move forward.
TEN
The Whole
Numerology Meaning:
10 is a number of fulfillment, closure, and the start of a new cycle. It represents both the ending and beginning, incorporating the dynamism of 1 with the boundless nature of 0. Historically, 10 has been the number of the “great wheel,” symbolizing the completion of journeys.
Tarot Perspective:
In the pip cards, the Tens express the culmination of each suit’s journey. The Wands bring the weight of success and responsibility; Cups bring emotional fulfillment within family or community; Swords depict the finality of mental strain; Pentacles reflect the legacy of material wealth and stability. Each card carries the essence of 10 as a cycle that has reached fullness, preparing for a new phase with both the wisdom and challenges of what came before.
