After years, it’s finally here. Itshou has stepped into the world. It’s still surreal to me, but right now so many people are reading our story. I’m so thankful for all the comments, the theories and the passion of the readers! Me and co-writer @alicubi​ can’t thank you enough!

Another big thank you to the Dutch Mondriaan Fund who funded an early version of this story. Without them this project would have never seen the light of day. In memory of Pieter van Oudheusden who walked alongside me and Willem as a writer on this project for sadly too short a while.

So, since I’ve never had much of a social media presence, here’s some info on me if you want to get to know me a bit <3

I basically live on chocolate, black tea and back rubs. Enjoy listening to let’s plays, OSTs and audiobooks while drawing. Hope to one day draw only quality yaoi. Have an ever expanding list of fictional crushes. Still keep a locket somewhere with a picture of me and Sonic. Have a wonderful and understanding husband who buys me Sonic merch for my birthdays. Am thankful for the continued love, patience and support of said husband, our cute toddler and our family and friends.

I live in the Netherlands and work as a freelance comic artist, animator and illustrator. Made my comic debut in 2012 with the classic adventure series Ward for Eppo magazine in the Netherlands, written by Willem Ritstier. Completed four books for the series.

Other activities: Core staff member for the Dutch lgbtquia+ convention YaYCon. Founder of / artist for the Dutch former boys’ love doujinshi circle OpenMinded. I’ve been known as Ealynn in the Dutch animeconvention scenes... ages ago XD

Hello! Been a while since I last posted here :) currently I am working on the last bits of WARD volume 3. Here is a bit I’d like to share about the process. 

When working on a page, one of the character has a breakdown and Ward tries to snap her back to reality. The shocked, locked away in her mind moment made me think of a wonderful and deeply emotional scene in Elfquest, a comic book series which has had a tremendous effect on my artstyle and drive to wanting to become a comic book artist. So when I started working on the panel I wanted to make it a tribute to it. 

I started out with trying to find the same sort of expression for Andrea as Redlance, but I ran into trouble with Ward as the placement didn’t work well enough for me (like his chin would feel sticking out really awkward or strangely cut off behind her arm). And script wise he was looking into her eyes trying to talk sense into her, so it would seem illogical to try to do that from the side instead of face to face. And also the emotional difference in the setting (Ward is losing his patience and has apparently dealt with this situation a couple of times before) had me decide for the face to face set-up, so it ended up not being much like the Elfquest panel. It was however very nice to get back into that Elfquest feeling from way back.

WARD is a classic franco-belgian styled adventure comic series that follows the Kessel family on their sailing trip around the world. After being stranded and separated on a mysterious and hostile island they receive help from a stranger called Ward, who quickly steps forward to take up the role of hero. Will he be in time to change the family’s fate on this grim island of shipwrecks? The first part of WARD is out now!

WARD is written by Willem Ritstier and drawn by Marissa Delbressine. Colors are by Shanna Paulissen. This story has previously been pre-published in Dutch comic magazine Eppo and has now been published in album form by Don Lawrence Collection. It’s available through Dutch and Belgian (comic) book stores and webshops.

Would you like to get a guest role in my and Willem Ritstier's Dutch comic book series Ward? You can! Together with Catawiki (comic book auction site) and the Flemish comic guild a charity auction is taking place this weekend! You can bid on a cameo role for the second volume of Ward - all proceeds of the charity auction go to Kika, which is a foundation for children with cancer. I'm very excited for the upcoming release of our new comic magazine Strips2Go next weekend! I could come with the publisher to the printer where our 'newspaper' would be made! Awesome to see our magazine be rushed along all kinds of rollercoasters during production. Amazing!

Aside from being a part of the publisher team, I also will have one of my comics see it's Dutch debut in this magazine. From Germany back to the country of origin :D

At the end of october my first comic book WARD will hit the shelves. <3

This was one of the cover design sketches that didn't make it. I really liked it, but it focussed a bit too much on the action and less on the exploring and adventure part of the story. It nearly made the cover though :) but the current one is really strong and sets the tone of the book very nicely. I hope to make an illustration from this sketch though at some point ^_^

Tom (the boy on the right) is being his brass, uncontrollable self again :D Oh dear.

I'm feeling nostalgic already, next week will be the concluding episode of the first WARD book in comic magazine Eppo. Together with the ending of the amazing Rhonda comic from Hans van Oudenaarden. Exciting and a little sad... and January Jones already finished in last week's edition. Luckily Golias, vol. 2 is still continuing and of course I'm excited to see the new comics that will be taking our place :D

In the bitter fight of panelling a lot of good alternatives bite the dust. The most challenging thing about drawing Ward for me is that I never seem to have enough space to set up the panels the way I want them and so I often have to compromise to get all the information from the script compressed into the page. When drawing manga (or graphic novels for that matter), artists don't have to worry so much about fitting a story into a (more or less) 46 paged limit. I feel like I have much more breathing space and can take 'time off' so to speak with less information dense panels that focus more on scenery or a feeling. I've always been terrible at making summaries and sometimes when drawing in a franco-belgian style it feels like I'm doing just that. Anyway, who knows, I may get used to it better in the future. :)

These two panels have been one of my long time favorites. With this scene I got the chance to play around with the mood using the setting and shadows to illustrate it further. It was a bit of a shame that so much of the details I put in disappeared in the shadow, but ah well... I at least know they are there ^_^;

Poor Tom... and his troubles ain't over yet. I really like how his father, Frank, has just flopped down on the bunk and fell asleep instantly.

A little while ago I was asked to draw a 2 page comic of the Erlking story set to a script by scriptwriter Frank Jonker. That in itself was a big honor and I was already familiar with the story because of a sand animation I once saw. So I got down to sketching and panelling and finally finished it today. Since it's been a while since I've last posted some of my work here, I thought I'd share some of the sketches for the characters. Enjoy ^_^

If you're not familiar with the short poem, do look it up via the wikipedia link I put in as source. It's a dark tale in which a father hurries home with his feverish child through a forest. And while he only sees willows and leaves and mist, the child sees the Erlking calling to him more and more insistantly to come join him...

A new Ward chapter in Eppo. Things are looking grim for Ward when he comes to Tom's aid. Page 24 was very demanding for both me and my colorist Shanna as it involved a lot of crowd scenes. I don't even remember how long this page took, I think we rather just want to forget about it XD

I really liked the composition here, it gives a real sense of loneliness to Ward to have him singled out there with no one of his fellow camp mates wanting to stand up for him, except the small group to the right who seem too afraid to help. I don't know if he noticed them, being fixated on Oz and the guns... it would have made him feel better to know he's isn't completely on his own.
