Critters, it's feeling like we need to have the same type of chat we had back in campaign 2, and I'm not going to hold your hand this time.
We've been here so many times before, and these things need to sink in once and for all. They are playing characters. These characters are flawed. DEEPLY flawed, even. Particularly toward the beginning of the campaign, they are NOT going to be their best selves all the time. They are going to make mistakes, they are going to do things you may not personally like, they are going to be immature, they are going to argue with each other, there is going to be tension.
THIS IS HOW CHARACTER GROWTH HAPPENS. It is in its beginning stages right now. Most of these characters are just getting to know one another, and they do not all trust one another yet. All of them are flawed. All of them have work to do, all of them have room to grow. That is the POINT of telling a character-driven story. You can't beg for complex characters and then get upset when it's not always happy rainbow sunshine time.
Also, tension between characters is not the same thing as tension between actors. You don't need to parasocially step in on any cast member's behalf. They are quite capable of handling any issues amongst themselves, as proven multiple times in the past.
Thoughtful critique is great, but that's not what some of y'all are doing. You'll have far more fun if you embrace the tension, embrace the character development, sit back, and enjoy the show instead of whining every time it's not exactly what you want it to be.
in honor of their remaking, I think we should stop calling them the Pariah Blades and start calling them the Painted Blades
Not gonna lie, I'm kinda glad Demodus called Murray out on the way she's been treating him.
Is he young and inexperienced? Yes. Is he a bit naive/too trusting? Maybe. Is he a Silly Goose? Abso-fucking-lutely.
But he is NOT a fucking idiot, and he’s a full-ass adult. If he’s a grad student, he’s minimum early twenties, maybe mid-twenties. Probably older than Occtis by at least a couple years, and not THAT much younger than Azune, Wick and Julien. Decidedly NOT a child in the way Murray's been treating him.
I especially loved Brennan highlighting how Demodus' experience as a gnome makes him KEENLY aware of how danger surrounds him every day.
He's SMALL - literally, like, in terms of game mechanics. People can and do just pick him up and move him around without even thinking about it. Average-sized people can carry him around without suffering a penalty to their movement speed, which means he's easy to just snatch. He's already been kidnapped once (that we know of).
Murray may be a dwarf, but dwarves still qualify as Medium creatures in DnD. Most people who might try to kidnap her will have to move half their movement speed while they carry her (unless they're classified as Large or bigger creatures). And, while I doubt that this is in anyway Murray's intention (she mostly focuses specifically on Demodus being young rather than small), the relative size difference contributes to a certain ableist undercurrent that runs beneath her treatment of him.
Every day, Demodus has to navigate a world full of people who could (and might) quite literally crush him under their feet. By accident or otherwise. He knows how best to navigate those challenges and how to protect himself in most circumstances. He only slipped up and got in so much trouble this time because an institution he trusted (the Penteveral) advertised a good-paying job offered by the Tachonises that turned out to be a ruse in service to a larger, more nefarious plot. And once he realized exactly what he'd gotten himself into, he split.
Remember, Demodus actually managed to evade the Tachonises entirely! The only a reason he got caught by the Crowkeepers was because he trusted Pimley (another gnome, notably, someone who should have understood and empathized with his everyday struggles) to help him. And Pimley turned around and sold him out.
Demodus knows perfectly well how much danger he's in and how to take it seriously, even if he maintains an air of levity through everything. The humor is a coping mechanism. If he doesn't laugh, he's going to cry. Better to take what joy you can, where you can find it - not just in spite of the horrors, but because of them.
He might be a bit of a clown, but he’s not an idiot, and he's not a child. He's perfectly capable of making serious, informed decisions about his life, and I'm glad he called Murray out for treating him otherwise.
I'm a little peeved that everyone keeps throwing shade at only Bolaire for "Thjazi might be working with the Sundered Houses. Thjazi's ritual might be bad." Because Bolaire isn't the one constantly coming up with these theories, Murray is. Bolaire has largely been saying "I can see it" whenever Murray throws these ideas out there.
And I get it. Bolaire is the one we know hates Thjazi and thinks the worst of him (and the one a lot of people seem to be liking less and less versus liking Murray more and more), so it's easy to say "hah!" to him and think he's the one to prove wrong. But if they wanted those slanderous theories to stop, they had to get Murray set straight. Bolaire didn't much offer up his bad opinions of Thjazi until someone said something that prompted him to add to it. Murray kept cooking on those theories.
Hell, I think Bolaire dropped at least "working with the Sundered Houses" after the Knife & Palette Paints and learning about the Cloak, seeing as the Cloak accounts for why Thjazi and the Sundered Houses were after the same things: the Cloak watches the Houses closely to try and swoop in and get those assets for themselves.
He still seems to be on questioning the ritual, but given the caution we saw with a simple de-petrifying of Cyd, I'm inclined to think at this point it's just a professional caution of unknown/unpredictable magic. Especially a ritual in a theatre and on that large scale, given Bolaire's not-dissimilar first acts/original purpose. Plus none of the PCs or people they have access to currently designed the ritual, so they don't even know for sure what the specifics of what it does are, just theories, so again, professional caution doesn't strike me as unwarranted from Bolaire.
Murray is the one who threw out, rather apropos of nothing, that Thjazi might pop back up as a god because of the ritual since that's what a Sundered House would want for themself and she thinks Thjazi was stealing one of their rituals to do before them here. Bolaire wasn't even there for that one.
So yeah, Bolaire does have misconceptions about Thjazi (likely based in his blackmail treatment), but Murray is the one pushing the theories about Thjazi acting against what the rest know of him.
the version of you from five years ago would be genuinely amazed by what you’ve handled since then. sit with that for a second
this is going around twitter rn but im also super curious: please tell me your top four comfort movies that you’re always down to watch bc my friend thinks mine are ridiculous and now we’ve realised everyone’s version of “comfort” is hilariously different

We meant it. Let's work together
This place matters, and our goal is to keep Tumblr thriving for a long time. That means Tumblr has to keep evolving. There are things we know could be better. You probably have a list too. Some of it will be easy to fix. Some won't. That's exactly why we want to work with you.
The Tumblr User Panel will be a group of people on Tumblr who'll work with us over time to give feedback on how this place works today and where it's going. We know we have to earn your trust, and we want to change how we build features and include you more in the process. We’re looking forward to shaping this together.
If you're interested in joining: https://tumblr.survey.fm/tumblr-user-panel-interest-survey
Here's what you probably want to know:
Why a panel instead of just listening to everyone?
We won’t stop reading tags, comments, reblogs, and support tickets, but a panel helps us paint a more complete picture before we build, and go deeper than a reblog thread allows.
Who are you looking for?
A mix of experience levels, devices, countries, posting habits. People who've been here a decade and people who showed up last month.
Will everyone who fills out the survey get in?
No. We're keeping it small enough to have real conversations. If you're not selected, it's because we're balancing across a lot of dimensions, not because your response wasn't good enough. We may expand or rotate members over time.
Will critical feedback affect my account?
No! We want your feedback and criticism, and that will never result in any action against your account.
Can I leave?
Whenever you want. No penalties.
Questions before filling out the survey? Leave a comment.
So Tumblr is really gonna die, and sooner than I thought
