If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

There is a difference between Greek tragedy and moral laundering.

If Alicent poisoned her own children, or killed them by her own hand after realizing what she had created, that would be horrifying, monstrous, and tragic. It would be theatre. It would be catharsis. A mother recognizing her own guilt and turning the blade on the very children she pushed into the war.

But that is not what this is.

Alicent does not take responsibility. She hands her children over to Rhaenyra on a silver platter and lets someone else do the killing, while pretending she was never part of the machine that put them there in the first place.

Season 1 Alicent knew exactly what Aegon's existence meant. She told him herself: "You are the challenge. Simply by living and breathing".

So no, this is not Greek tragedy. This is not noble sacrifice. This is selective amnesia, self-preservation, and moral outsourcing.

I don't know. I didn't see. I didn't hear. I was not involved.

It is not catharsis. It is omertà logic, the logic of denial, complicity, and clean hands:

Io non c'ero, e se c'ero dormivo ("I wasn't there. And if I was, I was asleep").

Alicent helped create the conditions that doomed her children, then tried to survive by handing them over and pretending her hands were clean.

Helaena kinda forgot that Rhaenyra’s sons bullied her little brother and cut out his eye.

She also kinda forgot her two-year-old son was decapitated in front of her (cos only Rhaenyra is allowed to be a grieving mother).

She also kinda forgot that she rides one of the largest dragons in the Dance and could have flown away on Dreamfyre instead of telling Alicent she wants to raise chickens.

As an autistic woman, I hate this representation so much. She’s infantilised so badly and it makes me want to scream. Autistic women are not children, nor are we emotionless robots or manic pixie dream girls.

If I was Aemond, I’d made her get on that fucking dragon and actually do something. Either help your family survive, or fly away to Essos where you can’t be used as a pawn - or, you know, deliver helpful prophecy nudges to the man who killed your son.

Lestat disrespecting pronouns makes complete sense. Lestat is a misogynist and has a lot of layers of unpacked racism. His scope of empathy is confined to his own identity. He will challenge homophobia and any criticisms against his identity and choices but he won't do the same for others.

Like we saw that man dismiss Louis' very valid anger at the white businessmen in Storyville. He didn't lift a finger to actually help in a meaningful way, and when Louis killed Fenwick(?), his reaction wasn't to reflect on why Louis chose him of all people to kill. He thought Louis had gotten around to killing, which is blatantly not the case. Lestat did exactly what he did with Louis; say surface level things and commentary while not behaving any differently. That is literally the root cause for why his relationship with Louis fractured.

He loves Claudia but it's the same with her too, he never saw how her race and her previous experiences as a human impacted her ability to trust and function in the world. I know the whole train interaction is being challenged as a complete lie, but something Lestat did made Claudia feel like he saw her sexual assault as trivial.

Lestat in pop culture is a queer icon, a symbol due to how much he deviated from that time's norms. But in-story he was still rather, I don't wanna say conservative but, more conforming than you'd think.

I think Cai Pingshu would have been better off with Mu Qingyan’s boring dad after all

I was so sure that the reveal would be that these two had a star crossed romance that ended in tragedy and misunderstandings but no this guy was a complete dickhead.

Also gosh this reveal is darrrrrk. Mu Qingyan’s said several episodes ago that he didn’t like his uncle but I thought he was just being petty. Like Miss Marple, he has a nose for evil.

In comparison to all these gripping character dynamics (including the coup in the Song family) it is SO obvious who the main villain is and it has been since the first ten episodes. They could have put in a bit more effort!

Oh and it’s established that he’s smart too so he’s clocked what Mu Qingyan is doing. As Shang Guan said, he’d be a formidable opponent as a sect leader.

This is hitting my crazy male lead button that so many other cdramas have failed to do. Their leads show this madness to an extent then seem to draw back but this guy just abandoned his whole sect on a wild mission to get his girlfriend to admit she wants him.

On another note, kind of disappointed that it wasn’t his dad who had a doomed romantic relationship with girl of my dreams, Cai Ping Shu. It would have made him slightly more interesting.

It’s been a while since they’ve let a male lead be this creepy and I thank whoever let this happen. He’s unhinged and the show wants to make it plain he is unhinged without sugar coating it.

I actually like this guy. He’s not made a nuisance of himself despite catching them both in compromising positions and having ambiguous feelings. He also respects Cai Zhao’s intelligence!!

And of course she does because our girl is an absolute boss. That memory of her aunt dying was utterly brutal. And so was this break up scene. Confess I rewatched it a couple of times.

Cackling over the fact she says even your more politically powerful ancestor wasn’t able to marry mine so what makes you think you can? Mu Donglie catching stray bullets beyond the grave.

the originals all look adult. So much of the remake is kids playing dress up.

Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin had insane chemistry; it was insane to such a degree that it gave their ship a huge following despite being, objectively, kind of a mess writing wise. Here, there is none between LYR and HYTT (also that forehead kiss omg. I was Team Yan Xun on my rewatch but even I melted completely there. Here...yeah whatever.) It's giving peak "Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy. No, you can't have my number, there is no maybe."

Let's talk acting. Or lack of the same. Li Yunrui acts as well as Lin Gengxin did (or at least I am not cringing watching him.) I have already ranted about ZKL's frozen model face so let's talk about HYTT. Now, Zhao Liying is a big deal but even when we compare HYTT to your average decent performance, I am going ???? because she seems to think bugging eyes means emotion.

This scene was the culmination of the entire drama in PA and the reason it worked was because we watched these characters make choices and have the world deprive them of choices, all to lead to this confrontation where love and friendship and damage and enmity merged. Here, we open with this so other than PA nostalgia, I should care...why? Maybe if it was more emotional but as is...

It's very much that whole "we got McDonalds at home" meme in drama form.

PS The main thing it's making me want to do is to rewatch Shen Li.
