when the fox hears the rabbit scream
yknow theres a lot of pressure to be successful, particularly on artsy kids whose professions are seen as useless unless theyre famous, but life is fucking hard and sometimes things dont turn out
but i think thats not bad. my dad has wanted to be a musician forever, and hes rly pretty good. but then he joined the military to get away from an abusive family, and then he got married, and then he got divorced, and a lot of horrible shit HAPPENED. he has ptsd and severe anxiety and he could never really get back on the horse. and he never made it as a musician, and now hes 53
but i grew up in a house full of instruments, and he can play all of them, and some of my earliest memories are of him playing guitar on the front porch and me thinking there wasnt a better musician in the world. so. even if you dont get to the stars, exactly, what you do isnt worthless. its not a waste of time if life is difficult and you cant make it, or if you arent famous, or if your work doesn’t influence thousands of people. it will influence someone
there are a million ways to be happy and a million ways to be a successful artist. we create what we do to enhance the human experience and relate to each other and improve ourselves. theres something to be said for just doing that,,,for the sake of doing it, yknow
This is the most comforting, warm and important piece of text I have ever read, and it is so true. No life is wasted that is spent sharing and loving.
My mother never became a professional artist. She became a social worker, then later taught emotionally disturbed children. But our home was filled with photographs of wildflowers and wildlife. Spice racks, shelves, and other useful objects were adorned with small paintings. She taught me and my sister that we could make things beautiful, even if in small ways, and let us glue glitter and fake gems on our cheap kids furniture and make it ours. Capitalism tries to say that art isn’t successful unless it makes money. But that’s not why humans make art. We make art to convey emotion. To make an object or a moment or a story OURS. And making someone smile when they hear you sing, or look at something you made for them is as valid a reason for creating as any other.
So there’s this artist, Alex Schaefer, who makes a bunch of paintings of Chase Bank burning.
There’s just
so many of these
and I think it’s incredibly funny but
I just read this bit from the artist and
This is a "plein air" painting which means I set up my easel right across the street of this Chase bank in my city and painted it like it had caught fire. The police questioned me on the spot. Three weeks later Homeland Security was knocking on the door to my home. The question they kept asking me was "Do you hate these banks?" I can honestly say yes.
And I just think this is the greatest artist statement I’ve ever read.
light was such a loser cuz he didnt just google the 100 richest people and start writing down names
how would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and find out exactly 100 of the world’s richest people died of heart attacks at exactly noon universal time. can you imagine the theories. light is absolutely a loser for not doing this
bug boys
It’s amazing how much we can see ourselves in some of the other ape species and how much they likely see of themselves in us.
everyone in the comments going “haha two apes looking at a bug...”
bitch you’re looking too
three apes looking at a bug
Banishment is the funniest punishment I can think of. Just get out of here
these two memes have equal and opposite energies
ok but how could you forget this one
god you're so right. hatred, worship, and comradery. below, above, and beside. the ultimate trifecta.
Remorse
really heartbroken about the fact that growing up as a digital native in the age of synthetic paint mixes made it impossible for me to expierience colours for the first time as an adult. the jealousy i feel when imagining a farmer ten thousand years ago seeing cobalt for the first time when stumbling over a new flower is indescribable. i despise the chromatic uneventfulness of my life
after being upset about this for an embarrassingly long time i have decided that this injustice can only be fixed by taking my time to look at all colours one at a time and think about them as if i have never seen them before. there are no flaws in this plan
7c8de6. this colour has an echo and sounds like high synths in a distance. it tastes slightly too sour to be really sweet but still contains sugar. i enjoy it a lot. but it is hard to mix without having a proper cyan at hand. 9/10
73535b. this colour is slightly cool to the touch and emits a low humming noise. it doesn’t smell like anything but tastes a bit tingly. i was apprehensive at first but now i quite like looking at it. it required more black paint than i thought. 7/10
ae1c5e. this colour is a soft pressure on the chest. it sounds like footsteps in adjacent buildings. i gasped in joy when it appeared but looking at it for longer made a melancholic. confusingly, it contains no blue. 7/10
8aae0e. despite its appearances, this colour is inedible. when touched it’s easily crushed between your fingers and leaves a wet residue. i like greens, but this one is suspicious. contains far less blue than you might think. 6/10
a60ed4. this colour crashes over you like a wave and sounds like mechanic bells. it smells slightly acidic in a way that surprisingly reminds of home. it like looking at it while blinking fast. don’t bother mixing this colour. 8/10
Hey op one question why were you tasting the paints
why does the sun rise in the morning? mind your own business man
I miss when everyone on my dash listened to Welcome to Night Vale so there’s be a good chance that on any ole day someone would reblog a quote that would grab me by the throat and forcibly ascend me to a higher plane where I understood myself and the universe better and with more kindness but also a little spook
“The past is gone, and cannot harm you anymore. And while the future is fast coming for you, it always flinches first and settles in as the gentle present” are you kidding me this quote has propelled me through at least three emotional crises
“The desert seems vast, even endless. And yet scientists tell us that somewhere, even now, there is snow.” That quote literally got me through grieving my brother like WTNV goes HARD
A List of Some of My Favorite Quotes From This Insane Podcast:
"You are beautiful when you do beautiful things."
"The present tense of regret is indecision."
"We understand so much, but the sky behind those lights-- mostly void, partially stars-- that sky reminds us we don't understand even more."
"Be proud of your place in the Cosmos. It is small and yet it is."
"Believe in yourself. You are an ancient, absent god, discussed only rarely by literary scholars. So if you don't believe, no one will."
"Death is only the end if you assume the story is about you."
“Whisper a dangerous secret to someone you care about. Now they have the power to destroy you, but they won’t. That’s what love is.”
"Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not. We never are. But that’s not the right question. The question is are we living a life that is worth the harm?"
"When we talk about teenagers, we adults often talk with an air of scorn, of expectation for disappointment. And this can make people who are presently teenagers feel very defensive. But what everyone should understand is that none of us are talking to the teenagers that exist now, but talking back to the teenager we ourselves once were – all stupid mistakes and lack of fear, and bodies that hadn’t yet begun to slump into a lasting nothing. Any teenager who exists now is incidental to the potent mix of nostalgia and shame with which we speak to our younger selves."
"We are not history yet. We are happening now. How miraculous is that?"
"Wednesday has been cancelled due to a scheduling error."
"We have nothing to fear except ourselves. We are unholy, awful people."
"A million dollars isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A basilisk."
"There's nothing under your bed. There's nothing in your closet. Nothing waits in every darkness. Nothing is the most terrifying thing of all."
"The night sky is ten miles wide, eight miles deep, and floats three miles up. Its favourite food is grape jelly. It wants to be a drummer."
"Look to the sky. You will not find answers there, but you will certainly see what everyone is screaming about."
"Ignorance might not actually be bliss, but it is certainly less work."
"And now, a special report. Crocodiles: Can they eat your children? *YES.*"
"Lie down and look up at the ceiling and breathe with those curiously fragile lungs of yours and remind yourself: Don’t worry. Don’t worry. All is as it was meant to be. It was meant to be lonely and terrifying and unfair and fleeting. Don’t worry."
"As long as I’m reminding myself things, I’m a good person, worthy of love – both from myself and others."
"Guns don't kill people! It's impossible to be killed by a gun. We are all invincible to bullets and it's a miracle!"
"Everything is exciting! Particularly existence. Existence is the most thrilling fact of all."
"There is a monster under your bed. A monster at your window. A monster any place you imagine one. You project your monsters on the world."
"You miss 100% of the bank robberies you don't commit."
"I like my coffee like I like my nights. Dark, endless, and impossible to sleep through. "
"A friendly desert community where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead while we all pretend to sleep. Welcome to Night Vale."
"And now, the weather."
I discovered this podcast at the beginning of high school, and let me tell you, it rewired my synapses.
Not only was it my first experience with positive LGBT representation, it was the show I clung to when everything else went to shit. Whatever was going on in my life, I knew I had this show in my corner, making me laugh, making me cry, making me feel okay about my place in the universe.
I owe the creators of this podcast more than I could express.
"the lights over the Arby's" is such an intrinsically queer piece of writing that it hits me *hard* every time.
i wish someone in hannibal wouldve just looked at him once during one of his little gay monologues and been like “what the fuck are you talking about”
im not even talkin about the cannibalism stuff i mean i wish when hannibal said smthing like “similar to the metamorphasis of a grape to wine you are in your own state of change, but tell me will. do you know what it is you are becoming?” it wouldve been so much funnier if will was just like “what?” and left therapy
forget everything i said previously THIS is the correct answer
We stand on the shoulders of giants
congrats lil buddy that’s the worst anyone’s ever done it
This legitimately needs to be in future literature textbooks to capture the Covid-19 Pandemic.
the best thing in the entire goddamn world is the fact that human beings have hands perfectly capable of giving amazing scritches and there are hundreds of animals out there who just love being scritched
