Anyway here is my take:

I think trying to make a movie out of The Odyssey (not the story of Odysseus, but The Odyssey as in the poem) is a bit of a doomed endeavour as the structure of The Odyssey simply does not jive with the structure of the Hollywood movie

I think you COULD make a good movie out of the odyssey but would need to engage w the fact that it's a work which veers back and forth between fantasy and realism; that it's a story told out of chronogical order; and also that it is a Trickster Hero story first and foremost. It is perhaps best done as a comedy but with the occasional shocking swerve into graphic violence.

Here are my opinions:

The Odyssey should be a musical but ☝️only some of the time. When Odysseus is narrating? Musical. Penelope and Telemachus on Ithaca? 🙅‍♀️

Odysseus can break the fourth wall during the parts where he's narrating.

Movie opens with Odysseus inside Charybdis, whirling around and around clinging to a tiny raft and screaming. *Freeze frame* yeah, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got here.

every time somebody recommends Fagles' translations to people new to classics i die a little inside. i know it's in modern language and so more accessible to a modern audience, but. look.

i can't possibly compare every translation, but look at this scene from the Odyssey of Telemachus ordering the maids to be hanged from Kline, Rieu, Wilson, and finally Fagles.

one of these is not like the others. this seems to me like somebody with clear issues with women that are colouring his translation to the extent that he's taken a line simply saying "the maids slept with the suitors" and turned it to Telemachus directing misogynistic slurs at them.

i think Fagles is fine for somebody who has already read another translation and wants to compare, but it shouldn't be the first. not when he's ad-libbing, especially when those ad-libs makes Homer's text out to be far more sexist than it really is.

so much fuss has been made over Wilson "pushing her agenda" yet nobody can tell me what her supposed agenda actually is, meanwhile nobody seems to care as much about these men putting their misogyny into their translations. is that not an agenda? is it not misrepresenting Homer to pass these slurs off as his words?

Robin Hobb is so interesting because she writes such complex female characters with such dept (even the fucking dragon had depth) but then gives them the worst shit ending you couldn't even possibly imagine

BOOK REVIEW: The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow

From the constant similes and metaphors to the internal monologues that carefully explained any possible plot nuance... when are authors going to trust their readers! I'm not stupid! Just tell me the story, don't explain it to me. Despite the decent length of this book and the amount of times the they time traveled back to the beginning of the story, every character fell flat. I didn't believe anything, let alone feel like I knew them, which is wild because they should have been deeply compelling characters whose stories wove together themes of loyalty and love, betrayal and commitment, loving and dying for your country and loving and dying for your people. I saw the potential here, but Harrow didn't trust me enough as a reader to uncover it myself, leading to, overall, an incredibly boring book.
