“hey, i don’t know you. i could have turned around and you could have bashed me over the head with your case and then i would get fired for letting you rob the club. it wouldn’t have been personal, people have needs.” he took the chance to squat to take a moment to pet and appreciate the extremely well behaved dog that she traveled with. “word travels quick, doesn’t it?” he said with a soft huff, switching his attention from her to the dog. “i’d be your new family. come home with me.” he said completely serious. standing upright to shake her head bennett shrugged. “i really don’t know how to take that but thanks. do you want a drink or something while you wait?”

“i would never. i’m a saint- just ask my brother. plus, you look like you’re rather important, i’m sure you wouldn’t get fired.” it seemed like everyone loved kai; but then again, who didn’t love a good dog? it was a good ice breaker, right? “well, he tells me everything, we’re close. i will say though,” she paused to shake his hand, arching an eyebrow curiously at his comment, “he has good taste. and what do you mean come home with me? are you trying to kidnap me and kai? i’ll scream. --- it’s a good thing, don’t worry. yeah, sure. what do you got?”

isaac eyed the dog carefully. he was never fond of animals to be honest - most of them just irritate him. “uh, right. well, i’m not sure if your brother is here yet,” he directed his vision to the girl, “but you are welcomed to wait out back for him. that is, as long as your dog doesn’t shit everywhere.” he was just finished mopping the front of the club, the last thing he wanted was a dog to shit on a freshly cleaned floor.

“out back? like near the dumpsters? what if i get mugged?” dylan’s never been in new york so she’s a bit anxious of her surroundings- what if all the movie stereotypes were true? “he’s not gonna shit anywhere. he’s very well-trained, i’ll have you know. wait, you were mopping? are you like...the janitor? do clubs even have janitors?”

calliope.

As a girl who grew up in a small, southern town, Calliope prided herself on a strong handshake. She shook Dylan’s hand with all the strength her small arm could muster and then dropped to the ground in front of the dog. She scratched behind his ears and involuntarily scrunched her nose up and smiled at him, already happier because of the animal’s presence. “Terrifying? People think that? He seems like a sweetheart to me!” she said, almost talking more to the dog than his owner. She looked back up at Dylan and nodded in response to her question. “Yup! Newly appointed cocktail waitress at your service! You said you’re with the band?”

Her mother had always told her that a firm handshake was a good thing and Dylan had always taken that to heart. Smiling down at the smaller girl, the brunette could tell that Kai was gonna become popular around the club --- hell, maybe he’d become the 801 mascot. “Most people think that Pitbulls are terrifying, evil dogs. But they’re just the sweetest things. He doesn’t do much but he’s a really darling. --- Well, I’ll be sure to hit you up when I need a drink then. Yeah, I’m the new guitarist.”

“well shit, looks like you weren’t lying. don’t worry, it was just a test to make sure you weren’t going to murder me or anything. come on in, i don’t think the band shows up for another half hour to warm up though. have you tried him at home?” bennett laughed at the beefy comment, it made the lead sound like a stew. “dylan and ashley? your parents were really progressive huh?” he said with a broad smile, extending a hand towards her. “anything he’s told you is a lie, i promise.”

“yeah, no shit. i wouldn’t murder you! i mean, i know, i look like i can kick some serious ass and i can --- but murder? even i couldn’t bring myself to kill a man in cold blood. although, i do enjoy the killings on assassin’s creed so...” dylan simply shrugged and gave the male a small nod as he led her inside, smiling politely. “yeah, he didn’t answer. can you believe that my brother and i guess your boyfriend forgot his older sister at the bus station? a travesty. i need a new family.” letting out a laugh at the mention of the names, she shrugged again and shook his hand. “well, my mom likes to tell us that she got us confused at birth but...we aren’t twins. and i came out first. i dunno man, she was a hippie. --- he hasn’t said anything bad, promise. it’s nice to finally meet you, you’re a lot better than his ex already.”

“big and famous? you’re funny.” his small chuckle was cut off by the sincere frown that had taken root on his features. “stop. you’re not going to stay in some sketchy motel. kai’s good with other dogs, right? you can stay with me and the puppies.” ash was the type of person that referred to a dog of any age as ‘puppy’. “i’ve got a spare room, so you can stay in there. besides, you only have a backpack worth of shit. you can’t live in a motel off of a backpack worth of stuff. how are you going to eat or protect yourself? new york is crazy. don’t be dumb.”

“well, it seems like it. you said you guys have an ep coming out- that sounds pretty big and famous. is it on itunes yet?” she dismissed his comment with a wave of her hand before shrugging and shifting slightly on her feet. “yeah, he’s great. he’s more of a cuddle bug than anything else. he looks menacing but he just likes to sleep. it’s why we make such a good match, isn’t that right, bud?” she cooed down towards the dog who simply looked up at her before yawning. “oh, ho, ho! au contrair, little brother. you think that i, dylan moon, badass extraordinaire, came to new york without protection?” pulling her backpack to the side, she reached into one of the pockets and pulled out a tiny pink device. she pressed a small black button the side and a loud popping sound shot out. “taser. i’ll light a bitch up. as you can see,” dylan said as she shoved the device back into her backpack, “i came prepared! but, i’m definitely down for a spare bedroom. it’ll be just like when we were kiddos!”

Calliope still wasn’t perfectly familiar with 801 yet and it was too hard to try to memorize the layout of the hazy bar at night when it was full of people, so she was doing her best to try and do it during the day. The club was still dark inside and let hardly any light in, but the synthetic bulbs all around were doing the job alright. Calliope occasionally pointed, talking to herself in her head as she tried to familiarize herself with her new workplace. An unrecognizable voice snapped her out of her study session and she turned her head to the door, where a stranger stood before her with a dog.

“I’m probably not the best person for you to run into,” Calliope started, “but I’m perfectly alright with your little dog here! Mind if I pet him? I’m Calliope, new lowly cocktail waitress of 801,” she said, sticking her hand out like she was at a parent-teacher conference meeting.

The music was loud, the lights were dim and honestly, Dylan couldn’t see a single thing. She was reminded why she hated clubs just by being in here and she was starting to regret even taking Ash up on his offer. Letting out a small sigh, she kept Kai close to her, shoving her free hand into her jacket pocket. Looking up at a blonde who’d approached her, the brunette scrunched up her nose for a second, taking her in before wearily taking the girl’s hand, shaking it lightly. “That was...a lot. I’m Dylan, nice to meet you. Also, yeah! He doesn’t bite, no worries. He just looks terrifying but...he’s an angel. --- You work here, right?”

ash stared off into space as some girl rattled on about how much she loved guys who were musically inclined. the scent of alcohol seemingly transformed her breath into tear gas. hearing a familiar voice, he perked up a bit. his eyes shifted to the bar. it was dylan. standing to his feet, he raced over to the girl, pulling his big sister (though, not so big anymore) into a tight bear hug. “you made it! i was getting worried. holy shit. i’m so stoked.” he jumped a bit, noticing the dog. “this must be kai.” the singer dropped to his knees, petting the dog excitedly. “you want to hang around for a bit or head home to unpack?”

before dylan could really get a decent grasp on her surroundings and keep asking the bartender questions, she heard rapid footsteps behind her and a pair of arms wrapping around her. her instincts screamed STRANGER DANGER and she was ready to sic kai on them but once she pulled away and realized it was ash, a sense of relief washed over her. “hey, yeah! i mean, you kinda forgot about me at the greyhound station but it’s cool. little bro’s all big and famous in new york now.” smiling down as he interacted with the dog, she shrugged and kept glancing around the hotel. “it is- sorry i brought him inside but i got scared he’d run off if i left him outside. --- uh, well...i mean, unpacking would be nice. i kind of just stuffed my entire life into a backpack. hey, do you know any cheap motels i could stay at? preferably ones that are like...on a budget. i don’t really mind making friends with cockroaches as long as the bathroom’s alright.”

cassia.

like any hormonal female, cassia’s eyes almost immediately averted to the pooch that had waddled in the door. dogs always seemed to cheer people up. they were too good for this world, and before she could even tell the female that there were no dogs allowed in the club, she was knelt down scratching the top of his head. “hmm? oh! you’re dylan. i know you,” she wrinkled her nose a bit when she realized just how creepy her words had sounded. “i mean, i know who you are. i’m friends with ash, i’ve heard a lot about you,” cassia let kai sniff her hand and then lick it, and she couldn’t help but smile. “they’re back stage, but they don’t go on for a little while. he’s sweet,” cassia stated, referring to kai.

bringing kai along to places always seemed to make people a little happier and while that wasn’t entirely her plan here, she was glad that most of the people in the club she’d encountered had been softened up by her dog. “you do?” she bit her lip and arched an eyebrow curiously before nodding at the mention of her brother. “friends, huh? you must be cassia then. he’s mentioned a tiny, pretty hispanic girl he’s friends with. i’m dylan, yeah.” she smiled and leaned down to pet kai’s head and getting eye level with the girl. “thanks! i’ve only had him for about two years- rescued him and all. also, uh, if they go on later, does that mean i should be back there with them? ash asked me to be the guitarist but i don’t know how i’m gonna do that if i don’t...know the songs. i didn’t even know they were playing tonight, maybe i’ll just sit this out.”

though bennett very rarely used the front entrance of the club, he was scheduled early to do stock and inventory. he didn’t know why one of the managers didn’t just do it since he would have to submit it to them either way, but as he attempted to slip out of the front door was greeted with a new face. he looked her over once catching sight of her 4-legged companion. “wow wow wow, he’s definitely allowed but i don’t know about you.” he said rather honestly. deciding that he need to test the validity of her story. “i didn’t know baz had a sister. what did you say your name was? i’m bennett.”

“baz? who the fuck is baz? i’m talking about ash. beefy, super chill, lead singer? if this is the wrong club, i’m gonna be super pissed.” dylan mumbled, looking around and taking in her surroundings until the male spoke up, her dark eyes glancing over at him and tilting her head slightly before narrowing her eyes. “dylan. dylan moon. ---- so, you’re bennett? the guy my brother’s been talking about? interesting.”

walking up towards the bar of the club, the brunette lugged her backpack, guitar case and tugged lightly on kai’s leash, unsure if she should even bring her pitbull into the club but ash hadn’t come to pick her up at the greyhound station. holding a folded up piece of paper in her free hand, she glanced up at the blaring sign that read 801 NIGHTCLUB in bright red neon lights before nodding to herself and shoving it back into her jacket. “hello? um, i’m here for the band. sleepwalkers, i think. anyways, my brother’s the lead singer and he told me to come here if he wasn’t home. oh, and don’t worry about kai- he’s perfectly potty trained and i have,” dylan paused, pulling out a string of tied up poop bags from her backpack, “doggie bags!”
