Someone that I know has recently been released from prison. I believe them to be innocent and wrongly convicted, however this piece won’t be discussing anything about their case or trial, but instead some interesting stories and anecdotes from the judicial system.
It’s not particularly uncommon for prisoners not to agree with being locked up and whilst the majority serve their sentence and look to be rehabilitated back into society, there are a few who still cause trouble.
In the prison that my friend was in they spoke of one prisoner who, for an unknown reason, was protesting his captivity.
To make a statement to the guards and other inmates this one particular prisoner decided to smear himself in his own faeces. The man refused to go and have a shower and stayed in this condition for a period of two or three days.
During the night time I am informed that some prisoners communicate by shouting out of the windows of their cells. This form of socialising means that guards can miss out on information being shared; however other people can of course listen in.
For this particular man he divulged information about his protest. He was aware that in the next couple of days his cell would be stormed by armoured guards and he would be taken to an isolation area within the prison, which he planned on burning down. The solitary confinement would have nothing other than a mattress in it and - with a lighter hidden in his anus - he was going to set this on fire and the rest of the prison block he was in.
When the armoured guards came to escort him from his cell they used a mattress and pinned him up against the wall. From there they grabbed him out of his holding and planned to take him to be cleaned up and put into isolation.
However, as he was being escorted away another prisoner apparently shouted, “he’s got a lighter up his ar*e and plans to burn the whole place down.”
At this moment the men carrying the sh*t protester away immediately dropped him. One guard prized his buttocks open and another gloved officer, with much force, shoved his hand into the man in order to retrieve the lighter.
Some prisoners could see through slits in their doors the ordeal whilst most, on all levels on the prison, heard the loud squeal and shriek from this unfortunate inmate.
Institutional Racism within the judicial system
One man that my friend came across appeared to be being kept in prison unlawfully.
This man, who’s name I am unsure of, was a black male who originally came from Portugal. Coming from Portugal means that he is part of the European Union (EU) and is therefore living in Britain legally.
However, after being arrested and serving time for a crime that he did commit he was not released back to society because immigration officers did not believe that he was part of Europe.
The man was questioned and when asked of his origin he responded with Portugal, the only country that he had ever called home. The officers didn’t believe him simply because of the colour of his skin and concluded that he was lying. Upon further questioning he mentioned that his family originated from Ruanda - something that officials accepted and were pleased with.
When the man came to be released he was given the relevant documentation to ‘return’ to Ruanda, a country that he had never been to in his life because he came from Portugal. The man was escorted back into prison as he didn’t want to leave Britain because he feared for his life in a country he doesn’t know and is notorious for violence.
His family all work and live in Britain too and have sent in identification that this man legally lives in the UK. His mother gave immigration officers his passport which proved that he is Portuguese yet he was still not released.
The paperwork he was sent was also sent to him in English, a language he speaks but is not fluent in. When a request for translated material was made his paperwork still came back in English.
This story was passed on directly by the Portuguese man to my friend and if true, which I believe it to be, then it’s nothing short of being disgusting.
