If you think about it…. the acronym KYS isn’t saying “kill yourself,” it’s saying Kill Your Self. Three words. As in, kill the concept of the “Self” - your consciousness’s perception that it is an individual, that it has one meaningful isolated identity that is “you,” that it is not but a droplet in the grand ocean of interconnected souls of all living beings in this universe. Instead of trying to replace an ableist and incorrect usage of intensive though (e.g "the intrusive thoughts won tonight") to mean impulsive behaviour with the term "impulsive thoughts" (which is clunky because it obviously still draws from intrusive thoughts and is similar enough for people to not notice or know the difference, is still ableist as this is also a medical term, and self-contradictory, as any impulsive thoughts are not necessarily harmful in a way that works for the meme), I suggest we start referring to it as The Impulse. Capital letters and all.

Arguments:

- draws on the popular internet slang expression of The Horrors (unspecific but commonly experienced life struggles of both psychological and material original), and is therefore not connected to the ableist misuse of instructive thoughts;

- additionally, implies the existence of universal human experience with The Impulse, in a similar way humans universally can experience The Horrors, and therefore inclusive of all;

- also implies the existence of The Impulse entity which, according to individual interpret, can be anything yet immediately relatable to other people;

- is literally just funnier than both intrusive thoughts and impulsive thoughts in that context;

- sounds ominous enough to use in ominous situations.

Example of use:

"bro let The Impulse win 💀"

"The Impulse won tonight (dyed my hair at 3 am)"

"The Impulse telling me to call my ex [insert reaction picture]"

"can't let The Impulse win this one"

You can also smack at ™ there, implying that The Impulse™ is well known enough to be trademarked and widely recognisable, which I think is cool.

you know even if a homeless person or a starving person is in that position because of their own "bad decisions" i don't care. it doesn't matter. no supposed financial misstep is enough to condemn someone to homelessness or poverty.

I remember years ago when I was still in therapy I told my therapist that I felt bad asking my friends for help because a lot of them were also going through some bad stuff and she told me

“You know, sometimes people in crisis will enjoy helping. It can be a distraction from their own problems.”

And then the next week I reached out to a friend who was in the middle of going through something about what I was going through and my therapist was right. That friend jumped at the opportunity to help.

And I’ve realized since then that my own problems rarely have anything to do with my ability to help others with theirs unless I am literally having an attack of some kind at that moment. In fact, it is actually refreshing to work on other peoples problems with them sometimes. Listening to problems you’re not soaking in constantly and helping your friend is often something you just want to do because you care about them. And you don’t stop caring about people because you’re having a hard time right now.

So I guess sometimes inviting someone into your sinking ship does work actually.

I always meant for this post to encourage people to ask for help when they need it, you know. If you’re using it as an excuse to swamp yourself with other peoples problems while never asking for help yourself then you’ve fallen into the same trap that my therapist dragged me out of.
