Chapter 14: The Cure
The ghosts of Eponine, Musichetta, Combeferre, and Marius led some Infected, both intelligent and regular, towards a bunker. It distracted at least some of them from their friends, and they managed to stay strong enough and not fade away, and have the others finish their task in the meantime. Grantaire and Enjolras went into the base in search of the king, disguising themselves as doctors to do so. R assured Enjolras that he’d follow him regardless of what happened to him because of it. They then agreed, even though he didn’t deserve it, the king would get a fair trial. When they found the king they were forced to endure a monologue, in which the king blamed Enjolras for the outbreak. During the confrontation Grantaire was shot, leaving Enjolras to hand him the detonator before he himself was executed. As his last act, Grantaire blew up the bunker, killing everyone inside.
Courfeyrac was trapped outside of the bunker, and all his friends were inside. With no other options, Courfeyrac decided to go to the wall. Along the way he was joined by Gavroche’s ghost, and they briefly debated whether or not it was a good idea to turn the fence off. Both of them decided it was worth it, and began to run towards the fence. At one point Courfeyrac remembered that he hadn’t sent the picture of Eponine’s tattoo to Combeferre, so he sent it to Joly, and then continued running. When they reached the fence, they debated the best way to go about taking it down, before finding a control panel. Courfeyrac ripped out almost all of the wires before he found the right one, and the fence shut off. An army began to come through, and when one of the officers discovered that Courfeyrac was Infected, Courfeyrac was tranquilized for everyone’s safety. As Courfeyrac fell unconscious the officer reassured Courfeyrac that they would do their best to save Courfeyrac’s friends, and France.
Jehan and Feuilly were given the horrible task of gathering the fresh human organs required for the cure - 10 bodies worth. After a firm debate, Feuilly convinced Jehan to let him commit the murders in a bid to protect the last of his friend’s sanity. The first death was the worst with the victim having time to beg for her life. After apologising repeatedly, Feuilly harvested the organs and put them in the bag Jehan carried, repeating this with the next 8 victims. When it came to the final body, Feuilly found himself unable to kill, the toll of murdering non-Infected becoming too much for him. Jehan convinced him to hand over the axe, and Jehan killed the final person. Together they collected the organs, and hurried to return to Joly and Cosette. After giving the ingredients and finding a syringe, both Jehan and Feuilly curled up in the corner of the room, trying to keep themselves together and stop themselves from falling apart. When Cosette motioned to them, they left with her and Joly, Jehan barely able to string words together and Feuilly barely able to focus. The group made their way out of the bunker, just in time to avoid being trapped inside with the explosion. The cure was swiftly administered to those Infected as they met up with Courfeyrac. It was for them, finally over.
Cosette and Joly were tasked with creating the cure itself. They made it to the correct room, but Joly felt weak, and ended up not being able to help very much. Cosette was the one to add things into the mixture as Joly read them off. Eventually, they were only in need of organs and newly infected blood. The organs, Feuilly and Prouvaire were collecting, but the blood, they had to get on their own. Luckily, or unluckily, for them, Cosette was already Infected, but Joly was not. Feuilly and Prouvaire came back with the horrible ingredient they were still lacking, which Cosette took and reluctantly added to the mix. In order to get the blood, Joly mentioned that she would have to infect him, as the blood had to be newly Infected. She didn’t want to, but she did as he said and infected him with a scratch. Cosette gave him a syringe to take his own blood, which he did after a few minutes, and she added it to the cure. It was done, but they had to get out. After gathering what they could, they began to make their way out of the bunker, but Joly found himself unable to go any further, telling Cosette to go on without him. The lark hugged him tightly and gave him Bahorel’s jacket before hesitantly leaving the bunker. Joly died in the explosion.
The Weight of the World (week 14)
Cosette only looked over her shoulder when she heard Joly against the wall. Her eyebrows furrowed in a nervous manner. Her arms were full, but she stopped and quickly moved back to his side.
“H-hey… Joly…” She quickly looked him up and down to be sure he was alright. She could tell he was suffering. Even with his new enhanced healing speed, he was in pain.
“It’s- you’re gonna be fine. We… We can figure it out when we get outside. We just can’t stay in here.” As caring as her voice was, her words held some aspect of a commanding factor.
“I swear…” She whispered under her breath. “Maybe you… Can get on my back, if you don’t feel like you can walk.” Cosette was already slumping slightly from the weight at her arms and shoulders, but she didn’t want to leave Joly in the horrible place.
“We just… Can’t let ourselves overstep our timeframe.. I’m scared that we’re closer than we think.”
He said he couldn’t go back. What did he mean by that? She wasn’t sure. So she repeated what she had said before. “We’ll figure it out. It’ll be fine. I promise.”
He was breathing quickly, his heart pounding in his ears. “I know… If we only had more time…” He forced himself to focus, swaying on his feet. He had to get her to go on, with or without him- he wasn’t sure at the moment which it would have to be. “Cosette, I can’t keep you in here. You need to- you need to go. Give them the cure. I’ll try my best to get out, I promise. But you have to go.”
He was fairly sure she wouldn’t listen, but to show his conviction to leave after her, he managed to take a few steps down the hall. It hurt, it hurt so much, but he would try. This was another promise he wasn’t intending to break. “Look. I’ll be okay. Please, please go.” He caught her eye pleadingly. “Save France, little lark. I’ll see you on the other side.”
The girl straightened her back as he spoke, shutting her eyes. She couldn’t bring herself to cry… She had already done too much of that. There were no more tears to be shed. Cosette trained her eyes on the man as he began to stumble a few feet down the corridor. She didn’t want to leave him.
She didn’t want to be responsible for someone else’s death. There was a moment of silence before she pressed her lips together to give herself a moment to think.
“God, Joly… I’m sorry… I don’t-.” She sighed deeply. “Thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done to help anyone. You’re a good soul.” The lark set down what she had grabbed in the rush and slipped off the jacket she had been wearing. Bahorel’s jacket. Cosette made her way around him and draped the jacket around his shoulders. “I’m so sorry that there wasn’t more I could do to help.” She cleared her throat and walked back around to look Joly in the eyes. “I won’t forget anything you’ve ever done for me… Or anyone else.”
It was hard for her to turn around and walk away, leaving Joly to die. She didn’t want to. But she had to. It was what he had asked her to do, and the girl honestly wasn’t in any position to say no.
Their time was almost up. She could feel it.
Cosette grabbed what she had and gave Joly one last thankful smile before walking down the hallway, hoping that he wouldn’t die sadly.
But she had to get out. That was exactly what she did. Finding the exit, Cosette emerged through the way and drew in a sharp breath of outside air.
It was done.
Joly watched her go, pulling the jacket tighter around his shoulders, and then managed to stagger around a corner to watch Jehan and Feuilly pass as well. They would be safe too. He resolved to stay standing, and to fight the infection for as long as he could. If he were going to die, he didn't want to go like that.
A couple of employees passed him, and he yelled in a hoarse voice, "Run! Run now! Get out of here! Get away!" If they escaped, they would probably be taken into custody, and whatever happened they would have a chance. But they looked at him, startled, and continued on their way.
Taking a deep breath, he set his back solidly against the wall. He could feel the thrill coming again, rushing through him, and it didn't take long before it reached his head. He could do something, he could go find the King and kill him, he could follow those employees and warn them- or tear them to-
He shut his eyes tightly and pinched his arms. No. He couldn't give in, not now. If he were going to use this infection, it would have to be for something good. Something worthwhile.
His eyes flew open. He didn't know about any of the other people in the building, but he knew two who didn't deserve to die here. Slowly, he began walking deeper into the building, looking for Sector Three. One more good act before he fell. One more hope for redemption.
There it was. The small sign filled him with a desperate, wild joy. Maybe he could pull through. Maybe he could save them and himself. He took a deep breath, inhaling the smell of the jacket. He would be strong like every one of them. He was so proud to know them, to have lived with them and run with them and helped whenever he could. He reached out and grasped the thick door handle-
The floor shook and he lost his grip, tumbling to the floor. He was too late. Of course he was too late. Too slow. He rolled carefully to his hands and knees, head low. His eyes burned, jaw clenching with anger. Of course. "FUCK!" His voice rang to the ceiling, but was almost immediately drowned out by a rumbling sound. The building shook again, but he didn't move. He was strong. If this was the end of him, at least he would go fighting, whatever way he could.
Suddenly, he looked up. Surely someone would be there to meet him. The ghosts, and maybe even- did he dare hope-
The explosion ripped the walls apart, the world simultaneously collapsing in and bursting out. It was over.

He flinched slightly when she hugged him and jerked at the voice in his ear, but his grin only widened. “Yes. We did it. I did it.” He looked up at the ceiling and cried, as loud as he could, “Look, love! I made it! I kept my promise! I did it for you!” He laughed wildly, feeling the pain in his head intensify.
But for a moment, the adrenaline haze cleared a bit and he remembered. “Take it, Cosette. Give it to them. First, before everyone else. You deserve it.” I
In that next second, he felt a burning hatred for those other people, the ones who had done nothing. Who had attacked him and killed his friends. And even more for Enjolras and Grantaire, even for Gavroche and Combeferre and Eponine and Marius and even his own Musichetta for never having to feel this pain, of knowing that you were going to lose your mind but not when.
And then it occurred to him that he might have already.
He looked at Cosette, feeling as if he were slamming back to the ground from a great height. His body hurt all over and he was hot, burning hot. He wrapped his arms tighter around her. “Oh god I’m so scared Cosette please help me…”
The sound of his cries made her ears hurt and her head spin. But she let him shout anyways, since she could imagine herself doing the same.
When he told her to take the cure, she shook her head. “I’ll take it when we get out of here. We’re almond tour of time.” Cosette’s words were hurried. She rushed over to the machine and grabbed what she could before taking a deep breath. Joly was scared.
But there wasn’t anything she could do about it. The girl paused and met his eyes, offering a gentle smile. “Hey. It’ll be fine. I promise.”
that was a lie. She didn’t know if it would be fine, so there was no point in promising.
“We just need to get out of here… And then we can figure out what to do next.” Beckoning the others to follow, Cosette headed towards the door.
The moment he had sat down, it was as if his senses had witched off. Any remaining adrenaline had left him in a sudden rush and the shock had settled in. He wasn’t aware if the others said anything. The only thing he could vaguely be aware of was Jehan’s presence, his shoulder pressing lightly against him as the only point of contact.
It was as he saw Cosette’s motioning that his mind started to focus again. He unsteadily looked up, squinting to make his eyes focus as well and take in the surroundings. It looked like what ever they needed to do was done.
The cure was complete.
Turning, he gently moved to grip Jehan’s arm, the blood dry now so not leaving a print on his shirt. “Jehan… It’s time to go… Just take my hand okay? Hold tight, we’ll be okay… I’ll protect you” He whispered softly, hoping to get his friend moving enough to help get him out of there with Cosette and Joly. What happened had done a number on them both. He only hoped it was something that could eventually be fixed.
Jehan feels empty. He’s not paying attention he can pay attention. He’s in a blurr of everything. The only thing in his mind is that man. His head rolling away. The memory of the first girl. Screaming.
He feels there pain and he feels nothing. He doesn’t feel Feuilly shift. He can barely hear his words. Somehow he’s able to respond to the hand on his arm.
He understands, just a little what Feuilly is saying. He grabs his hand and nods.
“Okay.… you’ll protect me.” He repeats. Spitting the words back because no others come to him. Maybe a part of him knows it true. But he just holds onto Feuillys hand. For now he’s unsure of everything else.
Joly did his best to get his legs under himself and stand, leaning heavily on the wall. His breath hissed out through his teeth, but he managed to stay upright through the head rush and start across the room after Cosette, putting as much weight on the tables as he could.
Feuilly and Jehan were in the corner. He gave them a sympathetic look before pushing himself out the door, keeping close to the wall as he stumbled along. Oh, he must look like a mess, but he was feeling better than he had in- well, as long as he felt like he could remember. He wasn't afraid, he wasn't exhausted- he was so very alive. He couldn't stop smiling.
Abruptly, he swayed on his feet and stopped walking, flattening his back to the wall. Once again, the feeling faded. What was he doing? He was happy, when his friends and his lovers were dead. Jehan and Feuilly had been forced to do unspeakable things, and so had everyone else. No matter what they did from here, that wouldn't go away.
And what had he done? He was hardly guiltless, either.
"Cosette." His voice was weak, all his energy gone. "Cosette I can't do this anymore. I can't go back."

Cosette could tell that Joly was feeling the infection. And the idea felt too familiar to her. It felt too familiar to her whether she wanted it to or not.
Her eyes stayed on the phone as she tried to make out numbers or letters. When she had a small idea, she searched for an input area. “Ah!” Cosette nearly jumped in triumph as she found the right spot. Quickly, the girl punched in the code that she had been able to decipher. The machine clicked and buzzed before stopping.
Had they done it? Oh god, she hoped so.
They had. The machine had produced the cure. Cosette turned to Joly and walked over, pulling him into her arms and hugging him gently. “Oh my god. Oh my god. You did it, Joly.” Tears were evident in her voice, which wavered violently.
“I’m so sorry about everything that’s happened. And I’m sorry about- about this.” Her words were quiet as she whispered in his ear.

Cosette’s eyes widened at his words. He was scared, but there was a hint of determination that she could hear.
Why can’t you bring yourself to do one small thing for France? Just get it over with. It won’t take long. You’ll either feel fine afterwards. Or you’ll feel worse.
Careful to not cry again, the girl took his arm in her shaky hands, which were also sweaty. “Oh my god I’m sorry. Joly I’m so so sorry.” She cried before doing as he told her, and scratching him. It was enough to break the skin and make him bleed.
As soon as she opened her eyes and saw the marks that she had made, she felt lightheaded. The girl quickly scooted away from him and brought her hands up, covering her ears. “I can’t believe I just did that. Joly oh oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.” Cosette’s shoulders shook as she finally began to sob once again.
She had infected Joly. Just like she had been the cause of Bossuet’s infection.
Joly took a slow, shaky breath, sitting up a little straighter. That was it. His arm burned slightly where she’d scratched it, but given the location, it would probably be at least a little time before he started feeling any effects at all.
He was still so lightheaded, and a roaring sound was blotting out his hearing. He blinked quickly and swallowed a few times, trying to get it to go away. He had somewhat hoped that the infection would kick in and start healing him right away, but clearly that wasn’t going to happen. He couldn’t escape his fate that easily. For every thing he gained, he would have to lose another.
“O-okay. The organs now. Just- just put them in- a-and I think there’s one more step. A code? I don’t know, the tattoos. I- I don’t really know what they’re for, but apparently we- need them? And then- blood.” He could see the syringe on the table over him, reflecting the overhead lights. “Almost there, Cosette, and we’ll save all of you. Almost there.”
She couldn’t believe that she had scratched him. She had infected him. Oh god. It was her fault. Cosette’s head shot up and she glanced towards the machine, stumbling to her feet and walking over. The girl swallowed hard and picked up the bag, which smelled absolutely rancid.
One glance at the organs and she didn’t feel well. She felt a tickle in the back of her throat and quickly moved to the other side of the room to where she could lose what little she had eaten in peace.
When she finished up, Cosette staggered back over and began putting the organs into the machine whilst holding her breath. As soon as they were all in, she turned back to Joly and nodded “Code…? Blood.” The girl unpackaged the syringe and handed it to Joly, in case he wanted to do it himself.
“I’m sorry, Joly.” She choked out.
Joly held out his phone in return, having had just finished texting Courfeyrac. His eyes burned. “He sent the picture. And… Cosette I’m scared for him I’m so scared we can’t lose him too-”
He stopped himself, biting on his lip, and took the syringe. It would be hard to do this himself, but he wasn’t going to make her do it too- if he could manage, infecting him would be the last troubling thing she ever had to do. As carefully as he could, he positioned it and took the blood, from the same arm she had scratched him on. When it was full, he removed it and pressed the hem of his shirt to the wound, figuring it wasn’t going to hurt him any more. Carefully, he placed the syringe on the table and took a long breath. The light of the room was too much, and he was getting a headache on top of the dizziness. His heart was pounding.
“I’m done. Almost there. ‘m not sure what to do with the picture but- you could ask Feuilly, or look around. Quick, though.” He leaned back against the wall and shut his eyes.
She glanced down to him when he mentioned the picture, nodding at the phone and gently taking it between her fingers. “okay… I know. It’s gonna be… fine.” Right? Wasn’t it? She prayed that it would be.
Cosette’s eyes moved hesitantly to him as soon as he began to draw his own blood, and she took the syringe. “Thanks. I’m sorry about all of this.” She whispered hoarsely.
The loud noises filled her head again as soon as she returned her attention to the machine. Carefully, she added the blood into the horrible mixture and quickly searched around for a place to plug in the code.
They were so close. They couldn’t give up now.
"Not your fault." His head was buzzing, and it was all he could manage.
He was swaying lightly, forward and backward, and he imagined he could feel the medicine running through his veins, slowly working its way into every part of his body. He wasn't certain what all the elements that affected the time before turning were, but he was fairly sure increased heart rate wouldn't slow it down. He probably didn't have long.
He was too alert now to be afraid, at least in the way of the mind-numbing terror that had been haunting him. His mind was wild and alive, and his skin seemed to be tingling with sensation. He was warm, and he hadn't realized that he'd barely felt that way since they entered the mountains. His muscles were relaxing, and he knew that if he wanted, he could move again- stand, even, but he also knew he wouldn't do it. He was still wounded, this was clear, but maybe it would heal. He could walk on his own. The thought was thrilling.
He looked up at Cosette and felt intensely, aggressively proud. She had done everything he asked. And Jehan and Feuilly, in the corner, had done the same. He was so proud of them, and there was barely room to be sad.
"Well, once we find the code we've done it. We've succeeded. We reversed the disaster, the crisis. We saved France." He smiled, and it felt foreign on his face.

The Weight of the World (week 14)
Cosette’s eyes widened at his words. He was scared, but there was a hint of determination that she could hear.
Why can’t you bring yourself to do one small thing for France? Just get it over with. It won’t take long. You’ll either feel fine afterwards. Or you’ll feel worse.
Careful to not cry again, the girl took his arm in her shaky hands, which were also sweaty. “Oh my god I’m sorry. Joly I’m so so sorry.” She cried before doing as he told her, and scratching him. It was enough to break the skin and make him bleed.
As soon as she opened her eyes and saw the marks that she had made, she felt lightheaded. The girl quickly scooted away from him and brought her hands up, covering her ears. “I can’t believe I just did that. Joly oh oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.” Cosette’s shoulders shook as she finally began to sob once again.
She had infected Joly. Just like she had been the cause of Bossuet’s infection.
Joly took a slow, shaky breath, sitting up a little straighter. That was it. His arm burned slightly where she’d scratched it, but given the location, it would probably be at least a little time before he started feeling any effects at all.
He was still so lightheaded, and a roaring sound was blotting out his hearing. He blinked quickly and swallowed a few times, trying to get it to go away. He had somewhat hoped that the infection would kick in and start healing him right away, but clearly that wasn’t going to happen. He couldn’t escape his fate that easily. For every thing he gained, he would have to lose another.
“O-okay. The organs now. Just- just put them in- a-and I think there’s one more step. A code? I don’t know, the tattoos. I- I don’t really know what they’re for, but apparently we- need them? And then- blood.” He could see the syringe on the table over him, reflecting the overhead lights. “Almost there, Cosette, and we'll save all of you. Almost there.”

Normally, Cosette would have fought and fought against him wanting to become infected. But at this point, she had no more reason to want her way that he did for his.
“Okay….” She opened her mouth to protest again, but then remembered that she had agreed to him. “Okay. If we could find a needle…” The tears were coming back to her eyes. “We could- we could-” Why was she crying all over again? Was it just the thought of it?
She knew why. It was because Cosette had already gotten Bossuet infected. Both of their infections would be her fault after this.
The girl swallowed a lump in her throat, only making it more painful than before.
She’d never forgive herself for this.
“Cosette.” His voice cracked and he cleared it weakly. “I swear to God it’s not your fault and won’t ever be, I asked you to and I won’t let anyone tell you it was wrong. It’s my choice, and thank you for letting me make it.”
He closed his eyes for a long moment. His head was still spinning. “They should finish soon. Do you want to find the syringe now or ask one of them to?”
Jehan walks into the room shaking. Feuilly close behind him. The blood is starting to dry on his arms and llegs and basically everywhere. “We got- We um.. have the organs you needed.” His voice is quiet and horse.
Jehan looks away as he hands them the bag. Not sure what to do, he sits in a chair on the other side of the room away from them. He feels himself break. He’s quiet as he sobs, not wanting to alert them or Feuilly. Were almost there. France is Almost Saved. That’s what counts Jehan. Keep it together.
Cosette felt the size of the room shrink as the others entered. Prouvaire and Feuilly had returned with the horrible ingredient. Climbing to her feet, the girl walked over and gently took the bag, holding her breath and looking away. It smelled awful. “Thanks…” Her words were quiet as she glanced over her shoulder towards Joly.
Cosette moved over and set the bag on the table, staring at the machine. “Yeah… Hey, Feuilly, Jehan? Would you two look around for- for a syringe?” She asked, voice obviously reluctant. But when she looked back over to them, she spotted Jean in the corner. It made her heart snap in two.
Joly breathed slowly through his mouth, forcing himself to sit up again. “Check the cabinets. And Cosette… Are you ready?” His voice was low, and as calm as he could make it. This was it, and they had to make sure all of their sacrifices weren’t in vain.
“Do- it, and then put the organs in, and then get the blood. I don’t know if we should give it some time to spread. Are you going to- to scratch me? Or- how?” His voice shook a little. For all the preparation, for all the time he’d known it was coming, he was still absolutely terrified. “It’s your choice.”
Feuilly was relieved that Jehan had taken the bag. His stomach felt like he was rolling on a ship in the middle of a massive storm and nothing could settle. He kept shaking as the shock of what they had done finally began to settle over him like a suffocating blanket - now that the adrenaline was washing away.
Looking up at Cosette’s request, he shuddered a little before nodding, starting to rummage around for something that could pass as a syringe. Anything. He didn’t ask for Jehan to help. His friend was struggling enough as it was.
Pushing aside boxes and opening drawers, he froze before finally picking out a syringe. Still in a packet, still sanitized. One stroke of luck in this hell hole.
Turning back he moved to place it on the table beside Cosette and Joly, unable to summon words from his fog-filled mind. Slowly he made his way over to Jehan, sinking down to sit beside his friend and gently rest his shoulder against the other’s. He couldn’t speak, and couldn’t hug the other, his arms didn’t seem to want to move. But he could be there, a silent presence. A silent way of saying ‘I understand man… I get it… I’m here for you’.
They were both broken now. But perhaps with time, they could be fixed.
The girl sent a small, saddened smile towards Feuilly when he set the syringe down. There was no need for a thanks, especially because of what the needle would be used for. Her eyes moved to where Feuilly, too, had gone. But she forced her attention back to the machine.
Joly’s question stayed in her head for longer than it should have. Cosette hadn’t thought about how she would infect him. So, rather than walking over to him immediately, she just stood there, staring blankly at the wall. Would she be able to bring herself to do it? She had to.
Slowly and reluctantly, the girl crouched down beside Joly, staring him in the eyes. “I- don’t know of any other ways.” Her hands shook as she tucked some hair behind her ear. They shook more than before. In fact, her entire body was shivering.
For a moment, Cosette stayed silent, and set her head in her hands, unable to believe what she was doing.
Joly was shaking, but he didn't pay attention. It had to happen now. "C-Cosette, please. One scratch and it's over. I know you'll never forget but I don't blame you and I don't want you to blame yourself. Please."
All of his muscles were tensed, and he stopped talking to focus on releasing them. Carefully, he raised his arm and held it in front of Cosette, again ignoring how it shook. "I won't feel it."
His thoughts, left unattended, were panicked and jumpy. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...
