a lot of things like this are also designed to be “artsy”. if you see weird abstract chairs or futuristic styles of subway benches or statues / boulders in little alcoves, a lot of it is intentional to keep people from being able to sit comfortably or lay down in that space. ex:

things you can do (and by do I mean put the stuff there/disassemble it and then leave):

other things you can do:

Leave lots of cardboard and newspapers underneath benches with something heavy on top so they don’t blow away

if you see a discarded mattress move it under a shelter (if there is none prop it up against a wall) so it doesn’t get rained on

if you have spare blankets/pillows shove them under benches or in other areas where you’ve seen people sleeping

do the same with clothes

ball up a bunch of socks put them in a clear ziplock back or sandwich bag + push all the air out so it’s waterproof, leave them somewhere people would find or offer them to people. sleep socks are especially great
