I know saying this is beating a dead horse but it really is fucking sick that our species clearly evolved to engage in intensive physical activity and social interaction during its adolescence, yet we’ve built half our society around forcing our children to sit still and quiet while they obey a long list arbitrary rules created solely to test their conformity in basically a softcore prison for most of every year of their lives, even dumping extra work on them to take home and stress over during the short window they could otherwise spend with their families or the things that make them at all happy. And then we wonder why virtually every single adult in this society is an ill-adjusted wreck to some degree or another and can barely even agree on the definitions of “true” and “false” let alone right from wrong.

What do you think is the issue with the chemical imbalance theory?

the idea that mental illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain 1) ignores how the idea of “mental illness” (& therefore, in contrast, the existence of a “normative,” healthy brain) is constructed by empire and capital; 2) ignores how, while everything in the brain is neurologically instantiated, that neurology doesn’t say anything about causation (i.e. sure, low seratonin levels correspond with depressed mood, but what causes lower seratonin levels can’t just be chalked up to some kind of genetic or biological freak; and 3), relatedly, ignores how capitalism itself creates & reinforces ideas and standards of living that cause mental suffering

basically, the idea of “mental illness” as we understand it in the West / under capitalism is constructed and not inherent; the categories & boundaries of specific mental illnesses are similarly constructed in ways that serve the interests of capital and empire (bc people who can’t work are parsed as non-normative, & “recovery” is centred around people being able to work); and the conditions of capital and empire, in turn, create some of the mental suffering that capital parses as “mental illness.” the biomedical view of mental illness as chemical imbalance is also something constructed by capital in order to normalise (and therefore depoliticise) all of this

I think that mental illnesses exist in a cultural context and psychology differs pretty heavily from experimentally rigorous science.

The one thing that does make me think of mental illness as a chemical imbalance is that a person can have, as a side effect of medication, symptoms that pretty much exactly a mental illness that the person didn’t have before.

So while I think my depression is not simply a state of imbalance of neurochemicals, another person might take a medicine that lowers their ability to register dopamine and then start having thoughts and symptoms eerily similar to accounts of depression, or of other conditions.

Since I tend to get into this with people who argue that robots will replace minimum wage workers if they get too expensive, I like to lean into the robot metaphor.

If you have a machine performing a valuable talk for your company, the upkeep of that machine is part of your operating cost. You have to pay to power it, to upgrade it, to fix it when it breaks. And if you can’t afford the machine, the manufacturer doesn’t have to do business with you. They’re free to take their service somewhere else where they think the price is fair.

For humans, a living wage is the operating cost. If you can’t afford to pay your worker enough to live nearby, feed themselves, and get basic health care - all of which are things they need in order to be able to work for you - you’re failing to pay for the cost of their service. 

The difference is that humans have to eat, like, all the time, so they often don’t have the option of taking their business somewhere else if the price isn’t fair - even insufficient food and shelter is better then starving on the street. But that means those people are not really able to act as agents in a free market, and it’s easy to exploit them under the guise of “the market setting the price.” People can’t act like reasonable economic agents when they’re desperate. As for as I can tell, that’s the whole point of having a minimum wage.
