So in Chapter 1 we had Top Chef, who is a spinning top and also cartoon Italian, who makes a 'Top Cake' for Clover's birthday, which you can either keep or turn in to be rewarded with 'SpinCake'. the cakes are just coherently tied to Topchef being a spinning top toy. ok

Chapter 5, as part of its "Chapter 1 nostalgia" aspect, has Hopschef, who is a hops flower (used to make beer) who hops and is also cartoon German, despite being in a Japan-themed dark world. Hopschef makes sourdough. when the party destroys the sourdough, Ralsei is able to heal it, which somehow turns into "TreeCake." why.

The TreeCake is a Baumkuchen, or tree-ring cake. Baumkuchen is a German variety of spit cake, but it has no special ceremonial significance in Germany itself, from what I understand. In Japan, however, Baumkuchen has become associated with weddings, as a gift for wedding guests.

Japanese fandom lingo for a seemingly endgame ship being broken up last minute by a different romantic pairing (バウムクーヘンエンド) references baumkuchen's role as cake served at weddings. the idea is that the person left single is stuck eating baumkuchen as a guest to the wedding between their former partner and somebody else. theres a vocaloid song about this

thinking about chapter 2 weird route again.

berdly is like, incredibly abrasive right? frankly comedic levels of abrasive, especially to certain kinds of players. that’s his role in the story, to be a little shithead who’s so pathetic it’s funny. a walking punchline. but really, like queen said, there’s nothing wrong with him, at least nothing that it isn’t normal for a teenager to have “wrong” about them. he’s just annoying.

but being annoying is one of the most dangerous things a fictional character can be.

so many times i’ve watched someone play chapter 2 and very quickly wonder out loud, semi-jokingly, if they can kill berdly, usually not long after he’s introduced in the dark world, often going as far to say they would be willing to abandon the pacifist route to do so.

so the chapter 2 weird route’s climax is, essentially, the game calling that bluff. really? you really wanna do that? okay. here’s who you wanted to kill. a normal ass teenager who stops fucking around and cuts the smartboy bullshit the moment he realizes his best friend is in Actual Real Fucking Danger and immediately rushes to help her. this is who he is when he’s in a position where you can kill him. not an annoying cartoon character. is that satisfying? is it worth it?
