Welcome to my tumblr!

This is a completely chaotic collection of all I find beautiful, interesting, or valuable, and a good deal of fangirling over (you guessed it!) old-fashioned books.

I know how to use the queue/schedule functions but I prefer to flood my feed every morning without the fear of my followers before my eyes. But I do tag everything, so you can block specific ones if you like. (See here for a list of all my tags!)

Writers have two modes and they are "i haven't written in three weeks and i am rotting from the inside and everything feels wrong and i don't know who i am anymore" and "i wrote for four hours straight and forgot to eat and it's dark outside and when did that happen and i feel like a god" and there is nothing in between. no chill. no medium setting. just famine or feast and a very confused nervous system.

I was talking about Sherlock Holmes with my cool weird 42 year old coworker the other day and he said that he had read other works by ACD but not any Sherlock Holmes. ACD is smiling down from heaven on his one and only true fan.

Norman Rockwell - Homecoming Marine

Was looking through some WWII-era paintings to try and get myself into the vibe when I came across this Rockwell painting, which I absolutely love. Somehow, though the subject is very much like The Pacific (he’s even a First Marine), the feeling in this painting is different.

This Marine comes back to his old job and looks at the other men with a profoundly deep expression, even though we can’t even see his entire face. He has war memorabilia, but it’s not the center of the painting. The focal point is him, the war-worn soldier.

Rockwell paintings have endless detail and so much emotion.

Description of a skunk written by a Jesuit Missionary, published 1634 (via Wikipedia):

The [skunk] is a low animal, about the size of a little dog or cat. I mention it here, not on account of its excellence, but to make of it a symbol of sin. I have seen three or four of them. It has black fur, quite beautiful and shining; and has upon its back two perfectly white stripes, which join near the neck and tail, making an oval that adds greatly to their grace. The tail is bushy and well furnished with hair, like the tail of a Fox; it carries it curled back like that of a Squirrel. you know how when you go to a concert or show of some sort and the person on stage is like “HOW’S EVERYONE DOING TONIGHT?!?!?!?!” and the audience cheers back? why? you’re not answering the question, you’re just yelling. imagine if we did that in daily conversation. “hey jeff, how are ya?” and jeff just starts screaming and clapping in your face
