Otto Octavius and Norman Osborn should tear each other apart for my amusement
The Archie comic book characters became serious fashion icons, but it all happened through a series of accidents. For images, links
Really fun overview on how the comic coincided with recent-ish history like the development of the "teenager" category, gender roles, and Comics Code censorship.
readcomicsonline getting nuked is bad for all the obvious reasons but also its insane considering those artists/writers confessions that they get sent pages with the readcomicsonline banner at the bottom bc dc and marvel dont have any kind of internal reference or register for most shit. shooting themselves in the dick
Wow! Amazing how clearly--in print quality and text styling--this was published in the 1910s, yet the character's style of dress feels so iconically 1960s. I wonder what clothes and hairstyles were supposed to be represented here?
This fascinated me too !! She would occasionally be depicted in more contemporary fashion and/or comment on clothes, and from what I found it seems like Mary is just supposed to be wearing an old, shabby dress that doesn’t fit her anymore and the extremely high hem is just part of the comic’s distinctive art style
Here’s an awesome one I found where she jokingly disparages the “slit skirts” that were trendy for women at the time and showed off the ankles in favor of just continuing to show full leg LOL
And this one where she dresses in drag to do feminist voter fraud which I just think is neat

there's a universe out there where norman osborn is a successful wicked witch-themed drag performer. notably harry still has all the same issues though.
"dc is darker" "marvel has more fantasy" "dc is mystery and marvel is sci fi - " all of you are wrong. dc comics is when a man has black hair and blue eyes. marvel comics is when a man has blonde hair and blue eyes.
There's a thing 1950s comics do sometimes where the villain is drawn much more realistically than the hero. This is of course because the villain is often an ethnic caricature, and you need more detail to be properly bigoted, but it's not always the ones you'd expect. I've bumped into more than one example where the hero's Adventures of Tintin looking ass ends up fighting a grotesquely hyperreal Irishman.

The second best way to enjoy a superhero adaptation is to be just familiar enough with the source material that you understand the characters and themes being referenced but not so familiar that you spend the entire time fuming about all of the stupid unnecessary changes. The best way to enjoy a superhero adaptation is to be ten years old.
