A gift
I received books as gift for private and professional reasons. I guess, generally people I know would assume I love books; interesting book to look at occasionally, important book to read because its content, or beautiful book to be proud of or to stay hip and trendy (I know, shallow! But itās true!!). I can completely stay away from buying books in a year but will still have so many unread books on my desk at home and at my office because I got books for free from everyone (well, almost!)
That being said, I must also admit, it could took me a while to open a gift and see whatās actually inside. I know itās a book, but I just donāt have the time yet to read it, so I let it in its beautiful package for weeks, months or even worse, years!
This is the case with a book given to me from my German teacher, mmm..I guess 7 years ago? (Iām such a bad person!) It was kind a reward for me for being the best student or something like that. I just opened the gift today. Oh, I went silent.
The book called āBilderbriefeā or letters with pictures. It is about letters and postcards from some German intellectuals and artists sent to their friends or colleagues. I havenāt read the book yet, obviously, but I will. It is a beautiful gift, it struck a chord in my mind and in my heart. Iām such a romantic letters lovers, I love writing with my hand to the people I care about and respect (maybe not so much illustrations), I love sending and receiving postcards and any kind of personal cards. The book is just part of me.
Itās such a shame for me to wait until 7 years for discovering this. I seriously feel guilty. And even worse to realize how this wonderful gift came from a teacher that I thought was not that close to me to know who I am or what I love. I said thank you without knowing what I receivedā¦
I always think the best gift will come from a sincere heart. To give a meaningful gift you must have kindness and attention for the recipient. Iām forever grateful that one of my teachers had indeed given me that.

Jakarta...Car-Free Day So what does the ever popular Jakarta Car-Free Day symbolize? Well fun, clearly. So why don't you start talking with your loved ones about plans for this Sunday?
Jakarta⦠Arjuna Cafe and Photo Studio Anything about looking-good-on-pictures-online is a serious thing for many Jakartans, myself included (well, with a bit of snobbery, I guess). That being said, an ideal spot to hang out for Jakartans must not only be good at what they are actually offering (foods, drinks, shopping experience etc), but it must be also nice-to-capture-and-brag about. So there we were, on one warm and not so special Sunday, I and a very dear friend of mine decided to see a relatively new spot for ātaking picturesā Arjuna Cafe & Photo Studio. Located in an area densely populated by senior high school crowd (during weekdays) (=Instagram Generation), Arjuna rose to a great level of famous-ness when a so called Indonesian singer-fashionista had her premarital photo session there. Of course I too donāt want to be left behind. Therefore the adventure on that particular Sunday. Culinary-wise Iām not impressed at all with the menu. Blame me for being vegetarian, you may do that. But the whole setting of the cafe (And Photo Studio) turned out to be indeed quite generously prepared, catering those folks who constantly need a rustic setting, unfurnished feeling, unfinished wall and exclusive antiques. So next time you, as a true Jakartan, need an āinspirationā for your posting on Instagram or Path, you might want to try out the Arjuna Cafe.
Singapore⦠2015
Every time I visit Singapore after having a brief work period there between 2009-2010, I feel so emotional. I see the city differently in so many ways, I feel humbled for the experiences and sad and happy at the same time discovering new spots, streets or anything new I didnāt have the chance to enjoy during my year there. Iād love to visit the city every year, but maybe that would limit my world map because then I cannot afford going any where else in this planet that I really never set my foot on before (I donāt have too much money for traveling to Singapore AND somewhere else every year - #Ehm). So now, I guess I will visit the city every two years or three, just to make sure I have a chance to see the places I know so well and make new discoveries. I remember Singapore so dearly, it was one of the few places you have in your life where you learn that so many meaningful moments in your life will only happen once.
To remind myself that I don't control others
Leo Babauta of the Zen Habits has one message that resonated so much with me that is we should let others be however they want to be, even when that annoys us. I have been having hard time figuring out how I should do that best but Iām trying and I will keep trying to do get better at doing this. In 2015 I spent my time with a lot of people and I have been going through hard times maintaining relationships. Yet Iād like to write one thing today that Iām really grateful for some people that I got to know (better and closer) this year. I feel now I need, even when itās almost anonymously, to say that I love them so much and that I care about them: Upa, Rifat, Neja, Terate, Seb, Yannis, Lany, Adit, and Clink. Thanks for everything you gave and shared with me (all the nice cocktails included, Seb).
