pokémon: the johto journeys, ep 127 - the little big horn
Are you currently suffering from The Character?
i kind of want to talk about gary's alakazam in this au now, as it tangentially ties into his cooking skills/eating habits ig. it's hard not to take shortcuts when you have magic spoons ...
see, alakazam spoons are very special. anything you eat with them automatically tastes incredible. but they only ever part with (usually) one of their spoons, and only with a trainer they have come to deeply trust.
gary's alakazam is ... a little different. maybe their traumatic face-off against mewtwo when gary was younger gave their big old alakazam brain a good rattle. alakazam's bond with gary is still tremendous, though. so much so that alakazam gifts gary with not just one ... but a constant yet sporadic stream of spoons.
over the years, gary has a amassed an entire drawer of these magic spoons in his lab. just a big ol' magic spoon drawer. a man's gotta have a magic spoon drawer!
in turn, this makes a thief out of alakazam, or at least they could be — gary doesn't actually know how they acquire this continuous supply of spoons. but he can only imagine the aggrieved department store staff before he lets the question go. alakazam has their ways, and alakazam always has spoons. sweet, delicious, magical spoons.
plain old cereal on a 3am work break never tasted so good.
collecting fandoms like pokemon and well. pokemon's one of them
More people should get into poly shipping. Both because polyamory is awesome and because it's really fun to make complicated ass diagrams
hehehehe a little wip of my yumeship 🌙🚀
technically based off of two outros. the first one is obvious but the second one was that cute chibi esq outro with the gorgeous watercolor backgrounds. I kinda wanna animate this but my skills in that corner sucks. but I will try >83 when I have the time. which might not be any time soon.
BUT I HAVE STARTED WRITING MIZUKI'S FANFIC im excited to get to the point where I can post it. I kinda started writing the middle of it when it was supposed to start off as a kid fic but I jumped to after the petrification.
First time posting, let's see how it goes. I wasn't sure if I should but I also like it far too much to not show someone.
These last few episodes have really proved my point of Senku very subtly getting better at understanding and handling other people’s emotions.
op disabled reblogs but i really wanted this post on my blog again
I love Dr stone so much
(My comms are open :D)
So you know how Ash gets picked by legendaries left and right and sometimes his friends also become a legendary's chosen?
I propose:
Which is ironic since Lugia started the whole Chosen One nonsense for Ash.
Also what do yall think of Shadow Lugia? I think they are neat :)
What do you think happened to Gary's cheerleaders?
I don’t really know, to be honest. They probably moved on after he went into research.
In fact, Oak/Ookido made a point in explaining to Satoshi that Gary/Shigeru went travelling alone after the Kanto League disaster. Given how, right after he was defeated, the cheerleaders were still sticking with him, I think it’s safe to assume he asked to be alone rather than being ditched because of his loss :3
+ they actually came back during the Johto League (Misty/Kasumi and Brock/Takeshi noticed the oddity right away) to cheer for him, before he announced his plans of becoming a researcher, so it really seems they still cared for him.
Itttttttt wasn’t a given, though; in novel-verse, if I remember correctly, one of Ookido’s brother is actually Pallet/Masara Town’s mayor and the cheerleaders were said to be the wives and relatives of some of his employees (Shigeru still called them “girlfriends” (in English) since the first episode anyway.), which could… cast doubt on the sincerity of their attachment.
He's all grown up!!!
I can't find the post that tagged me with a Pokemon Masters EX clip of Blue saying bonjour. I put it waaaaaay too far back in my backlog but whoever you are here ya go:
Reunion in Sinnoh!
Since Blue's ENG VA was the same as Macaque from LMK, I like to think that Gary's voice matures into that pitch and range as he grows older (since they aren't 10 forever in my AU). That or Macaque's second VA so Green can have the first.
So not only was Ash met with a very different towering Gary in Sinnoh, where they first reunited since Johto in my AU, Ash was also met with a very different jarring voice from when Gary was 10. He thought Gary was an imposter or smth.
Hence the kicking.
(Gary was offended but held his tongue to try not be an ass.)
Also I take Gary's politeness as both him being humbled as a person but also as a very awkward motherfucker that doesn't know where he stands so like...he is PAINFULLY awkward in Sinnoh before becoming a little mean again like in JN. In my AU, Kalos lmao.
Ash and Gary's first and OG voice actors will always be their 10 year old voices before puberty hit them like a truck for me though. Huge respect to them <3
How did you feel about Gary’s role in journeys
Oh boy this is gonna be a doozie.
Okay so. I'm not gonna lie, Journeys is what made me like Gary Oak cuz I thought he was like a snotty little shit back in the Kanto saga.
And that never quite left me even after Johto and Sinnoh cuz like why are you polite my guy where is your bite? You lying to me or something? The change felt VERY jarring to me and I could not get over it I guess so for the longest time I disliked him.
Like, "oh Gary Oak? The little shit with the convertible? Nah, I'm rooting for Ash."
But I was very curious on what kind of character he was and wanted to know more about him just to like pick apart his brain or something lmao.
So Gary's role in Journeys was, for me, a refreshing look at his character with the same bite but with the development from his past adventures that gave me a lot more context to why he is the way he is and made me appreciate him.
To the point he became my favorite tree.
(Also he a lot like Bakugo frfr love that guy)
I talk about it more in a previous post so you can just view this but the gist of it is basically I liked the way he was the type to keep moving forward no matter what and motivating those around him in frankly the most annoying way possible. He is like a very annoying oak tree thats hogging all of the space and sunlight in the damn forest. He wants to reach higher and higher and grow even further. And I respect that.
But. I am going to admit, his role in Journeys basically meant nothing.
Like okay, it was hype he came back. Love that. I've been sifting through posts of his fans missing him and telling him to come home and have missing posters about him and its hilarious. But like.
What was the point? I know it was meant to motivate Goh and make him have new goals and expand his horizons and the sort and I get that, it allowed Goh to grow. Basically what he did to Ash in their journey.
But thats it?
Like I get it, he's supposed to be a supporting character and he's supposed to play this be unreachable role thing to motivate those around him and I love that for him I really really do. Thats what I see him doing all the time which is why I gave him the title of The Rival.
But Project Mew basically meant nothing man.
The goal that Gary was trying to give to Goh was honestly nothing which became a deal breaker no matter how great the concept was on paper. I was really excited to see Gary and Goh do this research thing together, without Ash so the spotlight can go to the two of them so they can flesh them out more like they should've, but it kinda became meh by the end of it. Because it amounted to literally nothing.
Also, why was Gary in Project Mew in the first place? To understand Pokemon? My guy, why capture legendaries to get an understanding of pokemon when you can show us how you do it general? Why need a legendary? And after you capture a legendary, shouldn't you like I don't know show yourself trying to understand and bond with said Pokemon? Maybe fight with the local legendary you should not have captured to keep the world balance and gain an understanding of each other? You caught a Regidrago and Regieleki with Goh for goodness sake! At least show the research understanding bit of it! That would've been a lot more interesting to explore than just yet another pokemon battle.
Listen. We see battles all the time with Ash. We don't need another one. DO RESEARCH LET ME SEE YOUR RESEARCH PLEASE. FIGHT OVER A GODDAMN RESEARCH PAPER OR SOMETHING OR DO EXPERIMENTS WHERE YOU FIGHT OVER METHODOLOGY IDK JUST SOMETHING ELSE MY GOD—
(And Goh didn't even catch Mew. I get why but like dude why do that in the first place? Then give him another goal that isn't Mew. Or like make a new goal in Project Mew be a stepping stone in catching Mew. Don't make him see Mew and just not catch it and make it look like a win. What the hell do you mean he was given hair to track it down in the future? Bullshit. Make Goh lament or something for failing miserably. And make Gary give back his confidence if they really wanted Gary to play the rival role for Goh like he did with Ash.)
Ngl I think most of my problem with Gary's role in Journeys was Project Mew. If they were gonna introduce Project Mew they should've at least fleshed it out more and not make it yet another pokemon battle but legendaries. They should've focused on the research side more to make it more interesting. That could've made Gary and Goh's dynamic make a lot more sense.
And they could've fleshed out my oak tree a lot more so we know more about him :(
So uh.
Tldr; Journeys made me appreciate him but my god their goal with Project Mew SUCKED ASS.
This is my opinion btw don't take it to heart lol.
Actually I think the other reason I disliked Project Mew is because I also don't like capturing legendaries in general and there aren't any consequences or like nothing is really explored further with the legendary but like that's more of a me thing.
This is why I play romhacks where the characters aren't just trainers getting gym badges man. Team Rocket, Nurse Joy, the sort.
I NEED a Research-centric one sheesh.
