at my job we have to go through a training program that teaches us the library of congress classification system, and when i was first being trained my boss started to boot it up and she gave me a really anxious and guilty look and said “listen, i’m really sorry in advance, there’s nothing i can do about this, just…. just try to get through it” and i was like lol what’s she talking about and then the program loaded and i was greeted with a deliriously funny-looking photoshopped wizard with glowing eyes pointing at some intro message like “AH YES, JUST AS THE PROPHECY FORETOLD… APPRENTICE, YOU COME AT A TIME OF MOST DIRE NEED… YOU MUST LEARN OUR WAYS” and my boss just looked at me helplessly and was like “i’m so sorry. it’s like two hours long.”
thankfully it wasn’t an elaborate fever dream and i have found screenshots
holy shit
…there’s something really weird about checking Arcanum to see the Denver transcripts and finding out that Megan and I were identified - correctly - without either of us being involved.
SUPER FREAKY, NGL
I mean, you did post about what questions you asked... (or at least Kogi did, I made an educated guess that that was LadyKnightRadiant)
I hope you don’t mind.
One thing I told myself the last few months was to keep posting more on Tumblr because I love all my fancy diamonds on here (you). So here goes with some behind the scenes/Between The Sheets stuff. First up, here’s more photos by our wonderful Chris Lockey from the filming of Liam’s episode.
Liam went to all the places with me, and he didn’t have to.
I’ve told everyone the same thing before we film each episode: We’re gonna talk about a lot of stuff, if you don’t want to talk about something, tell me, if we talk about something and you realize after the fact you’d rather not share that…tell me. It’s part of why we don’t do these live. Live streams add a lot of anxiety and impatience and expectations and logistics. We’ve gone to some deeper places on Talks before, but the live element and time restraints prevent us from going to the places we are going to with this show.
I wanted everyone to be as comfortable as possible. So we pre-tape them and I can edit stuff out if needed. It should be noted that we haven’t cut out anything shared from any episodes so far. We edit the transitions and we also have to occasionally pause for a helicopter or dump truck outside. I will also take pauses before or after a heavier subject to give my guest some time to breathe and process, and to check in with them, then we get back to it when they’re ready.
We film one episode per week (on Thursday afternoons. Yes, right before Critical Role). I spend the rest of the week and weekend working with our editor on all the other episodes we’ve filmed already. So while Liam’s episode was set to air Monday, I was in my hotel at 4am in New York this weekend making notes and changes on Liam’s, Sam’s, and Marisha’s episodes. We usually have 3 episodes being worked on at a time, and it’s a massive effort by our whole team.
Once a day of filming arrives, we hang out and talk for a while before. We eat lunch and our wonderful Diana does our hair and makeup, and she’s always playing good music like Nick Cave in the makeup room, which gets me in a great place. When we get to the set, Marisha and Max are there to guide the production process smoothly and also make everyone feel at home, and they do a killer job.
Once it’s time to go, we have our drinks and we turn all the lights off so it’s just us. You forget about the camera person, sound, Max, Marisha, everything after a few minutes, and it’s just two people having a drink at a bar and talking at that point.
You see what happens next.
After we wrap, there’s a lot of hugging, some tears, tons of laughter, and a sense of hope. It’s strange, spilling your inner thoughts and feelings on a variety of experiences—knowing it will live on the internet forever. It’s this uncanny dump and recharge of emotions…then they sit at the table and do CR for 4 hours after. I’ve paid attention to every episode of CR and to the corresponding cast member who filmed their BTS episode that day, and I can see the joy and the light and the passion and love in them sometimes an hour after talking about and reminiscing over what this game has meant to them. If this silly little show could give anything back to this cast, I hope it’s that gentle reminder of how this came to be, the lives it touches, the impact it’s had, the inside jokes and the community it has spawned. I hope it has reminded them of why they do what they do.
To be honest, I am overjoyed at the response to this show. For this season, I told Marisha “I need everyone to see a side of each of you they may not have seen before, the side we all know”. I’ve tried my best to structure the interviews not based on a career trajectory, but on what was happening with them as real people while this career stuff was going on. Folks out there are not going to relate to the IMDB pages of the cast of Critical Role. But the human and everyday life experiences they’ve gone through while also happening to be these amazing talented and successful people are in some way relatable to us all. We’ve lost a parent, we’ve lost a job, we’ve experienced tragedy, triumph, praise and criticism. We’ve been the victims and the perpetrators of tragedy, all while moving through the human experience and hitting milestones in our lives like a promotion or starting a family.
It’s easy these days, with the fabled concept of “celebrity”, to disconnect a person you watch for entertainment from the struggle and the hustle and the heartache of life. I’m hoping this show grounds these people for you and connects the tissue from them to you as fellow travelers on the journey. Because my beloved, that’s all we are, fellow travelers.
This little window into our people and our world is already having such a profound response, I can’t help but feel gratitude.
A friend of mine used to say “Asking questions is a great way to find the part of life you’re missing”, and this show has shown me that tenfold already.
Thank you for your love and support. You are and always will be the wind in our sails.
Worldbuilding June: Day 6-11
How does gender & sexuality work in your world?
On the whole humanity accepts male, female, and nonbinary as valid gender identities. Certain regions might have more but they are not widespread. This world has all the same sexual identities as the real world. Homophobia and other such prejudices are not really a thing. There are individuals who are prejudiced but there are not underlying cultural factors that promote it (beyond some noble families being like “Hey you need to have kids to continue the line”). A lot of humanity’s acceptance of these things relates to the stars who do not have gender and sexuality in the same way that humans do.
There are stars that appear masculine or feminine or nonbinary to humans but they do not divide themselves along those lines, they are more concerned with “color”. A star’s color is basically their gender (though they would probably object to such comparisons based off what they know of humanity). Color is more related to a star’s nature and temperament then anything. One color is defined by aggression and combativeness, whereas another is defined by the desire to nurture and care for others, and yet another by inquisitiveness and the desire to explore.
How does the economy work in your world? What sorts of currencies do they use?
The majority of the world has a standard fantasy-medieval economy though the capital with its magical advancements is approaching a more modern service-based economy.
They use gold, silver, and copper coinage. The gold coins do have a minor enchantment on them so that they always depict the current monarch (or a state of interregnum) which is usually how most people find out about a new monarch (as once they are confirmed the coin’s image changes).
How is your world run? Who’s in power?
Feudal monarchy. Ish. There is a magically codified set of laws, called the Law of the Land, that are designed to make sure that monarchs and nobles can’t just go mad with power. Theoretically the nobility has an obligation to protect and care for the citizens under their charge. Doesn’t always work out that way but if they go too far and the right people find out then steps will be taken to remove them from power. The current king takes this duty very seriously and he is generally considered one of the strongest monarchs in recent history.
What are the religions and cosmology of your world?
There really aren’t any large-scale, organized religions. The stars are generally revered, with the sun being first among them. There have, at times in the past, been cults worshiping the monarchs and the royal family (as descendants of a star) though that has since been outlawed by some of the more sensible monarchs of centuries past which has been codified into the Law of the Land.
What holidays & traditions are observed in your world?
There are various seasonal holidays celebrating the harvest or the solstices. The most important is one the celebrates the defeat of a great evil and the founding of the kingdom. A lot of the actual historical significance has long since passed out of mainstream knowledge resulting in different levels of society celebrating in very different ways. For the vast majority of people it is an excuse to drink and have a huge party. For the nobles its an excuse to show up one another and vie for dominance in high society. For the royals its a much more sombre and respectful affair, honoring their ancestors.
What’s language like in your world?
For largely administrative reasons efforts have been taken so that the entire kingdom speaks a single common language. This language is nominaly descended from the the language spoken in the region where the hero who founded the kingdom was from, but in practice it is a hodge-podge of loan words and grammatical rules from all of the major languages that were once spoken in the kingdom. Knowledge of these dead languages does still exist but is really only relevant to historical research. These languages are more expressed in regional naming practices. The capital region is very Latinate where as the town where most of the action takes place is more Celtic.
Technically arcane magic is based around the language of the stars, but humans do not use it for conversation.
Worlbuilding June: Day 2-5
What’s the Geography of your world?
I haven’t actually given much thought to the physical shape of the continents. I’m not even certain that it will be a sphere or a discworld, but I am leaning more towards a traditional sphere.
Most of the action takes place in a fairly secluded town in a semi-mountainous region of the Northern Reach. The Northern Reach consists of this mountain range, the taiga, and the tundra in the north of the kingdom.
Who lives in your world?
The vast majority of people in this setting (and the only ones currently on this world at the start of the story) are standard vanilla humans. Humanity has been united under a single monarch for millennia at this point so there really aren’t any deep ethnic or cultural divides. Various ethnicities do exist but they aren’t really a source of major conflict between people. Such conflicts do exist however but generally have more to do with things like land disputes between nobles.
The other sapient people that are relevant to this story are the stars. In this setting the stars are humanoids with immense powers to shape reality. They feature in a lot of myths and legends but have not shown up much in recent history (or if they have it is not commonly known). They mostly travel the universe creating and shaping worlds as they see fit. Many are very fae-like in that their motives are foreign to human understanding. As a star reaches old age they begin to slumber and their inherent power begins to radiate from them forming a structure very similar to the giant balls of plasma that make up stars in our universe.
The Royal family actually claim descent from the star.
What’s its history?
The world was created eons ago by the ancient star that now serves as its sun (having long since begun to slumber). Up until this world’s Iron Age analogue humanity was split into a number of warring states. Then a hero emerged who sought to unify the world and bring lasting peace. With the aid of a star he was successful in founding the kingdom. This effort was part of a grander conflict between stars but not much is known about that. There have been internal wars since the founding but they have always been weathered. The kingdom is currently in a state of stability and prosperity.
What sorts of civilizations and architecture fill your world?
In the capital there are skyscrapers of stone and metal built in a vaguely Romanesque style. It’s a very high magic city largely due to the presence of the Royal Academy of the Arcane Arts with magical running water, magical sewers, and magical trains.
The town where Auremus (”Remy”) has settled is much simpler with most buildings being stone with thatched roofs. There is a stone castle that is the seat of the local Baroness. Most of the magical advances that the capital enjoys have not reached this town, but Remy (serving as the town’s arcanist) has implemented some projects.
Worlbuilding June: Day 1
Tell us about your world
So the world/story I’ve been working on lately is a fairly standard European-esque fantasy world. The main character, Auremus, is a runaway prince who was fourth-in-line for the throne but left because he never felt like he could live up to the responsibilities of being a royal. The main story picks up about eight years after he ran away and deals with him learning how to stick up for himself and others until the climax where he is forced to become king.
The story does play with the idea of the divine right of kings because the royal family descends from from a being of deific power. The original idea came from watching a let’s play of Final Fantasy XV.

EEF’S BIRTHDAY GIVE-AWAY
My birthday is coming up and I’ve reached several follwer milestones on all my social media, so I figured I’d do one big give-away to celebrate it all! I’ll be randomly selecting one winner from tumblr, one from instagram and one from twitter who will all receive a free commission of whatever they want. This can be either a two character sketch or a single character fullcolor drawing (both options are waist-up).
Every reblog of this post equals one entry! Spam your followers however much you like, I’m not the blog police. ;)
Followers only! I can’t keep you from unfollowing after the give-away but you know.
It may take me a little while to get around to finishing the prizes since I’ll be on holiday and paid work always comes first, but I’ll keep in contact.
If the winners don’t respond within 48 hours I’ll pick someone else.
If you want to increase your odds, be sure to also participate on instagram and twitter. I’ll pick the winners through a random number generator on my birthday on April 25! Good luck, and thank you for following me!

O GREAT WEIRY, KNOWER OF MANY THINGS: does Roshar have volcanoes? because Shallan mentions that she thinks Kharbranth is carved out of granite, but that's an igneous intrusion, so without plate tectonics it shouldn't exist. Theoryland has no answers for me that I can find. (and it's entirely possible that this is just an editing oversight and I'm being overzealous, but... I'm still curious.)
Roshar does /not/ have volcanoes (there is a WoB on that, which will be posted when the new archive gets released next week). I wouldn’t necessarily say this is an editing oversight though, because the continent itself is not natural. Adonalsium /made/ it, and they could have done that and included an igneous intrusion.
Collectible coins based on Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series of novels. Boxings and Clips struck in solid brass and copper.
Hey so the Kickstarter for the Mistborn coins is ending this Saturday and is closing in on 1000% funded. When they reach that every backer will receive free “blackened” coins (to represent the ash of Era 1).
If they can reach $125,000 then they will add a new add-on, a recreation of the coin Kelsier and Vin battled each other with during Mistborn: The Final Empire, the one that gets flattened and bent.
They’ve also added keychains with the coins as a pledge level and as an addon.

A new Brandon related kickstarter launched earlier today and has already been funded (in 135 minutes no less)! It features Mistborn coins, with designs by Isaac Stewart and Ben McSweeney, which look pretty dang cool.
Update: In their most recent update, Shire Post Mint mentioned that the first 1000 backers will get something special. They’re currently at 950. If you were on the fence before, now would be the time to jump in.

Got 32, which is a little young but not too far off. Too many of those questions didn’t have good answers for me. Like, I don’t care about any of the 6 classics choices, or the 6 series choices. /shrug
