It truly baffles me to see all these straight hockey romance books and shows starting to pop up - people saw the success of heated rivalry and thought... it's the hockey isn't it.

Okay justice for Ilya Rozanov, a man who notably managed his entire families finances and his dementia-having fathers caretaking since he was literally a teenager, while also essentially raising himself to be an elite, generational athlete by himself.

Shaney is heavy sleeper dead to the world. Shane Hollander sleeping time is deactivation time™️ once he’s out he’s out you cannot ! Wake that guy he is out cold cold. It can take him a bit to fall asleep but once he is it’s on. Ilya on the other hand, light sleeper, small sounds, sores slamming in corridors in hotels, cracks of thunders loud voices- he’ll wake. Deep deep sleeper Shane Hollander, however is a fussy little thing. He is squirmy and wriggly, noisy. Shane is all big deep heavy sighs, rolling over with a grunt and heavy arms flopping onto the mattress.

He’s soft sounds and mumbling, groaning and whines- all the while heavily asleep. Ilya often wakes up to Shane’s bigger fussing, when he’s suddenly rolling and turning in bed, smushing himself against Ilya’s chest, mouth ajar. When he’s letting out a low huff and a groan and burrowing into Ilya’s neck- a squeak in the low of his throat and his legs are straining out in a stretch, kicking against Ilya’s. It never bothers Ilya, really all, he loves the reminder of anything his Shane is in bed with him, to feel him against him. Ilya soothes Shane as he fusses, knowing that Shane is in a deep sleep, but Ilya wants him to know he’s there, just incase. He’ll kiss Shane’s brow, his cheek, the corner of his eye, his bottom lip, rub the back of his neck or his hip. He whispers soft things into the curve of his ear. “Sleep sweetheart” and “it’s okay Shane” until he drifts back to sleep himself.

Shane begging Ilya to stop because he's already come twice and "please, Ilya, I can't" but "that's not the attitude of a four time Stanley Cup champion, you can do anything you set your mind to" and Shane goes quiet (apart from the moans and whimpers) because, wow, he's so right. Shane can take anything Ilya doles out.

Married Hollanov decided to do an ad campaign together and they chose Peloton to be the first one. They sit down with the Peloton team and they’re throwing out ideas for the commercial when Ilya cuts in with an idea of his own. As Ilya talks, Shane realizes Ilya is describing the night in the gym all those years ago. The Peloton people love it. They’ll need to work in some other aspects but they go with Ilya’s general idea. The commercial comes out and it opens up on a shot of Shane pedaling on the bike. Ilya joins him a moment later, not before running his hand along Shane’s lower back. They pedal hard on their respective bikes. That turns into running on a treadmill which turns into shadow boxing which turns into other exercises to show off all of the Peloton features before they end up on the floor facing each other, sharing a water bottle and smiling at each other as the Peloton label fills the screen. Shane and Ilya watch the commercial and then decide to read the comments:

‘I didn’t know Peloton was a porn company now’

‘So if I get a Peloton I’ll get a hot husband? He’ll just appear beside me?’

‘You ever look at two people and just know they’re freaks?’

‘Did you see how Ilya mouthed ‘more’ to Shane when he was drinking??’

‘The hand on Shane’s back, helping him stretch during the Yoga part, oh I know Ilya tore Shane up after that shoot.’

Or, a Hollanov Parenting AU

Part 1

Forward: I've had this AU floating in my head for a while now and my plan was to write it as a fic but I've been struggling to write for a while now and I kinda want to get this out there. Maybe one day It'll be a fic but I'd rather share my ideas with the world than have them rot in my brain forever.

This is a world I just want to play in and share my headcanons of it - and hopefully some people find interesting enough to engage with it too 😇

As a disclaimer - I have NO medical expertise, for one, so everything discussed in this post and future posts may not be completely realistic/accurate. Sorry if medical experts cringe. But I did try! Also - I am very, very pro kids and parenthood, and some of what I talk about might be controversial.

When Shane is in his late thirties he suffers an injury to his lower left leg. A complex fracture to his tibia and a ruptured ACL, all of which is made more complex by some arthritis that had been developing in that knee just from long term intense athleticism.

It happens on the ice.

Shane didn't realize it, but he'd torn his ACL (not fully ruptured) while working out a few days prior and had conflated the pain to a flair up in his already-bad knee. He'd gotten a cortisone shot later that same day (a previously scheduled maintenance shot) which helped the injury fly under the radar.

Its the first game in the first round of the playoffs, and Shane is trying to beat an opposing player to the other side of the rink on an icing call, when his ACL snaps, his knee gives out, sending his leg sliding out from underneath him, which causes him to fall on his back, flying bad-leg-first into the boards at 25 miles an hour.

Ilya is with him immediately, and so are the medics. Shane feels like he watches all of it in slow motion underwater.

He ends up needing two surgeries and an emergency fasciotomy when his broken leg develops compartment syndrome.

At first, Shane pushes for a recovery plan that will get him back on the ice as soon as possible, but as recovery goes on it becomes clear that 1) his recovery will be over a year long, at best, not including getting his body reconditioned for pro hockey 2) rigorous activity will increase the likelihood of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, which, combined with the arthritis he already has, would make his ability to play at the same level he was extremely unlikely.

All that to say he could spend the next several years pushing his body past the brink for a chance to get back to MLH ice - only to maybe have a few more years of good hockey.

They'd always said they'd start their family after one or both of them were retired - so why postpone their future even further?

(But that's not happening until Shane's leg heals)

The nail in the coffin is when the Centaurs win the series on that same cup run. Without Shane.

It's hard for Shane, of course. The year of intensive recovery he spends off the ice has him questioning everything about himself.

The Centaurs hold a ceremony before a game where they retire the number 24, and speak about Shane's legendary career - and how even though he only spent a few seasons with the Cens, he's Ottawa born and raised.

Shane does not cry. Ilya does.

The MLH contacts Shane about how they eventually plan on putting him in the MLH Hall of Fame - there's a mandatory waiting period of five years or so, but it's just a formality, really.

It all feels like a funeral. Like he'd died that day on the ice.

Shane sort of feels like he did.

It doesn't help that Ilya is still playing.

Ilya's immediate thought after Shane's injury was to retire alongside him.

Hockey had been a lot of things over the course of Ilya's life - a pastime at first, then a distraction. A mental and physical escape route, then a career. A means to an end, and then a genuine joy.

Shane had showed him how to truly love hockey, and that love had been furthered fostered by the Centaurs, his pride and joy, the fruits on his labor. They have two (now three) cups at thais point. Ilya made that team what it was, and he loves them.

And while it feels wrong to continue to play hockey in a world where Shane can't... Ilya realizes he still wants to.

He feels soooooo guilty about it.

He doesn't bring it up to Shane for that entire summer. He keeps waiting for Shane to bring it up like "when are you breaking off your contract?"

In Ilya's mind it's as obvious to Shane that he should retire as it is to him.

What ends up being true is the opposite - Shane expected Ilya to keep playing. Of course he does - hockey is the best thing in the world, why wouldn't Ilya keep playing?

That doesn't make it easier for Shane to watch from the stands, or occasionally the couch, as Ilya gets to continue playing.

He's lonely.

He's bored.

Shane's natural inclination is to find a job still within the hockey world.

He's a horrible commentator because what do you mean not everyone knows why the ref made that call? Does he have to explain it every time? Which only leads to Shane info dumping for longer they can permit for televised games - and being cut off leads to a very frustrated Shane.

Famously, Shane isn't the best at coaching either. Almost 10 years of Irina Foundation summer camps have showed him that. Plus Shane wasn't looking to take Wiebe's job, which only left the possibility of coaching other teams, which meant being on a different schedule and in a different place than Ilya.

So unless he was looking to sit at a desk and do paperwork for the whole of his retirement (NOT Shane's type of workload) there really was nothing left for him in the hockey world.

On the flip-side however, even bored and searching for purpose as he was, Shane found being out of the spotlight such a relief.

Shane finally finds his purpose, as cliche as it sounds, when their son is born.

I think not enough people understand that Shane was willing to give up hockey for Ilya from the beginning. He is dead set convinced that being outed, especially with his League assigned enemy, will ruin any chance he has to play hockey professionally. And yet he still is the one that prompts their relationship becoming serious at every turn. He asks Ilya if he feels it too at the Tampa All Stars. He asks Ilya to come to the cottage. He asks Ilya to be honest about his feelings. He makes a ten year plan to get to a point to be together openly. He proposes. Shane has been choosing Ilya over hockey since the minute he said 1410 and he has reinforced that decision every time. And hockey is *everything* to Shane. It is his reason to live. He genuinely has never wanted anything more in his life- except for Ilya. Ilya asking “would you choose me over hockey” is the equivalent of asking a partner “would you die for me”. It’s intense and heavy and alarming. The fact that he hesitated is because he knows how scary the choice is to say aloud and he still does. Shane saying “fuck you” to Crowell is literally the most punk thing he could have done.

If there is one thing I would want Jacob to add in TLG adaptation, it’s a conversation between Shane and Ilya after their big fight. And I mean a proper conversation about everything these two have been getting wrong all this time. Like, the book kept on building up to that conversation, and after their big fight, both Shane and Ilya kept telling each-other that they would talk. But that never happens and instead it’s overshadowed by the Plane Scene. If Jacob actually decides to treat Shane’s issues in TLG seriously then he will need to put in that conversation. Preferably before the proposal.

What other people see as Shane being "selfish" I see as Shane being autistic. And that's why I get so angry about it.

Shane was never told by Ilya that he was having a hard time, and hardly ever got to spend time with him, and when he was spending time with him Ilya was happy because he was with Shane, which was part of his problem was that he felt he was only happy when he was with Shane. That's not Ilya's fault either, necessarily, because it is hard to open up like that, and he's allowed to be sad Shane "didn't notice" because he doesn't know Shane is autistic (even if he did know too, its ok to be upset that Shane doesn't have that skill set, feelings are complicated).

EVEN BEFORE THE PLANE CRASH after Ilya told Shane he was struggling, Shane was IMMEDIATELY trying to come up with a new plan. He feels guilty. Because before he didn't know, but now he does. And now that he knows, he can make changes for Ilya.

Shane was more confortable with The Plan than Ilya because guess who struggles with change? AUTISTIC PEOPLE.

The driving conflict of Heated Rivalry was that Ilya thrived with implied things, reading between the lines and Shane couldn't understand that, and didn't know the signals he was giving off were being interpreted differently by Ilya. They have different forms of communication.

Which was pretty much the same conflict in TLG, but now in a different context, but instead of the story being about Learning How To Communicate, Ilya gets to be the perfect baby boy who can do no wrong, and Shane is the selfish antagonist.

THAT'S why I hate Shane being called "selfish" not because he "has flaws", but because is disability is being villainized. The moral of the story isnmt about both of them learning to communicate, but "Shane is punished for being selfish"

It’s not surprising to me that Shane is expected to “fix” himself after their big Boxing Day fight. He’s had to conform to society’s standards as well as hockey culture his entire life. And since Ilya already made so many sacrifices, it’s Shane’s turn to make concessions. Not saying it’s right, it’s just what happens. But what I don’t find fair is this expectation that he should’ve known Ilya was hurting. Being in a long distance relationship isn’t easy, especially when both parties are super busy. Making time can come in little spurts, like we see in tlg, and when you have that time, talking about serious issues within your relationship is the last thing you wanna do. Shane throwing the question of would you pick me over hockey back at Ilya didn’t come from the same place as it did for Ilya. Ilya was asking literally because a part of him believed Shane loved hockey more than him and was terrified Shane really would choose hockey and decide to leave him—the man has abandonment issues. Whereas Shane was asking his counterpart and rival, the man he thought loved hockey just as much as he did, whether he’d be able to give up such an integral part of his identity. Because to Shane, not being able to play hockey would be like cutting off his own head. He wasn’t thinking about everything Ilya had given up because that had always been the plan: sign with Ottawa, start their charity, play hockey, retire, come out. It was their way of having both of the things they love: each other and hockey. Because Shane wasn’t willing to give up either. That plan that was tearing Ilya apart is what was holding Shane together. But as soon as Shane realized that, he changed the plan. The original plan was always inequitable and was always going to result in Ilya getting hurt—because Ilya was depressed long before he ever met Shane. The whole reason for the plan in the first place was for them to have the future they wanted together and keep the future they already had set for themselves. Which was fine in theory, but in practice, for two people with mental health issues they either are just unaware of or don’t want to acknowledge, it was never going to work.
