You know what I think about a lot. When Jonathan talked about turning out to be like his dad, and how his children will hate him.
Because damn. I think it truly highlights the character's inherent selfishness, which wasn't really thought out. Instead of worrying about screwing up his kids, he's worried that they won't love him.
Also, like Jon, you wanna talk about turning out like your abusive dad a little. Like, why is the divorce your big hang-up? Are you equating Nancy with your mother? This convo with Argyle leaves me with so many questions, but also reveals a lot about the type of man he is.
jonathan complaining about his kids hating him says so much about why he hates his dad, and it's like...not the same reason the fandom does. because you’re right, it really shows that jonathan views everything bad about his dad through the lens of lonnie and joyce's relationship
and i think that says a lot about what he thinks of his mom
i see a lot of resentment from jonathan toward joyce, and while some of it's about not feeling as protected as will, or about responsibilities and pressure in general, i think even those tie back to some internalization of the gaslighting that lonnie threw at joyce. no matter what one hcs as "the norm" irt joyce giving adult tasks to jonathan pre-series (or whether jonathan taking on those tasks unasked was necessary), i think it matters that the instigating tragedy of the series happens after he took on an adult task that she specifically told him not to: he wasn't supposed to be working the night will went missing. like, i'm not really trying to blame jonathan for will getting kidnapped (and tbh babysitting a younger sibling might be a more normal chore but I’ll admit it’s still a kind of pressure put on him), but i do wish the show presented that question as more about jonathan and joyce than about jonathan and will. bc he took that shift bc he thinks he needs to take care of his whole family (not just will), because he didn't trust his mom to have the right priorities or understanding of the world, and that's a huge part of his resentment toward his dad - because he thinks that should have been lonnie's job. jonathan might think lonnie sucked at the job, but he just straight up does not think his mom is capable. He didn’t choose work over will, he chose being the family provider over being an older brother who trusts/respects his mom. he thought she was crazy throughout s1, the same as lonnie did (and hopper, but even he came around before jonathan did), and i don't think that changed at any point in the series
i think he blames joyce for chasing lonnie off as much as he blames lonnie for driving joyce “crazy”, but either way it has absolutely influenced how he views nancy. because yeah, he's been projecting his mommy issues onto her since he said she was just like every other suburban girl who played at rebellion but ended up marrying some has-been jock straight out of high school. that’s not really how nancy described karen, so i thinks this is just how he sees his own mom. hell, at the time, nancy was the only other person who believed in the crazy monster that joyce tried to tell jonathan about
at some point jonathan imagined his and nancy's relationship as the good version of his parents - a joyce who's sane, and a lonnie who helped prove it, and both of them had a chance to get out of that town. that stopped as soon as he stopped thinking nancy was so sane in s3, and the rest of the series was just his crashout

Thinking of how funny it is that Jonathan Byers wanted so desperately to go a bankrupted out of state community college in a city that had serial killers running loose at the time.
The Duffers really looked at a list of the most pretentious film and art schools in the 2020s and went “yes that one” as the main goal for their self insert character. And they forgot to actually track the reputation timeline for the school they wanted Jonathan to end up in.
There were legit only a handful of graduating classes out of Tisch by the time Jonathan Byers age 12 wanted to go there.
