A relaxing morning with these budding babies indeed
Hey there. How come you don't like the "deaf woman hears husband" video? Just a little confused. Thanks!
copy and pasting from this post here:
hearing people don’t know anything about Deaf culture or deafness in general and since these videos are so short, the immediate reaction is “awwwwwww!” and then “wow science! it can FIX deaf people! deafness is gone!” when no that’s incorrect and offensive because we don’t need to be fixed and we don’t want your sympathy.
also cochlear implants and hearing aids are expensive as hell (some insurances consider them COSMETIC AND WILL NOT PAY FOR THEM CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT) and since there is a huge wide range of deafness it’s not a catch-all type thing where it’ll work for all deaf people. But since hearing people don’t know this much about deafness, they go and make comments like “why aren’t ALL deaf people getting these!?!! this is amazing we are in the FUTURE!”
they are meant to be very TOUCH-HEART (i cannot for the fucking life of my think of the english word for this. heartfelt? touching? ok yeah) so they always use little babies and women whose reactions tend to be more emotional like crying and whatever. it only further make people think that hearing is the greatest thing that has ever happened to these poor deaf people :(
they all say “deaf person hears for the FIRST time” which isn’t always true. a very very teeny tiny portion of deaf people can hear absolutely nothing. mostcan hear some things, although it has to be very loud things and we still can’t hear them clearly or well, but it just further making hearing people assume that all deaf people hear total silence all the time so just going back to hearing people knowing nothing about deafness
Deaf people have said over and over and over and OVER about how annoying these videos are but hearing people keep reporting on them anyone? like just take our word for it and stop doing that?
there’s so much more to deafness than deaf people “hearing for the first time” and it’s never touched on in. i mean, you’ve got Switched at Birth and Marlee Matlin, the go-to Deaf actress for literally every role that requires a Deaf person but that’s it. that’s our only representation in mainstream media. other than these viral videos. and it’s annoying as hell
there’s nothing wrong with CIs, lots of d/Deaf/HOH people have them but these videos are just atrocious

For many activists, the fight for the rights of people with disabilities centers on changing the attitudes of society and removing barriers, not “fixing” the person with a disability.
