Something that annoys me is the constant whining about "more queer spaces, more queer communities" but then they're immediately like "yeah! And we need ones that don't cost money or require a purchase!"

Girl that's exactly why they close down after a year. You NEED money to keep these places open. There's no magic Gay Money Pot with endless cash to keep these places open. It requires YOU to put your money where your values are!!

Like there was a queer coffee shop in my city. Owned and operated by a bunch of LGBT people. Not a cishet on the schedule. Tons of young people raved about it.

And it made it about 2 years before shutting down completely. Because all those young people who begged for a place exactly like this would just show up, not buy a single thing, and leave. You cannot build a community without putting your money into it. This isn't about capitalism, this is just reality. You can't open a restaurant where no one buys your food. You can't have a gay bar that only serves 5% of the population and actively excludes everyone else. This is what I mean when I say people confuse "community" and "friend group." You're not obligated to spend money when hanging out with your friend group. But if you want a lasting community centered space, you need to open up that wallet.

Need help finding a good quality leopard print are rug under $400, I’m so bad at finding good quality home decor stuff 😭

Some caveats:

I want distinct rosettes. No vague concept of a leopard print or whatever.

I’d like it to be more golden/orange toned. Think Javan or Indian leopards, not African leopards.

If it is a jaguar (dots in the middle of the rosettes) or cheetah (no rosettes) print, I will end myself

Needs to be living room sized. I’m not sure the exact measurements, but I think 8x8 or 8x10

Halimede being a satire but also saying true and helpful things is confusing. People are always saying “Satire requires a clarity of purpose and target lest it be mistaken for and contribute to that which it intends to criticize”, and I think Halimede fails to do that. The satire, at this point, is the idea of a cis woman who Really Does Care That Much. One who will never Quite "get it" or communicate entirely in a way that doesn't turn heads and raise eyebrows, but who does genuinely carry a ton of love for trans women in her heart, even if she expresses it awkwardly and often offensively. It's satire because it's a type of person you pretty much never actually encounter. In a real person, this behaviour would be threatening. The allyship of most cis women is often performative at best. Their faux pas can't be laughed off as lovable well-meaning stumbles, because that's not what they are, they're veiled insults used to other us. Signs that they don't Actually see you as one of their own. But being a character, Halimede is disarmed, and this behaviour is made harmless. Halimede also does not see trans women as being the same as her, but her love is real, and she often reaches the right conclusions about how their minds function and what they need. She's just also an idiot who says things you should never say to a trans girl's face. It's that lack of social sensitivity that allows her to state the quiet truths most leave unsaid.

It's a good gift guide, delivered with all the social subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face. A callout post about everything a trans woman denies herself, delivered with love.
