the space seed episode of tos where they find khan and the ss botany bay is so funny because right off the bat you have kirk being like "yeah let's get that historian whats-her-name out there, maybe she can be useful for once" and it's like WOAH what's up with the liberal arts hate?? why is kirk being such a bitch to this lady for no reason. then you meet her and she's fucking obsessed with historical strongmen to the point of covering her walls in her own fanart. she lives on a spaceship in a utopian technofuture and she sleeps surrounded by busts of kings on purpose. her vibes are fashy and kirk is right to be a bitch, actually.
then they get to the botany bay and she's immediately driven to distraction by how horny she is for ricardo montalban under a thick layer of extra-dark foundation. sorry i'm gonna compare montalban with and without the makeup because it is SO distracting
also she refers to sikhs in the past tense implying that at some point in the last two hundred years there was a genocide that they're just glossing over. since she also calls them a warrior race it's also possible that she's just racist and somewhere on board the enterprise there are sikh crew members who dislike her as much as kirk does.
anyway you can assume that this is her first actual away mission and she fumbled immediately because she was so hot for khan but it's much funnier if this isn't the first time this has happened. every time they have to interact with a historical earth artifact she gets so horned up thinking about being a tradwife that she's rendered speechless. spock stays polite but kirk can't stand her. by the time kirk found out she was the type of person to paint her own portraits of napoleon and roman emperors to hang in her quarters it was too late to send her back and request literally anyone else. he's supposed to court martial her but offers to let her stay on fashy eugenics planet just so he won't have to keep her on his ship anymore. it's unclear if he lets her take her paintings or jettisons them into space.
this is the funniest analysis of “Space Seed” I've ever seen
... Same. :)
clover WHY would you put this in the tags
People who have never seen star trek:
The accuracy hurts 😭
i think i'm slowly getting the hang of these pencils
Well the science officers are trained in being a bitch, of that we can all be sure...
mccoy doesn't have a chair on the bridge cuz he's the kinda guy who stands behind the couch to watch a whole 45 minute episode of something while insisting he doesn't need to sit down bc he's just checking out one scene. does this make sense
Getting into Star Trek in the ripe year of 2026 is so weird, cause like... everyone knows Star Trek. Older generations tend to have a lot of knowledge about like the TNG era, maybe even watched it, but for anyone my age or younger it's something that just kind of vaguely exists in the background of culture. It's your favorite show's favorite thing to reference. It's your grandma's yaoi. It's something your grandpa collected magnets for. But I hardly meet anyone who actually actively engages in Star Trek (or more specifically The Original Series), and somehow it lives in between being very well known and also being very niche.
I think a lot of this comes from this feeling like it's a party that you missed out on, like a dying art form you are only getting into now that it's been replaced by something newer and more efficient. Star Trek was all the rage, and now, in a time where entertainment companies are going through mega-mergers and conservatism is back on the rise and trending again, it is struggling to find its footing with a new generation, and that is especially true now that Starfleet Academy is being pre-maturely put down. It is simultaneously so much content to approach and information to learn that it's daunting to newcomers and not enough content tapping into the current cultural moment/zeitgeist.
Am I making sense? I hope someone understands what I am getting at. Anyways, so far, I love my dive into Star Trek, and it both overwhelms me and excites me that I have basically only scratched the surface. I keep catching myself watching season three of TOS slower and slower to postpone my farewell to this original series. I have a strong feeling that no other Star Trek show will be like it, and while that may be good in many ways, I am going to miss going on silly and philosophical adventures with my favorite silly characters.
at some point I'm gonna draw this but for now take my badly edited meme

Gene Roddenberry really went out there and said "My wife is a QUEEN and I'm going to put her in Star Trek to make sure you all know it" and I respect that because he was right. Happy Birthday to the late and great Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.

Oh right, the biology. The biology of vulcans. The biology specifically relating to vulcans. Vulcan biology.
That biology?
T’pau watching it all go down in the glittering sands of her forefathers.
I am losing my shit right now
I finally finished this Enterprise D LCARS cross stitch! Was supposed to take about a year, but long covid had other plans for my brain and ability to count. So it's been over four years instead. It has a bazillion-jillion stitches in it.
I still need to wash it, block it, and frame it.
14 count aida, pattern no longer available, info here.
