"The thing we more commonly see is like character X can’t come out because of external factor Y in their lives that prohibits them from doing so. They have parents who are religious and will disown them, they have a job that will fire them — all these walls that life can put up to keep us from being our true selves. But as a gay viewer of those shows, I always think to myself that while those stories are true, it’s missing the bigger point, which is that it’s really friggin’ hard to come out to yourself. "

This is why Leighton's storyline resonates so deeply. For a lot of us the hardest part of coming out is accepting ourselves (legit vividly remember that the first time I really acknowledged aka FINALLY admitted to myself with no going back and no excuses that I was gay I fell asleep at night crying and whispering 'why me?'). Knowing your whole life is going to change the moment you finally say to yourself "I'm X" is extremely scary and TSLOCG portrayed it beautifully.

TL/DR: coming out to yourself can be very, very hard. TSLOCG really captured that.
