This is mostly the result of a stream of consciousness after I realized that Matt had never been in a romantic relationship where he was out as the DofHK/Daredevil (Elektra, he hadn't started vigilante-ing yet; Karen, he did not want her to know, was scared for her to know–and possibly reject/abandon him; Heather, he was living where the whole point was a complete excision of Dd, as if it was never a thing). By the time of Daredevil s1, it's obvious he'd been avoiding dating and relationships, period (Foggy's assumptions were dramatic irony). Anyway, maybe that's what Claire was–him toying with the idea of entering a relationship where they already know. Nothing to avoid or hide or tip-toe around. Which would be the closest to what he had with Elektra, who clocked, accepted, and connected to that part of him (but only that part of him) immediately (but then tried to take it too far). Claire, tho, was not accepting of or connecting with it, especially in the context of a potential romantic partner (maybe Luke was an exception for her, bc he can't really get hurt, bc as an inner city er nurse she dealt with way more than enough of that at work). Karen, tho, right off the bat admired and even crushed on Dd…but completely apart from Matt (like, completely apart, bc the rare times Dd came up in conversation between her and Matt he deflected the subject). As for his disavowing Dd when trying to get Karen back, that was probably partly bc when he’d attempted to go full Dd with Elektra it went disastrously (like, twice). And we know he couldn't calibrate this thing, he'd go from one extreme to the other. It also could be seen as him trying to continue, as best as possible, his “never the twain shall meet” philosophy about his civilian personal life vs Dd, especially where Karen was concerned. So, Matt being a boyfriend/significant other while the other person is in the know about his enhanced senses and vigilantism is a threshold he hadn't yet crossed, and now that he has it’s a completely new experience for him–being in that kind of relationship where every side of him is known and loved. With Karen it's what I mentioned earlier, (re-)starting a relationship where she already knows everything–as well as fully accepts and supports–even admires–his vigilantism, like she already has for years.
