When to describe setting
Anonymous asked you:
When describing setting, should i start with a character, go to setting, then setting in relation to character (i.e. Kayla lived in an old house. It had flower beds in the back and it had other stuff DETAIL DETAIL DETAIL. she was sitting on the front porch one dayā¦) or trickle in details throughout the passage? (I.e. Kayla sat on the front porch one day reading her newspapers. She decided to water the flowers growing in the backyard, then she walked to the front and ā¦)
The trick Iāve been using for description is ādominant impressionā. Simply put, describe the setting as your character interacts with it, and āinteractā can mean setting a book down on a nightstand or looking out across the field or feeling the weather as she walks.
āDominant impressionā also means alluding to a characterās investment in their surroundings. She eases down a thrice-read book on a mahogany nightstand that was once her great grandmotherās, and sheās very careful with anything she braves setting atop the scraped lacquer. This not only adds character to the scene, but also adds new dimension to your character.
So, in short, Iād personally advise as you said: trickling details. Readers are more likely to remember description if thereās significance to it (even if itās just the fact that the top stair of the porch has creaked since she was a toddler in a diaper, or whatever the case may be).
Hereās a ton of other links that expand a whole lot on the above and might help you with how and when to describe setting:

why you should keep writing your story
because itās a puzzle no one else will ever arrange the same way as you.
because there are ideas that simply wonāt come to you until you write down the wrong words.
because all the bad scenes are the bones of the wonderful scenes.
because someone will love it: someone will read it once, and twice, and thrice; someone will ramble to you about the complexity of it; someone will doodle your characters out of love; someone will find it in exactly what they were looking for with or without knowing it.
because they have things to say, your characters. theyāve told you all those secrets and they have more to tell you, if you will listen.
because you love it even when you donāt; even when it drives you mad or when it accidentally turns into apathy; even when you think youāre doing it all wrong; you love it, and it loves you back.
because you can get a treasure even from things that go wrong; because if a story crumbles down you can build a shinier one on the same spot; because you wonāt know where it will take you until it takes you there.
self care is writing a fic that youāre literally the sole target audience for
Oh my Powers Rangers one
I love planing out my ideas in great detail but when it comes to actually writing the story itās like pulling teeth. It goes from being fun and interesting to being nothing more than a dull chore. Iāve tried planning less to see if having some things unknown might help, but that didnāt work. I could spend forever writing and rewriting my ideas and making changes to them. But when I try to write an actual story itās like I physically canāt. What should I do?
Details Planned But Unable to Write
If you have the details of your story planned out but still aren't able to write it, it's probable that one of the following things is happening. See if any of these strike a chord with you...
1 - Details and Plot Are Not the Same - Sometimes writers say they have all the details in their story planned out, but what they actually mean is they've fleshed out character and setting details, maybe even backstory and some general scene ideas, but they couldn't tell you what the story's conflict is, what the inciting incident is, what goal the protagonist is pursuing and why, what's at stake, or what the major plot points of the story are. No matter how detailed your story is in terms of characters, setting, backstory, and even general ideas about scenes, if you don't have a conflict to tie them all together, you don't really have a story. You just have details. A plot can't be moved forward if it doesn't exist, and if you don't have a conflict, goals and motivation, stakes, an antagonistic force and obstacles, etc., you don't have a plot. Solution: take some time learning about Goals and Conflict, Plot Driven vs Character Driven Stories, Basic Story Structure, and How to Move a Story Forward.
2 - You Lost Interest in the Story - If you have your story properly plotted in addition to having the details fleshed out, and you're still unable to write, it could be that you've simply lost interest in the story. This can happen when we spend a lot of time on a story, especially if we spend a lot of time fleshing things out. Solution: Guide: How to Rekindle Your Motivation to Write, Getting Unstuck: Motivation Beyond Mood Boards & Playlists, Getting Excited About Your Story Again
3 - Something in the Story Isn't Working - Imagine someone riding a horse and they come to a rickety old bridge, but the horse balks and refuses to cross. The horse may just be stubborn, but it's quite possible it's picking up sensory information its rider can't... creaks and groans the rider can't hear, a worrisome tilt or sway the rider can't perceive... If you sit down to write your well planned out story and can't, the same thing could be happening with your gut instinct. Like the horse that doesn't want to cross the bridge because it senses danger, something inside you is saying "this story doesn't work" and isn't excited to get involved. Solution: Read through your outline or plan and see if you can spot the problem. Maybe the character's goal doesn't make sense with the events of the story. Maybe the antagonistic force isn't doing enough to oppose the protagonist. Maybe the character arc is out-of-sync with the events of the story. If nothing else, talk it through with a trusted writer friend to see if they have any thoughts. Sometimes just hearing the questions they have about the story can be enough to highlight what isn't working.
4 - Life Stuff Is Getting in the Way - Even if your story is well fleshed out and thoroughly plotted, and everything works and you're excited about writing, there can be other things going on in your life that stand in your way. If you're putting too much pressure on yourself to write or reach certain writing goals, it makes writing feel stressful and our brains are wired to avoid stressful things. It could be that you're not feeling well physically or mentally. You could be distracted by other things you want to write or do. You could just be too busy with other things to really get into it. Or you could just be not in the mood to write. Solution: Try to pinpoint what's getting in the way and see if there's a work around. For example, if you think writing has become stressful and that's why you're avoiding it, figure out what you can do to make it fun again. Or, if you think you're just not in the mood to write, figure out some things you could do that would put you in the mood to write.
5 - Fear Is Getting in the Way - Details are easy, writing is hard. No matter how much planning and plotting you've done, actually putting those details into coherent words in a way that is compelling and well-paced--that's not so easy. And, the tough reality is that until you've had a lot of writing experience, your writing probably isn't as good as you want it to be. You want it to be good, and you know what would qualify as good, but you're just not able to produce that quality yet. And the only way to get your writing quality to that level is to let yourself write things that aren't as good as you want them to be. You have to write a lot of "just okay" stuff before you can write "really great" stuff. AND THAT'S SCARY!!! And--that's not even the only thing that can cause fear for writers. Maybe you have written a lot and your writing is where you want it to be, but maybe your fear is with the next step... sharing it with others. Maybe you're afraid others won't enjoy it as much as you want them to. Solution: figure out what's causing the fear, whether it's quality-related or next step related, then try to push through it. Remind yourself that writing not great stuff is part of the process. Remind yourself that sharing with others is part of the process (usually, unless you're writing for yourself.) Have a spin through the bottom half of my Motivation master list for other fears and solutions.
I hope that helps!

do they trust others easily or do they get trusted by others easily?
what is something your oc will never talk to anyone about? (their answer can be deep, like some emo trauma or like smthng like back when they shit their pants or smthng yk)
do they give off golden retriever energy, or a black cat energy? (or both?)
what will THEIR opinion be on YOUR current life? will they be ur friend? will they trust you?
will your oc survive in a fantasy setting, a war setting, a dystopian setting, a futuristic setting, a medieval setting? will ur oc survive after getting stranded on an island, or a forest?
does your oc like their parents, do they like how their life is, do they feel like they're born in the right gen?
if they are ever to get one wish definitely granted, what would they wish for?
how did they react to their first kiss? (if they have had it by now lmao)
what's an ideal day for your oc?
lastly, who does your oc go to when they've fucked up?
Exactly I always want to know how to take care of my characters and how to get them to open up organically

"are you crazy? they're not my type, you know that."

"they're annoying as hell, no i don't have feelings for them."
"i honestly don't even know who you could possibly be referring to."
"what if i told you i said those types of things about everyone? then what?" "i would really hope you didn't. oh god."
"i do not want to see their face, hear their voice or their name for that matter. stop talking about them."
"what gave you that idea?"
"why does everybody keep saying that?"
"it's just been a while since i've had a close friendship like this, that's all."
"no.....no."
"i wasn't blushing! it was hot out." "it is literally snowing outside as we speak are you joking."
"i don't even like them like that i don't know what you mean."
"i'd do that for anyone!"
"flirting? me? i wouldn't say i was."

"they're just a friend. that's all."
"we've been friends since we were little, we're practically siblings! no!"
"love?! you think i'm in love?"
"i know what having a crush feels like and this is nothing close..." "have you considered that it's because this is more than just a crush?" "stop talking."
Some of My Favorite Ways to Describe a Character Whoās Sick
pressing their forehead into something cool or comfortable (this could be an array of things. the table, the floor, someones leather jacket, their water bottle, the countertop)
warm to the touch, or heat radiating from them (could be noticed if someoneās gauging their temperature with their hands, hugging them, or just generally touching them)
leaning into peopleās touch, or just spontaneously leaning on them (like pressing into their hand when someoneās checking their temp, or just, like, literally walking up and laying their head on them from fatigue. bonus points if the character is usually feral and the other is scared to engageā¢ļø)
falling asleep all over the place (at the dinner table, on their homework, in the car, in the bathroom ā just being so exhausted from doing literally nothing)
being overly emotional (crying over things that donāt usually bother them, like their siblings arguing, or their homework, or literally just nothing)
stumbling/careening/staggering into things (the wall, furniture, other people. there is no coordination in feverish brains. running into chairs, hitting the door, falling over the couch, anything and everything)
slurring their words (could be from fatigue or pain. connecting words that shouldnāt be connected, murdering all of their conversations with the excessive use of āmmā and ānnā in place of words) (this is my favorite thing ever)
being overly touchy (basically like a sick kid ā just hold them, please. do that thing where you brush their hair back out of their face, or rub circles on their back, or snuggle them. they wonāt care. bonus points if this is also the feral character and they refuse to believe it afterwards)
being extremely resistant to touch (flinching away when they usually donāt so someone canāt feel the fever, not letting themselves be touched because theyāre so tired they just know theyāll be putty in their hands if they do)
growing aggressive or being extremely rude (itās a defense mechanism ā they feel vulnerable and are afraid of being manipulated or deceived while theyāre ill)
whimpering/whining/groaning (this was in my ācharacters in painā post but itās so good that iām putting it here too. this shite is gold, especially if itās just an involuntary reaction to their symptoms)
having nightmares caused by a fever and/or delirium (crying and murmuring in their sleep, or being awake but completely out of it and convinced theyāre somewhere else)
making themselves as small as possible (curling up into a ball everywhere they lay, hunching over slightly when standing, wrapping their arms around themselves)

āno time will be betterā - prompts for that first kiss <3
prompt list by @novelbear
"woah."
the first initial kiss being a simple peck, then they immediately go back in for a stronger, more passionate one.
"are you sure about this?"
the hands. on the waist. oh my god.
^ then they feel themselves being pulled closer ??
taller gently grasping the shorter's chin
"that was...." "yeah."
a certain song playing while they have their moment and it becomes their song.
"sorry, that was my first kiss." "i could tell." "...." "i'm kidding!"
an accidental first kiss
"are we about to kiss right now?" "you are not serious."
awkward giggles right after
"well i guess that answers my question."
a hand (or both) placed gently on their cheeks!!!
"i'm sorry, i had to."
the uncontrollable smile they break into either after or during the kiss itself
"don't you dare tell anyone about this." "wasn't planning on it."
that panic beforehand while trying to figure out if they're really leaning in for a kiss or not.
someone's hair ending up getting caught in the other's glasses/jewelry
maybe one is awkward enough to the point where they're like "what the hell do i do with my hands?!"
feeling each other instantly relax as they both quickly get comfortable
"can we do that again? my eyes were closed." "oh my god."
their hearts stopping when they hear someone's camera click (a friend catching them in the act ?)
"so does this mean you feel the same or..?"
And I told them Iād get around to finishing that book I started in collegeā¦
I will I swear
