" He became detached before flipping his helmet up and shooting one of his own men since they'd seen Jason's face another milita member came in "watch her anyone harms her their a mother fucking dead man" he leaves the room ....

it's painful, almost agonizing to see him this way, ruthless, detached, hellbent on revenge. a part of her blames herself for it; maybe she hadn't tried hard enough to find him. if she'd been smarter, stronger, more determined, maybe she would have found him in time. maybe none of this would have happened. maybe all of this is all of her fault.

she wants to call out for him, tell him to stay. even if he's a shell of the jason she used to know, it's still him. years of absence, of missing him makes watching him leave feel scary, like he'll disappear again, forever this time. but the gunshot startles her and words are failing her spectacularly and all she can do is watch him walk away.

I've always wanted to be a hero but... the idea seems stupid now. ❜

she thinks for a moment, pondering the idea of it all. what it means to be a hero, what it means to live that kind of life. she supposes she would be the poster child for a life like that can't be worth it. it would be so easy to say so, to agree that it isn't worth it, but everything else gives her pause.

"you know..." she begins and trails off, the words dying on her lips. it's a difficult thing, voicing complex feelings about something so inherently selfless. "my mind changes on whether it was worth it, but... i don't regret it. i did good work, important work. i helped a lot of people doing what i did."

the words hit hard, cut deep, striking something delicate. tears sprung to her eyes unbidden, hot and stinging. she wondered if she deserved this ire, if she really hadn't done enough to find him. she'd tried so hard back then because she wanted him home, for herself, for dick, for bruce. his loss had been like falling through a frozen lake, the grief so difficult to get out of even now. she didn't think she'd ever be able to convince him of that fact, not when the jason before her was nothing but a shell, hollowed out, but she would try anyway.

"i tried-" the whisper is small and broken, her voice like crackling glass. "i tried... so hard to find you, jason. i promise i did. we all did."

"I mean.....what about poor Jason who screamed and cried out for the person who he saw as a older sister to come and save him or for Grayson to come and save him .....or....Bruce.." he smirked under the helmet rage simmering "that's right Barbie it's our little secret now here's another ...batman likes to play the hero Barbara ....if your captured ... he'll choose the mission every fucking...dammn time!" He flipped his helmets up revealing his broken young worn face...... His face had been branded with a j those sweet eyes were now replaced with jadedness betrayal....hurtness and.....brokenness ....

as if the fact that he knew her name or the relationship she'd shared with the ill-fated second robin weren't enough, it was like the world grinded to a halt. the hiss of his mask slow and drawn out, her eyes meeting his. for a moment, she wanted to believe it was just a nightmare or a trick of her terror-addled mind or the result of some stray mist of scarecrow's fear toxin. it couldn't be him; he'd been gone so long, too long. they'd all just assumed he'd... but the longer she watched him, that observant green gaze of hers taking him in, picking up on all the same imperfections of his skin that jason had, she knew. how could she not?

"jason," she whispered, his name so now foreign on her lips. he'd become someone she never spoke about, the memories too painful; she couldn't remember the last time she'd uttered his name. her mind raced, her stomach tensed. "what... we thought you were... how?"

her heart ached something fierce, all at once terrified of and mystified by this man. as oracle, she'd done what she could to bury her past; nobody had ever and would never know that she'd been batgirl, a protege whose bright future had been taken away in an instant, a flash of light and gunpowder. but he seemed to know those long-buried secrets about her, sensitive information she'd taken delicate care of to keep in dark shadows, and it scared her.

"i don't know what you're talking about," she said, fighting hard to keep her voice even. there was nothing to gain here from being scared, from letting that show.

barbara does her own study of the woman before her, those long waves of blonde and those dark brown eyes framed by equally dark lashes and the tattoos that run the lengths of her arms, pale skin shot through with dark ink. she wonders what she might feel so curious about, whether it will lean into the personal questions everyone tends to ask a woman in a wheelchair.
