HOW TO WRITE CHARACTERS WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES ( without offending every single person with a mental illness in the process!! )
mental illnesses effect a lot of people, me included. i happen to also have a mental illness that is very misunderstood within the media and roleplaying communityâ DID. itâs really heartbreaking to see people portray nearly every character with my mental illness in a very, very negative lightâ and iâm sure itâs hard for others to see, too. SO, I MADE A CHECKLIST. do you think youâre well enough informed to write a character with a mental illness? Â letâs find out.
â  i have the mental illness i gave my character.
thereâs the big one. you pass thisâ youâre fine. pass go. collect $200. roleplay away to your gay little heartâs content. for those of you who DONâT have the illness that you give your character, youâve got some work to do. ANOTHER CHECKLIST.
â  i have researched the mental illness thoroughly and carefully.  â  my research did not consist of reading a YA novel that sorta talked about it.  â  i REALLY REALLY REALLY researched it. researched it hard af.  â  i realize that this is a real mental illness that effects REAL people.  â  people with mental illness probably follow me, so iâm going to be respectful.  â i wonât give this to my muse to make them seem âmore edgy.â
if you missed a check on that list, DONâT GIVE YOUR CHARACTER THE MENTAL ILLNESS. if it is integral to your characterâ work on it. understand how it effects the people who have it in a REAL way - donât go to the media ( which UNCEASINGLY misrepresents mental illness, ) and remember that people with the mental illness you want to give your muse ACTUALLY EXIST, they are not quirks or little add-ons to make us more interesting. they are draining and hard to cope with, and misrepresentation is rampant.
thatâs it. now go, run with your little respectful writing and well-rounded muses, and be secure in the fact that youâre probably not going to step on anybodyâs toes unless you stop being understanding and respectful of the fact that these are REAL THINGS that effect MANY REAL PEOPLE, so you should portray them in a REAL WAY. thanks.

I canât drown my demons
The demon was incredibly surprised when the human leaned into his side, his eyes widening to the size of dinner plates at the contact. He hesitated for a moment before awkwardly wrapping his arm around the humanâs shoulders, not sure how else to comfort him.
When he nodded though, Perci couldnât help the smirk that tugged at the corner of his mouth. Even through all that, humans were still greedy and would do anything to get what they wanted and be free from their pain, including selling their own soul to the devilâs son himself. But the human didnât need to know that little fact.
Perci unwrapped himself from the human before tilting the blondâs head up toward him and kissing him deeply. It wasnât conventional, no, but kissing to seal a contract made things more interesting and it always caught the humans off guard which he loved.
Andy knew he was making the biggest mistake of his life, yet he didnât seem to care. He didnât even feel unsure of his actions at this point. The kiss was a little surprising, but Andy was too weak to pull away, so he let it happen, suddenly feeling calm wash over him liked heâd never felt it before.
He really did feel better and the blond felt grateful just for that, even though he probably just sold his soul to get rid of withdrawal symptoms. Andy thanked the demon, getting off of him and grabbing his backpack, not really sure what to do next. Maybe heâd crash at a friendâs place if he found his way to one of their homes. Most addresses were forgotten, since he usually only went for parties.
I canât drown my demons
Perci watched as the human suffered from their choices. Usually heâd love this but the fact that he was going to be out of a soul left a sour taste in his mouth. He needed to fix this so he could make a deal.
The demon sat down next to the boy and rubbed his back soothingly in an attempt to help him calm down enough to the point where he could speak coherently. âI can help you, you know? All you have to do is say the word and I can take all your pain away.â he stated softly, reaching out and brushing some of the sweat damp hair away from the humanâs face.
Andy couldnât help himself as he curled up against the demon, having needed some sort of contact to comfort him and he didnât mind being held, as it eased some of the pain. He didnât want to believe that this demon could help him, but Andy was getting desperate, homeless and on deathâs bed.
The blond calmed down enough to stop crying for a moment before nodding. Of course, he was unsure what heâd be getting from this, but anything to make the pain in his body go away was completely fine by him at the moment.
I canât drown my demons
Perci stayed in the area, waiting for the human to decide what he wanted to do. He knew that heâd choose the deal, they always do when they were that far gone. But it still took longer than he expected. Humans were finicky like that though so he couldnât really hold it against them.
The brunet was walking down the street around the middle of the day, killing time like he always did when he stopped in front of the opening to a dark alley way. He just knew there was a broken soul in the shadows, he could sense it. So he decided to investigate, taking careful steps into the dark and frowning at what he saw.
âI didnât think it was possible for you to look worse than you did last night.â he mused, going over to the human and looking down at his shaking form. âYouâre gonna die from your withdrawal symptoms at this rate.â
Even if Andy was thinking about the demon, he didnât actually expect him to step out of the shadows like that. He couldnât help but scoff at the demonâs comment, only for it to sound like he was coughing. If he was still at home, heâd be able to go to the ER, but he wasnât at home; he didnât have one anymore.
The thought of being homeless was what really killed Andy. if he survived going through withdrawal, heâd be forced to live on the streets. Even if he was starting to make a living for himself, that all didnât matter anymore. His parents had influence in the city and he was positive theyâd already made sure he wouldnât be able to get back up on his feet. That was what he âdeservedâ.
Andyâs tremorâs pulled him from his thoughts though, as he leaned his head back trying to find some form of relief. Movement only made it worse though and he felt like his whole body was spinning and weightless. He couldnât even stop himself from crying as he ran his hands over his face. He just wanted it all to be over already.
I canât drown my demons
Perci hummed softly, raising an eyebrow at how intuitive this human was. âWell, thatâs how most demons play. They try to make your life a living hell while trying to steal your soul.â he explained, picking at his nails absent mindedly. âI, on the other hand, actually do honest work with my time here. Once the contract is sealed, youâd get the body you want most.â
The demon knew of people like this human. Born one way but desire to be another. It wasnât uncommon on his travels. âThink about it. Once you make a decision, you can summon me and weâll get started.â he stated, pulling the glasses out of his back pocket and handing them to the human before using his powers to vanish.
Andyâs life was already a living hell, so he didnât know how it could possibly get any worse, but he wouldnât take any chances. This demon was most likely be lying anyway. He scoffed, watching as the demon disappeared and he only realized then that he didnât have his glasses on. The blond put them on and soon realized that his ride home bailed, so he grabbed his backpack and walked, which took longer than he thought and even then, police had to escort him home, because they thought he was underage, which was more than unpleasant.
The arguing wasnât what made Andy cry, but more so the fact that his parents couldnât admit that theyâd fucked him up so horribly mentally and emotionally that heâd turned to drugs. All of the blame was put on him and he had until midnight to pack up and leave. They were doing him a favor by giving him time. So Andy packed what he needed, managing to stuff everything into one bag. He was still on the pills from the party, which caused him to be a bit slower than usual, but he managed to be out of the house by midday.
Not a few hours later and Andy was siting in an alleyway, holding himself and shaking violently from withdrawal. His head spun and he couldnât see straight and all he could think of was the demon from the night before. Somehow, Andy thought in that moment whatever the demon gave him would be better than what he was experiencing in that moment.
I canât drown my demons
Perci raised his hands up in surrender when the human pushed him back, letting him keep thinking that he had free will to leave their little conversation. âWhy? Because Iâm telling the truth?â he asked, following after the blond and grimacing when he vomited. Disgusting. Humans were disgusting all the time.Â
âIâm a demon. You already knew that but Iâd consider myself pretty powerful when it comes to others.â he hummed, crossing his arms over his chest. Of course he was more powerful. Any demon that said otherwise was dead by the time the words came out of their mouth. âI can give you anything you wantâŠ.for a small price.â
Andy grimaced at the tasted, only partially listening to the demon as he tried to wash down the taste of bile with some beer, which wasnât much of an improvement. âYeah, my soul.â He stated when the demon mentioned a âsmall priceâ. He already understood how it worked from shows and movies; real life didnât seem to be any different. The blond grabbed water then to wash out the tasted of puke and beer---the best thing heâd done for his body all night.
Itâs not going to be exactly what I wanât though, is it.â Andy stated. Heâd learned enough from watching horror movies to know that demons only existed to fuck people over. Of course, he was tired of dealing with the body he was born into, but the bigger consequence would be coming home and having his parents disown him because he âdestroyedâ his âpreciousâ female body. No way was he going to take this deal while still living under the same roof as his parents.
I canât drown my demons
Perci watched as the human tried fleetingly to get up, an amused look on his face, at least until they rolled over and he noticed they werenât exactly how the presented themselves. âSure you are. Which is why you can barely hold yourself up.â he sighed, tucking the glasses in his back pocket and recasting his more human looking disguise as he helped the blond to his feet.Â
âTell me, what is it that you want more than anything before you OD on drugs? Money? Women? Power?â he started, looking the human up and down once before smirking knowingly. âA penis?â
Andy was grateful to be helped to his feet, but he bristled at the last thing the guy mentioned. He knew too well that life didnât work that way and he could never get what he wanted, even if he sold his soul. âShut up.â He muttered, shoving himself away from the guy and walking towards the counter, grabbing a half empty bottle of beer and taking a swig from it.
He leaned heavily against the counter until he had his forehead pressed against the cool granite. This was how most nights ended, but he didnât want to expel the contents in his stomach just yet. That didnât stop his body, though and he lifted his head over the sink, puking out everything he could to try and make himself feel better. In a sense.
I canât drown my demons
Perci couldnât keep the grin off his face as he watched the humans scatter like insects after lifting a rock. It was marvelous. Thatâs when he noticed a boy collapse as he ran and the demon couldnât help himself, walking over and kneeling in front of the blond.
He could tell the human was high off his ass on whatever drugs were at the party which made this even better. He was more susceptible to his charms like this. âOh, seems like youâve had a bit too much fun for youâre system to take.â he mused, picking up the glasses that and fallen to the floor and turning them over in his hand some.
There shouldâve been some fear or adrenaline running through Andyâs system, but all he could say was that he felt numb to the point where he couldnât even remember why he fell or why he was running in the first place. He could only groan in response to the demon, rolling over to face him. He couldnât see much without his glasses, so he just stared blankly, realizing that his glasses probably fell off his face.
âIâm fine...â He muttered, rolling over back onto his stomach as he tried to scrambled back up to his feet like a puppy on waxed flooring. Andy couldnât manage finding any balance though, sliding right back to where he started, only to feel his stomach turn in reaction to everything he took that night.
I canât drown my demons
Wandering around the earth for 1,000 years was great an all, sure he got to see societies rise and fall, mountains get replaced with seas, but it was still boring. The only fun Perci really ever got to have was when he was around humans. Whether he was making them scream in pain or pleasure, it was always a good time. Heâd been feeling especially sadistic that day though and really needed someone to mess with, which was when he sensed that someone was using a Ouji board nearby and it peeked his interest. The brunet easily made his way over to the house that a party was apparently going on in, already able to tell that it was over flowing with drugs and alcohol, and snuck inside unnoticed. It was fairly easy to blend in with the crowd, especially since no one was paying attention to him in his human disguise. Once Perci located where the kids were messing around with the Ouji board, the demon decided to have a little fun for a few minutes, waving his hand subtly and moving the glass piece around the board so he could answer the questions.
After a few moments though, that started to get boring. The kids were running out of interesting questions and everyone was starting to loose interest. So Perci decided to fuck it, letting his disguise dissipate and showing off his real form before snapping his fingers to turn off the music. âYou know, you really shouldnât mess with that stuff. Itâll invite something you donât want into your home.â he mused, smirking evilly as he used his powers to tear apart the room and send the people in the house running while he laughed.
 @origaratorâ
It was never easy to be sober for Andy. His parents gave him hell constantly and pressure from other people and even himself became too much for him to handle. He turned to the sweet song of partying and doing drugs to cope and he couldnât keep himself from staying away, even after each hellish morning coming off of whatever he took the night before. The thing was, nobody cared who or what he was, just if they were having a good time.
At some point in the party, somebody broke out a Ouija board and Andy felt compelled to speak with the afterlife after being off his face on Acid, weed and some pills a friend gave him. Everything seemed to go fine, they asked dumb questions and the ghost answered, that was, until a demon came up from nowhere and started destroying the place.
Everyone pretty much scattered, but the world seemed to slow down for Andy. He got up and barely even made it out of the living room, his eyes still on the back door in the kitchen as he fell flat on his face. He knew drugs would be the death of him, but not like this. The blond tried to sit up, his glasses sliding off his face and clattering to the floor. At least he could say he tried.
